I generally call the hospital as labour starts and just let them know, I’ll update them as things progress so that they have time to consider staffing, etc.
I would also have called my Doula the minute things start happening so that she can be on call, for example, losing my mucus plug, waters breaking, mild contractions.
The best things about homebirth,
❤️ Most likely to receive continuity of care (Proven to give you and baby better outcomes) as the home birth teams are quite small and so you will know who will be with you at the birth
❤️ you get two midwives with you birth at home one for you and one for the baby, so a much better level of care rather than just being on ward and passed around
❤️ Gas and air available, but most importantly a birth pool, that you can get into at any time and isn’t dependent on, it being available or deemed appropriate
❤️ Not coming into contact with hospital level superbugs, for me or my newborn
❤️ The birth being family centred and my children not seeing me as “sick” or having something wrong with me
❤️ The champagne and pizza in bed afterwards - not the crap NHS toast everyone bangs on about
❤️ And obviously the fact that it’s generally safer than a hospital birth
The majority of times the distress caused to the baby is the doing of the hospital, and so there’s no way I would be stepping foot back in there - the latest Maternity Services report shows just how bad the state of affairs is now with most maternity trusts being deemed inadequate.
