@PlumpHobbit I totally get that about the nausea and eating! Also on vitamins - I didn't like all the ingredients in Pregnacare (why put talc in?!) and due to my specific diet i bought from an independent company online. But Boots also have some more "natural" ones. I don't have a specific recommendation but found a lot out there. For hayfever, you can try inhaling Olbas oil and if you can face it, buy a sinus rinse kit. I have quite intense hayfever and they both help me - and obv natural, no risk to baby.

Has anyone else got the weird taste in mouth? Mine's NOT metallic but it's bloody annoying, can't describe it, tried mints but they sort of associated with it and made me feel sick 😷 Hopefully it ends at the end of first trimester... four weeks to go! 🙈

Also, the differences between folate and folic acid supplements are interesting. Folic acid is the synthetic version

What are people's thoughts on pregnancy vitamins?

I've been taking folic acid since September, and have upped this to the prescription 5mg on discovering I was pregnant and anyone with 30 plus bmi should have a stronger dose

However looking on amazon there's all sorts of others? I struggle with anything bigger than a paracetamol tablet and gag like mad on the plastic coated tablets, and I can remember picking a pack of the pregnacare vitamins up for someone once and was horrified at the size of the tablets

Diet isn't the best so feel like I should take something, but there's no use if I can't swallow them, especially as I'm feeling queasy in general

Struggling to drink cups of tea, usually I live off it! Trying to force down a cracker or 2 when I start to feel slightly hungry, had a couple of baked potatoes for tea with some butter and black pepper, that went down quite nicely

I spoke to a pharmacy about hay-fever tablets and they said no 😭 that isn't helping as all the snot from the hay-fever is adding to feeling sick

Will join the FB group once I've had the scan, don't want to tempt fate and so far only told my mum and DH, so don't want to end up coming across someone I know in there

Had a banging headache all afternoon from the weather, I'm massively prone to them and struggling with only being able to take paracetamol

The feeling sick is a horrible cycle, you don't want to eat because you feel sick, but feel sick because of not eating. Not actually been sick, yet, although probably not quite in the window for that hitting. Think smell is starting to increase, my cups of tea at work smelt "weird" and unappealing, although smelt the milk at home and that was OK so maybe theirs was about to turn

In my booking appointment my midwife said they only recommend taking folic acid and vitamin D then stopping at 12 weeks, apparently you don't need anything else unless you have issues with absorbing vitamins etc ☺️ I found that quite reassuring because I was worried I should have been taking something else!

I'm going to ask my GP/midwife when back from holiday if I can take Omega 3 safely, DH suggested it as I'm off a lot of protein.

I feel you SO much on the nausea and struggling to eat cycle 😖

PlumpHobbit · 22/07/2024 23:04

I had the weird taste in my mouth waking up this morning, but like pp, not metallic I don't think

It worries me I've only been taking my folic acid and am 4-5 weeks hoping I haven't messed anything up

The feeling sick cycle is horrible, and the dull ache of the stomach because you're hungry. Also tbe bloat and indigestion

I definitely don't feel any sort of radiance or glow!!

SprinGarden · 23/07/2024 07:31

I m very stressed today.. Got a scan today as I had some bleeding g on Saturday....Feels like the symptoms I was feeling like the nausea and lower abdo pressure have gone since yest. Pregnancy test still positive but I guess it would be as the hormone is still high. 😢

I'm taking inositol as a powder. Might be worth exploring if other vitamins are offered this way? I took inositol to help regulate my periods but also hear it reduces the risk of gestational diabetes in women with PCOS so going to keep taking it. I just mix it in to my morning smoothie or a glass of water.

I also take methylfolate from Zita West instead of folic acid, as it's the more digestible form of folate. Though comes in a plastic capsule you could empty the contents of the capsule I guess, and add it to a drink.

Other than that I'm just trying to eat a rainbow of veg and really make an effort cooking tasty meals. Lots of fish and protein heavy meals apparently good for reducing nausea so (as I don't eat meat) I'm making meals with lots of beans and pulses (cannelini bean mash instead of potato mash, chilli with pinto and black beans, chickpeas in a roast veg and feta salad), which also have the added bonus of reducing constipation 🤣

Good luck @SprinGarden, don't assume the worst with bleeding. I read that about 25% of women bleed during their pregnancy. It's not always bad news and can be for a range of reasons. Try to stay positive x

Forgot to say @PlumpHobbit I'm also taking vitamin D as a liquid spray. Just spray it onto your tongue so that's an option if you don't like tablets. Also found it on Zita West website. Not cheap though!

Is there any particular brand / type of folic acid people would recommend?

Hope all goes well @SprinGarden

Hi!

Returning to Mumsnet today after 4.5 years of infertility.

We had a Day 5 embryo transferred on 5th July, and got out BFP on the evening of the 17th... Due date 23rd March, I'm 5+1.

Feeling absolutely thrilled, of course, but after all this time it's incredibly overwhelming to finally be here.

We have our first scan with our IVF clinic on August 2nd, when I'll be 6+5. And I'm pretty sure the wait for that is so far harder than the wait to test!!

I really rate the Zita West methylfolate. They also do it on subscription so it just turns up before you run out! I have been taking it for about six months. It's the more natural form of folic acid (which is usually synthetic) and therefore easier to digest. Some people can't actually digest the synthetic stuff, due to genetics. I've no idea if that's me but generally prefer to choose natural over synthetic products when I can.

Congratulations! This wait is the hardest isn't it! I stupidly thought the TWW was the hard part, didn't think about the 9 month wait afterwards 🤣

Welcome and congratulations, we're also pregnant through IVF although we already have a 3yo daughter. Allow yourself time to feel all the emotions, I punished myself last time for being wrought with anxiety and felt the whole process of multiple transfers and all that goes with IVF took the excitement away. I'm trying to be calmer this time x

Good luck @SprinGarden for your scan today x

LV1987 · 23/07/2024 10:06

@CatmumTTC thank you ❤️ I've never been able to get pregnant naturally, so naively thought I could I deal with this really easily, as what's another week and a half when we've been waiting this long?? But yeah... It's tougher than I thought 😬

@wildhay I am so pleased to connect with another IVF mum to be! All of my peers had their kids before I had even started trying and realised there were issues, so the whole trying part was really lonely for us. Your transfer must have been at a pretty similar time to ours?

veggiebuns · 23/07/2024 10:08

Can I ask everyone that's further along than me, when did you contact your midwives to register your pregnancy? First time round so I'm wondering if I should wait a little or if it's best to contact them straight away? Thanks!! ☺️

CaffeinatedLondoner · 23/07/2024 10:16

PeachMartin · 22/07/2024 20:29

Thank you so much for sharing your story, I really appreciate it. It sounds like you went through an extremely difficult time and have done amazingly to get to where you are today. 🩷

I have been trying get out and exercise as much as possible and use headspace for meditation and breathing exercises.

I have spoken to my GP previously re my MH, which I normally focused on my health but since becoming pregnant, I have been worrying about all sorts of issues that are completely out of my control and end up in an endless loop of panic and anxiety. Like you said in your post, there are days when I just want to crawl out of my own skin.

I really hope the anxiety subsides soon but will absolutely raise with the midwife at my booking appointment in a couple of weeks. Thanks again 🩷

You're more than welcome. I'm super happy to keep in touch and check-in 💛
If your anxiety previously focused on health (even though I know it might no longer focus on that in these crazy hormone times!) there's an amazing website called 'No More Panic' which I've found incredibly helpful with those kinds of thoughts in the past.
In terms of uncontrollable and excessive worrying, there are also lots of pregnancy safe medications that can help with that. I found belt-and-braces (e.g., CBT and medication) was/is the best way to cope with that gnawing, life-consuming type of anxiety.
Try to be reassured that this is temporary, either way. I've been in some horrible places with anxiety over the years, and I have always come out the other side – you'll be the same. You've got through all your previous bad days so there's no reason you aren't capable of getting through these ones, too. But if you need that extra help, absolutely ask for it 💫x

I contacted mine in the first few days then had my booking appt at 6 weeks, my next appt at 8+5 and I received an invite to my u/sound for 11+6. Some tests needs to be done before 10 weeks so it's never too early, it takes so long for them to do admin anyway. x

InvisibleDragon · 23/07/2024 10:33

@veggiebuns I also contacted right away. Won't have any appointments until about 8 weeks, but I find it reassuring to know they are there and in my calendar. I also think if anything does go wrong that having an open referral to the midwife service makes it obvious that I'm pregnant!

Hope it goes well today. Try not to read into symptoms so much - yesterday if I even brushed my boobs with my arm I could have screamed and today they feel normal. A couple of days ago I thought I was getting some nausea but that’s eased off too. I got 3+ yesterday on Clearblue weeks (at 4w6) so I figure it’s okay for now… symptoms just have a habit of being on an off and can depend on how tired you are, what you’ve eaten and (of course) how much you’re analysing them!

Will be thinking of you. Hopefully it’s just a bit of a bleed which I believe happen more regularly than most of us know!

I gave my surgery a call the week I found out to ask what their process was. I have moved since I had my daughter. I had to pop into the surgery and fill in a form. She phoned me the following week (6 weeks) and arranged my booking the following week at 7 weeks.
She emailed me my free prescription certificate after the phone call so I get free prescriptions, I'm on regular medication so this is good for me to get sort early

If I recall correctly when I had my daughter I phoned up my GP surgery and they booked me the booking appointment with the midwife at around 8 weeks.

The process varies from surgery to surgery so I think the best thing to do is give the GP surgery a call and see what they want you to do.

I saw the surgery MH nurse and the GP yesterday and it was helpful for them to already know I am pregnant.

hope292 · 23/07/2024 12:48

Really nervous as I am 7 weeks pregnant but barely have any symptoms. Slight nausea, tiredness and cramping but they come and go and otherwise feel quite normal. I don't know if I am just overthinking. I have my booking appointment with the midwife on the 6th August and scan on the 28th August.

just really worried how normal I am feeling...

26dX · 23/07/2024 13:23

6+3 now and only feel a bit nauseous when I'm hungry which seems to feel like every hour at the minute 😂 any one else eating like a horse at the minute?

Melusina123 · 23/07/2024 13:29

@26dX yes definitely, I'm eating much more than usual particularly in the morning. Last time I put on a heap of weight in tri 1 due to needing to eat to manage nausea. The tragedy is I didn't enjoy any of it, eating is such a chore ATM and usually I love my food.

@hope292 hang in there, the odds are very much in your favour with or without symptoms. Some people just get very lucky and feel fine! Or you could be hit by a truckload of nausea tomorrow. There's nothing you can do but take each day as it comes.

@veggiebuns I self referred at I think about 5+1. Was umming and aching about where to refer to but in the end I think it's best to do it early and get in the system as it were.

@SprinGarden good luck for the scan, hope all goes well.

I'm 8+0 by my reckoning today and the nausea has really stepped up, I feel so sorry for myself. 😩 I think last time 8ish wks was the worst and from 9 and especially 10 things started to get better so I'm just hanging in there counting the days.

NewMumSendHelp · 23/07/2024 13:42

Need to have a big grumble as I am feeling awful today. Have thrown up everything that has gone in. Have a banging headache. Just logged off of work for the afternoon as I cannot continue today. But feel so bad as I was off sick all last week too. Feeling so helpless and pathetic. I don’t remember my last pregnancy being so awful but maybe my brain has blocked it out. My midwife has been very helpful and is prescribing me some anti sickness so I hope that comes through quickly and I can pick it up ASAP! Feeling so sorry for myself 😔

Superscientist · 23/07/2024 13:53

I'm also 8 weeks today @Melusina123 and also feeling sorry for myself.
I've not been to work this week with nausea and vomiting. I got cyclizine prescribed yesterday and I haven't been sick yet today but I haven't been able to move from the sofa with nausea today.

I'm dreading tomorrow as it's my non working day so I'll have my daughter home with me.

Sorry you are struggling too @NewMumSendHelp . Can you chase it? My GP gave me the script directly and then I got the pills 15 minutes later in the pharmacy
