Depends on who you ask!

expatinscotland · 04/06/2008 18:25

Apparently it's now none at all.

I'm 20 weeks now, and I must say in this warm weather I am craving a glass of white wine, sipped outdoors, with some fried prawns.

tinkis30tom · 04/06/2008 18:25

nil i have seen midwife and saw the news it is recommended that you dont drink any alcohol during pregnancy.

biglips · 04/06/2008 18:25

"drink in moderate"

i was getting carried away on Shandy for a while but now gone off it!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 04/06/2008 18:26

Basically, don't.

Although if you speak to any MW they will tell you that the occasional glass of something is not going to cause a problem.

To make myself feel better about having a glass of wine or a beer, I make it into a spritzer or shandy. I think I need to calm down!!

SparklyGothKat · 04/06/2008 18:31

so can she have one drink??

with DD1, I craved a pina colada like no one's business.

Oooo. It was such a hot summer and I couldn't find anyone in Edinburgh who could make one..

I finally broke down and bought all the ingredients and made one myself in a blender.

It was the best pina colada I ever tasted.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 04/06/2008 18:34

It really is up to her.

No doubt our mum's would say, I smoked 20 a day and drunk a bottle a wine a night when I was pregnant with you, and you've turned out ok!

Mw are saying nothing at all based on new govt standards BUT that's based on v.little research and IMO because the govt don't trust pg women to have any sense. I spoke to an OB very experienced who'd read all the research - there is some evidence to say that during the first trimester and anything over 2 units (so that's a glass of wine) could cause distress to the foetus. No research whatsoever so suggest that 2 units or under a couple of times a week causes any harm. I'm yet to find anything to dispute what he said so I'm having a glass tonight, I enjoy one once or twice a week.

sweetkitty · 04/06/2008 19:39

I've had one glass of champagne and two glasses of wine this pregnancy (not all at the same time) but thats been about it.

I am SOOOOOO craving a large glass of really chilled white wine though.

nannyjo · 04/06/2008 19:43

I've had the 'occasional drink' and my consultant said it was absolutly fine. a small glass of wine a week or evrery other week isn't going to do any harm I don't think but if you feel guilty doing it then are you really going to enjoy it anyway. DS1 i felt guilty and never enoye it so never drank. DS2 i had a couple throught the whole pregnancy, DS3 i had one drink evry other week probably otherwise I would go insane Never in the first 14 weeks or so though.

spicemonster · 04/06/2008 19:43

I heard someone from the government being interviewed on the radio about it and they confessed that there is no new evidence for them to change the advice from '1-2 small glasses a week' to none whatsoever except that they don't think women are clever enough to be able to tell the difference between a small glass of wine and a bucket sized one.

I believe MNers are cleverer than that though

Latest is "don't". Next month it will probably be "fill yer boots"....

I work with doctors and one gynae prof told me that one or two units a weeks is fine. It will relax you and baby he said.

Becks do a v good alcohol free lager. When I was pg I also had a small measure of wine topped right up with soda and ice. Tasted nice - downside I was peeing all the time

ALSO - docs I know said that the safe units for women was a guesstimate that they came up with "because woen are a bit smaller than men"

Iklboo · 04/06/2008 19:48

women smaller

lackaDAISYcal · 04/06/2008 19:48

Royal College of OBs and Gynae (or is it of MWS?) still say one or two units once or twice a week is fine as far as I know.

LynetteScavo · 04/06/2008 19:52

I think actually having one D&T would have done DD less harm than me stopping around screaming at DH "You don't know how much I need a Gin and Tonic!"

But current advice,I beleive, is none.

star6 · 04/06/2008 19:57

The MW I spoke with said don't drink at all. I don't ever crave alcohol, so I'm not missing it at all and fine without it, but if I did crave it, I'd think a bit wouldn't hurt.

MsSparkle · 04/06/2008 20:06

I think absolutly not! There is no need to drink anything alcoholic during pregnancy. It's only 9 months then she can drink what she likes.

Sorry i didn't mean to come across as being hasty. It's something i feel really strongly about and i just cannot grasp why people can't go a few months without any alcohol.

May i ask what aspartemene and sacharin are and what they are found in?

AggiePanther · 04/06/2008 20:18

The current advice is don't drink at all . It used to be 1-2 units a couple of times a week. There has been no new evidence or research to prompt this change - it is purely a back covering exercise by the govt ..Because they don't know what level is safe they say have none.
