Measuring 5 weeks but definitely 6 weeks pregnant

WillowRose1411 · 08/06/2025 15:55

I had an early scan yesterday, I am definitely 6 weeks pregnant at the very least but measuring 4weeks 5 days :(
a gestational sac, and yolk sac were seen and a very tiny baby measuring 1.4mm with no HB.
I had my first bfp over 3 weeks ago so there is no way I am any less than 6 weeks. I have a history of miscarriage (8 to be exact) so it’s just a waiting game until the next scan or I start bleeding. The wait is the absolute worst part and I am struggling.
Any advice? Am I definitely out or are there similar stories that somehow worked out. I know I’m clutching here!
thank you ❤️

Measurements are so tiny and babies varies so much at that stage, I'd really try to stay positive for now, it's really easy for the suggested gestation to be off

Honeybee1996 · 08/06/2025 16:02

Hey!

I feel you honey! Going by the first day of my last period I should be 8 weeks 2 days today. I went for an early scan today and they said I am measuring at 5 weeks 3 days): everything was there but no heartbeat. They told me to re book another scan in 2 weeks so they can re look. Im really really trying to be positive but it’s really hard):

hope everything works out okay for you xxx

I’m so sorry you are going through the same :( it’s just heart wrenching and so tough.
thank you both for your replies. I’m trying to stay positive but from past experience these things never work out well.
with my successful pregnancies I was able to see baby and heartbeat at this stage and the one time I didn’t I ended up having a mmc st 8 weeks. I’m hoping to get to the epu for a 2nd opinion this week I just hate the wait
sending you all the luck and strength honeybee ❤️

Have you been referred to recurrent miscarriage clinic? If not I would go private and get some progesterone suppositories! Worth every penny. I wish you all the luck with this pregnancy

I was under their care before the birth of my son in 2023. He was a total miracle, I didn’t have any medical ‘help’ ttc with him. But have started trying again thinking it might work and gone back to constant losses. I’ve had progesterone pessaries before- will they potentially help at this stage in the pregnancy? I’m not that clued up on them
thanks so much x

I can only talk about my experience but after 3 successful pregnancies in my late 20s and
30s I went on to fall pregnant at 45. Unsurprisingly at that age I had two miscarriages.

We tried one last time, fell pregnant and at a private scanning clinic for a very early scan were
advised to take a private prescription of progesterone. That baby is now 7 years old!

Wow that is great news. Was your scan similar to mine measuring behind?
do you know where I can get a prescription of progesterone as I highly doubt the gp will prescribe something like this and it’s difficult to get an appointment!

Yes they will! Confirmed that pregnancy is in the right place so worth a shot. I started taking at 6 weeks and currently 29 weeks.
Ofc there is always a chance baby will stop growing if there is an abnormality but progesterone can help so much and definitely worth a try

I don’t think it was necessarily but you may need progesterone to support your pregnancies in the early stages. It was the midwives running the private scanning company that prescribed the progesterone.

Are you able to get an appt at one of those in the next few days, would be worth a call and discussion with them?

We are in the West Mids and went to Cherish in Solihull. I don’t know if every scanning company have personnel who can prescribe?

Good luck with everything x

Thank you. I’m in the southwest near Bristol and haven’t been able to find anywhere similar near me. I’m hoping for a phone call from the epu today and hoping they might be able to help with this

Hi @WillowRose1411
I am in a similar position to you right now. Early scan, measuring behind, FP but no heartbeat yet...
The wait between scans is really tough!

I don’t think it will be from previous experience but we will see. I just want support rather than just waiting. Thank you
good luck with yours on Wednesday too x

Morning,

just a little bit of reassurance, maybe?

I went for a private reassurance scan last Thursday when I thought I was 6 weeks on the dot, but they calculate that on everyone having a 28 day cycle, ovulating on cycle day 14.

my wife and I use a private donor so I track ovulation fastidiously, I ovulated around cycle day 18. So on Thursday when they say an empty sac I freaked. Measured me at 5 weeks.

called epu, very lovely women spoke to me and said early private scans can be inaccurate. I had a scan at EPU yesterday and I’m measuring 6 weeks and there was a strong heartbeat (even though it’s not actually a heartbeat at this stage).

I really hope you have a positive experience this morning.
wishing you all the best xx

That’s such lovely news for you. The lady from the epu was so lovely on the phone yesterday so even if it is bad news I’m hoping that they will be more supportive and helpful going forward. The private clinic knew my history and were quite cold about it all, telling me to come back in 2 weeks and had no answers for me.
wishing you the best of luck in your pregnancy and thank you for your response x

@WillowRose1411 thank you.

I’ve had losses previously too, sorry to read you’ve been through so many.

I had a similar experience with the private clinic on Thursday. Barely a hello when we entered the room.

no explanations or, as you say reassurance, just “too early come back in two weeks, ok bye”

ive filed a complaint with the management about it. I think from entering the room to leaving with an abdo and internal scan we were there 5 minutes.

I really hope that you have a positive experience this morning. Will hold you in my thoughts. Let us know, if you’re able, how you get on. X

Honeybee1996 · 10/06/2025 09:54

@AiRoo so awful, isn’t it? I had a bad experience on Sunday, they didn’t give me anything other than ‘it’s too early, come back in 2 weeks’. I honestly wish I never went! I called my epu and I’ve got a scan on the 23rd but feel a bit in limbo until then): xx

AiRoo · 10/06/2025 13:59

@Honeybee1996 oh I’m sorry you had a bad experience too. There seems to be a running theme.

the website of the place I went to has the tag line of “we over a kind, friendly and reassuring service”

so in my complaint letter I quoted it and suggested they changed it!

not sure about you but I filled in a questionnaire first and they asked if I’d miscarried before. Not sure why they want to know that because once you’re in the room they don’t care at all.

I genuinely think they just want money. She diagnosed me with a 5cm fibroid outside my womb too, the epu found 5 small ones inside instead….. they were much more thorough. When I explained what had happened at the clinic they were so so nice and said they hear it all the time.

the only place I’ve had a good experience was with my wife at cherished moments in Solihull.

the 23rd does feel a long time away I agree. Would that put you around 8 weeks? I think sometimes they like to wait until then as you can see so much more, at 6 weeks like I was yesterday he said we were talking millimetres. But the little flicker was enough for me.

just remind yourself that in the early days so much can change in a matter of days. I went from Thursday, empty sac, to yesterday everything. So try and stay positive and hopeful because ultimately you can’t control it.

take all your vitamins and manifest hard. Do you have any symptoms yet? Xx

WillowRose1411 · 10/06/2025 14:04

So just had scan, they said I was measuring around 5 1/2- 6 weeks and that it was impossible to measure exact dates this early on and that private clinics have a different method of scanning/ measuring and aren’t always reliable.
they saw gestational sac, yolk sac but no fetal pole yet and that everything was normal for my dates. Although I’m meant to be 6+4 and think it’s pretty impossible to be any less than that due to how early I got my bfp??
im just not sure what to think or believe! I have another scan booked for 24th. I broke down in there, the wait just kills me. I’ve experienced this before and by the 2nd scan there was no heartbeat and I had to have medical intervention to help me miscarry. So going off of past experience I can’t help but think the worst. :( :(

The clinic was the same with me, I’d specifically booked a ‘recurrent miscarriage’ scan but they didn’t mention it or seem to give a toss when I got upset.

@WillowRose1411 i understand the anxiety completely.

let’s do some maths? So I got an lh surge on the 9th May which was cycle day 14 for me.

I inseminated on the 9th at 5pm.

i got a BFP on the 19th May, I presumed I’d ovulated on the 10th May which would put my BFP at 9dpo and if you put my dates in Premom, Flo, nhs calculator I’m like 6+5 today.

however, he said at best I was bang on 6 weeks yesterday which meant I must’ve ovulated around the 12th and got my BFP around 7dpo.

it’s all guess work. We don’t know really, even with BBT measuring, when we ovulate. I think unless you’re doing IVF it’s all guess work.

what I’m trying to say is that for where you’re at things are looking normal and fine. Literally by tomorrow or Thursday there may be a fetal pole and heartbeat, things change so fast early on.

because of your history you’re bound to guard your heart and expect the worst. But, what if this is it? This could be your time, let’s hope it is.

as I said above, there’s nothing we can do to change the outcome, the waiting game is HARD, no doubt about it, but we just have to wait it out, remain positive and hope for the best. Xx

Thank you for your reply. Your dates are so similar to mine.
I hadn’t been tracking ovulation but the 10th was actually our wedding day so I assumed we conceived at the very latest on that day as I got my bfp on the 17th.
I should be 6+ 3 today at the very earliest going by that theory.
so if I am 5 1/2- 6 weeks like they said today I would have got my bfp at about 1-4dpo?? Is that even possible 🙈
im trying to wrap my head around a possible solution but I can’t think of one- but then my brain is frazzled!

OP posts:
AiRoo · 10/06/2025 14:57

@WillowRose1411 ahhh congratulations on your wedding!!

I know what you mean, sometimes it just doesn’t make sense or add up. But I think sometimes the little orange seed grows at varying speeds at this point as it’s so early. Just like babies and toddlers they’re individuals with individual milestones.

maybe our little beans were conceived on the 10th in your case and similar in mine and they’re just a little slower but as long as they catch up it’s ok. As long as we’re not still measuring 6weeks or less at 8 week scans then we can relax.

I know that does happen, even though I saw the flicker of the heart yesterday I’ve been down several mumsnet/reddit rabbit holes of slow growing babies at this point because I’m questioning my own dates. But I truly believe that what is meant for you won’t pass you by. And if these babies are meant to stick then they absolutely will. ♥️
