I went in last week for scan on my kidneys, a suspicious lump that needed checking. Climb up on the bed and said to the lady “oh this brings back memories!!” She smiled at me, and started the scan. First stop, bladder. Asked if I’d used the toilet and I said yes, asked any chance of pregnancy, I said NOOOOOOO…….she said “oh……I do see something here.”

well, I nearly fell off the bed looking round at the screen to see a HEARTBEAT!!!! I did a little swear under my breath (my children are 10 and 13…….im 37!!! I thought I was done and was so careful!!) and she said I need to take a pregnancy test…….which I thought was a bit irrelevant since there’s a baby on the screen with a beating heart!!

I took one anyway, positive instantly and the darkest I’ve ever seen a test…….next day I made an emergency appointment at EPU, there it was, 6 weeks…….and I had absolutely NO idea. Zero. And I’d still have no idea as I’m lacking any symptoms I had with my first two!!

so that’s my story! I’m still very much in shock and disbelief.

i thought I had a horrible cyst/lump…. Instead I left with a baby 🤣

I did! I tried the injection and it was a big NO from me, sent my hormones into a spiral. And I applied to have my tubes tied but was turned down.

I have all boys. With such a big age gap we ended up having a 21st, 18th, 16th & 1st birthday all in the same year. Youngest came as a total surprise as my implant had always worked perfectly. He is an absolute joy to have.

I’m not going to lie, this is a ridiculous phobia that I have that one day I’m going to have pains in my stomach and pop a baby out and not realise I’ve been pregnant for 9 months.

I mean you’re only 37… not sure why you’re acting like you’re 50. Youre only 7 years older than average age of first pregnancy.

Congratulations OP! I once went to get my wisdom teeth out under anaesthetic but went home with all teeth intact and a baby on the way!

I went for a scan for PCOS in my second year of uni... They confirmed I had lots of scarring and usually it might indicate issues with fertility ... but they could see a 12 wk foetus on screen! I had no idea and had been guzzling tequila like there was no tomorrow. What a shock we got. He's now 19 and about to begin his own 2nd year of uni...😬

I had been struggling with secondary infertility for 12 years,
As i was being put under for a procedure they asked ....any chance you could be pregnant?
Hahahaah fuck no i said. Laughed, dozed off.

A few days later, had a weird dream so I did a test. Turns out I was pregnant.

Are you over the initial shock yet?

I have the same fear after a couple of friends said they had a period after they became pregnant, they didn't miss one until they were two months. One of the joys of perimenopause is that my periods are gone off schedule and have decided to come a week early then over a week later, I've bought a multi pack of cheap pregnancy tests that will last ages so I don't have to panic every month

Jealous? I doubt it, falling pregnant whilst on contraception is most people's nightmare! She's just making a valid point that if you'd fallen pregnant twice already on hormonal contraception, it was fairly predictable it would happen again. But as you're happy with the outcome, all's well. Enjoy your pregnancy.

Congrats! This reminds me when I found out about DS2, I had to go to A&E as I'd broken my toe and had to have an x-ray, the nurse asked me if any chance I could be pregnant (because of x-ray), my period was a few days late but we'd just not been trying at all (and I thought we were being careful), but because of this nurse suggested a test, and of course it came back positive. I was very shocked (and 40 so a real oldie compared to you ;).

When I got home, DH very innocently asked me how the toe was and I replied ' that's the least of our worries' (although it was a very welcome surprise).

Congratulations! Not as dramatic but at an early scan (8 weeks Ish) due to previous complications and loss, I was shown a tiny beating embryo and a shadow or yolk sack went home happy that all looked good and straight forward. That yolk sack and her identical twin sister (mono so the super risky pregnancy type) will be teenagers later this year! Was an interesting 12w scan when we found out.

I never understand the mistrust of women who get pregnant on contraception - 99% over a whole population of sexually active women, over many years is obviously going to result in some babies! Even vasectomies sometimes fail. Even if everyone used condoms and the pill and the coil, there would still be some babies (very few, but some). It's life and the nature of risk!

Some people aren't particularly planning a baby but would be happy and capable if one came along and so taking 99% effective contraception is perfectly normal and acceptable way to view that risk.

Congratulations OP as you are clearly happy in these circumstances, and if you change your mind and are no longer happy about it in the next few weeks, there are options.

So what would have been your route? As women get pregnant using all types of protection. The only way to make sure you have no more children is complete abstinence, and that would be very extreme!

it’s not a valid point at all, women get pregnant on contraceptives all the time, including the snip. I love that out of all I said THIS BIT is what’s being taken and run with. Contraception FAILS, what’s so difficult to understand about that? So I’d appreciate it if anyone with nothing nice to say scrolls on instead of poking at me for USING A CONTRACEPTIVE THATS 99% effective!
