hi all 👋
i’ve been a lurker here for 3 weeks now and thought i’d take the plunge and post seeing as everyone is so reassuring and lovely🥹
i’m 6 weeks pregnant with our first baby, first ivf cycle using the only embryos we had left (retrieved 21, but sadly only 2 got to blast and they were ungradeable so transferred both to increase our chances)!

my 6-7 week scan is on monday (4 days away), and to be frank i have been a mess since we found out. i thought all i wanted was a positive test and id be happy, i never anticipated this gut wrenching anxiety filled wait. reading everyone’s scans/scenarios in here has helped me through so thank you🥰
only a few more days to get through 😫

I know how you feel! I'm pregnant with my first after 3 years of infertility. We are extremely lucky that we got pregnant naturally while waiting for our first IVF appointment after a year of being on meds with no luck! I'm 7+6 today and going for my first private scan to check on baby and am so nervous!! I think everyone gets nervous but when it's been such a hard road to get to the positive I think it's only natural to be extra nervous as you've been through a lot already

UrbanSquirrel · 05/07/2024 08:13

Good luck @BusyTiger! 🤗

Hi Ladies, been keeping a low profile this week while I waited for my second scan.

Been heartbroken for the ladies who's journeys have ended this week. Early pregnancy is tough! ❤️

An update from me - last week I had a scan at 6+5 weeks and baby measured 4.7mm with no heartbeat. Was told to come back today and that there was 50/50 chance of a viable pregnancy. Today baby is 6.3mm at 7+5 weeks and Dr still couldn't see a heartbeat although might have been a slight flicker.

Back again in another week and now the chance of success has dropped to 80/20.

I don't know what to think or feel today, she did say not to give up hope but this waiting game is horrendous .

Although seeing my bean a little bigger on the screen (even if still tiny) gave me hope ❤️

They took a urine sample but I haven't had any HcG results or anything :/

UrbanSquirrel · 05/07/2024 08:44

Hello @susie1984234 and thanks for updating us. What a confusing and alarming situation - the growth sounds encouraging but how strange about the heartbeat. I'm so sorry to hear that you still don't have a clearer picture of what's going on. Was it an abdominal or internal scan, out of interest? How awful that you still have to wait. Lots of hugs and good vibes to you in the meantime. We're all here for you 💛 xxx

susie1984234 · 05/07/2024 09:26

@UrbanSquirrel it was a transvaginal scan both times. Yes the growth is confusing and I'm worried it's giving me false hope!
I mean I guess it's still possible but chances are getting slimmer.
Also pretty sure of my Ovulation as it was inducted with a trigger shot. Maybe just a seriously slow journey down the fallopian tube and very late implantataion?
I still feel pregnant so I will be hanging on to that for the next week or until proven otherwise!

UrbanSquirrel · 05/07/2024 09:57

@susie1984234 I'm going to keep hoping along with you 🤗 xxx

UrbanSquirrel · 05/07/2024 11:36

@ThisLimeDeer How did you get on with your scan yesterday? I hope despite being early it was able to offer some measure of comfort? x

OP posts:
susie1984234 · 05/07/2024 11:37

I'm just a bit confused about the growth but no heartbeat either time. Surely then there must have been a heartbeat present at the first scan even if it's now stopped? She was very quick with the ultrasound both times.

Anyway could drive myself mad with different scenarios. My boss has kindly given me the day off and DH and I are away for a nice overnight for his birthday tomorrow so that should take my mind off things!

UrbanSquirrel · 05/07/2024 11:44

@susie1984234 Yes, that's the thing. If it's grown in the interim, there must have been a heartbeat at the first scan. Surely?! It's rather concerning to hear the sonographer was so quick about it. On my scans the heartbeat hasn't necessarily all that clear, just a fluttering when you know where to look, and I really hope that she hasn't been slapdash and somehow missed it. I don't suppose you can get a second opinion if things still aren't clear next week?

@susie1984234 Have a lovely break with your husband though and try not to think about all of this too much. You deserve a treat! x

@MonkeyTales nice someone else in Belfast. I'm Belfast East so my referall form was Ulster Hospital and it said to complete at 8 weeks. When I called the guy asked also how many weeks :/
But it seems they post out apt details which I've not received but he was able to tell me mine. So I'd say definitely worth calling and checking in?
I went for a private scan last week, was reassuring. I went to bump to baby. Think ill go for the private NIPT test if I can find somewhere to get it done :)

That's who I went to as well, they seem good. I don't know if I referred myself to the right hospital even as I just moved houses and haven't changed my GP yet. Hopefully it won't be an issue... About the NIPT test I would be careful, I am by no means an expert so take this for what it's worth, I don't even know what the test was called; but my sister was told my niece would have all sorts of conditions based on some test and she almost terminated the pregnancy, but she was born without any health or deploymental issues at all, my sister spend the entire pregnancy worried about it for nothing. Maybe that's a one off, I don't know, but clearly they can be wrong.

UrbanSquirrel · 05/07/2024 12:18

Just to add about the NIPT test, @MonkeyTales, it's the most accurate of the various tests. Apparently it's over 99% accurate and has a 0.5% false positive rate, which is far, far better than the other available tests. It's used as a check when the standard NHS test throws up queries.

That's not to say that there aren't the odd errors (otherwise it would be fully 100% reliable), but of all the checks we can have done it's the one which offers greatest peace of mind (by a long way).

Just wanted to reassure anyone considering it.

OP posts:
Lidlisthebusiness · 05/07/2024 12:37

@UrbanSquirrel are you having thr NIPT test because of the results of the initial screening? Or just having it anyway? It's not something I've ever done, so was just wondering.

UrbanSquirrel · 05/07/2024 12:42

Hi @Lidlisthebusiness - I'm just getting it done anyway. I suspect my age and BMI will automatically make me high risk on the NHS screening (which I'm having on the 23rd), so I decided to take the financial hit and get myself checked out earlier, so that I know the score well in advance.

This won't be right for everyone of course. If you're younger, you probably won't have a high risk result in the NHS screening. But I also just find it comforting to have as much info as I can get. The NIPT I'm getting covers not just the trisomies but a range of other conditions too. I just feel I'll be more reassured that way - and, if there is something wrong, I'd rather know around week 11 than perhaps week 16 or something (once the NHS follow up tests kicked into gear).

Plus I get to find out the sex that way 😉

OP posts:
UrbanSquirrel · 05/07/2024 12:43

@Lidlisthebusiness I worry I may be coming across as some kind of NIPT apologist here and that is not intentional! They're not paying me or anything 😂

I've just done a lot of research into the various screening options that can supplement the standard tests, and decided this one sounds right for me x

Pepsix · 05/07/2024 13:27

Well I’ve just been for my first scan and my dates are bang on I’m 7+1, so bizarre seeing the little heartbeat flickering on the screen but also a massive relief 🥲

UrbanSquirrel · 05/07/2024 13:44

Gorgeous, @Pepsix! So happy it went well and thanks for sharing the lovely scan. It looks a little bit like a seahorse, doesn't it? 😁 x

OP posts:
elb1504 · 05/07/2024 14:26

@UrbanSquirrel It's really interesting to know more about the NIPT as I've been doing some research but just can't decide whether to go for it or not.

I never thought about it last time but I'm 5 years older now and know the risk will be higher - I'm 36 so over that 35 year old classed as 'geriatric' my bmi is fine though.

UrbanSquirrel · 05/07/2024 14:35

@elb1504 I think, if it isn't something that really appeals, you might as well wait. It's not cheap, after all, and there's no harm in waiting. If the 12 week scan throws something up, they'll offer you further options at that stage. As a first-timer, I'm not sure whether NIPT would be one of those or whether it still tends to be invasive (eg amino) testing.

I'm very happy to report back on my experience and whether it seemed to be worth it, as I seem to be gestationally a week or so ahead of many others here.

I'm just doing it because I'm an impatient little information junkie 😂 x

So sorry to hear of all the losses on this thread my heart goes out to you all.

We have our first private scan tonight, think I’m about 9 weeks feeling incredibly anxious and apprehensive about it but fingers crossed.

Yeah I don't know what test she took, so might have been a less reliable one, or maybe she was in the 0.5%..

BusyTiger · 05/07/2024 16:50

We went for our first private scan and everything went well! I calculated I was 7+6 and baby is measuring 7+4 which obviously is fine. It was absolutely wonderful to see their heart beating away and we just feel so incredibly lucky

ThisLimeDeer · 05/07/2024 17:23

I’ve had my 6 week private scan yesterday, however… it turns out I’m actually only 5+3!
I’m absolutely amazed with the technology. The sonographer took her time as baby is so tiny right now, however baby was located in the right place and we saw a heartbeat which I was absolutely amazed by! I think it’s unusual to see anything this early but I’m so glad we tried.

my due date now moved to beginning of March so I probably belong in a March thread but because I’ve been reading this thread I hope you don’t mind if I remain for now!
