We are struggling so much with naps, trying out one nap today, my little boy has so many tantrums when he's sleepy though, usually I'd be going into his dark bedroom with him now, I hope he can keep going until around 12.

Sunshineclouds11 · 08/05/2025 09:33

@CheetocatWeve been on one nap for couple month now, take him into the garden when you see him starting to struggle fresh air will sort him out.

Thank you, I was thinking getting outside might help if he needs stimulation!

We’ve being doing 1 nap for a couple of months now too and it’s been the best thing, especially for night sleep cos now he sleeps through. At first I was doing just after 12 down for a nap but it’s a bit later and 1-1:30 he goes down now. Some days are 2 hours and over, other days a bit less 😊
being outside definitely keeps him awake cos he’s so nosy

@Cheetocat we've also been doing one nap for the last six weeks or so. It's a dream we get at least an hour, but usually closer to two hours. I don't do the nap 'half way' through our day - usually he's up at 6.30am and I do the nap 5 hours later at 11.30am-1/1.30pm then bed 6 hours later.

He'd fight the basis so much before but now it's so much better.

Cheetocat · 08/05/2025 13:43

Thanks ladies, I put him down at 12 and he woke up just over an hour later but fell asleep in my arms again when I gave him a cuddle so I've put him back in the cot and he settled back down just with my hand on him. His second nap was ending around 4 when he was on two naps so I won't cap this nap, he definitely won't sleep until 4.

He just started sleeping through this past week and I think that's what's making him drop a nap, he has always been extremely hard to get to sleep and I've been fighting so hard to make him more comfortable with it and to feel safe in his routine, hopefully a bit more sleep pressure keeps him on track.

I'm a fan of an early nap if flagging as I find if push him too much he wakes early overtired.
So like if knackered after 4 days at nursery he can do 11:15-14:15 on a Friday and I'm waking him at the 3 hour mark to conserve bedtime. Usually wakes 6:15-6:45.
He does 1.5-2h at nursery but they put him down a bit later as he takes a while with lunch, but I start at 10:45 at home 😅 at the start be did 2.5-3h there too while adjusting.
We typically do 18:30 bedtime since the switch.
Been on one nap for a month or so, with maybe one 2 nap day when poorly, woke early and just knackered. But I did cap the first at 15 mins (he fell asleep in my arms so felt mean!) to make sure would go down for the second.

Thanks for sharing, that makes so much sense.

Little boy slept through but he woke up at 6:20 instead of his usual 7 because the temperature in his room dropped, so I'm worried he won't last very well. I'm not against a 15 minute nap although I'm a big softie when it comes to forcing him to wake up, I might not have the guts. 😂

Ihatewinding · 09/05/2025 11:26

@Cheetocat we also found he only started doing such long naps if he had a bottle just before he sleeps, we have reduced it to 125ml but seems to keep him going as he is a slow eater and just gets a bit fed up at lunch. But when he's crashing honestly can just try lunch at 10:15/30, top up with a breastfeed if still doing, or a small bottle, change their bum and put them down. He has done a few days at nursery in the first couple of weeks where he's done 10:30-12/12:30 and powered through until 18:30 (rejected attempt at a second nap) with some overtiredness at bedtime. He also wakes on earlier side if coughing, teething, cold or leaks his nappy so do play a bit by ear with timings. He even wakes early if he's not getting long enough naps 🤦🏻‍♀️ as he's a higher sleep needs baby so wakes early if overtired. But in other babies that might be a sign of too much sleep... Ahhh the minefield haha so trial and error and then will they'll change again 🫠

I always breastfeed him before nap and bed, it does make him sleep way better when he gets something to fill his little tummy before going down. I did babyled weaning and my little boy is not fussy at all but meal times still vary a lot and sometimes I think he must be running on fumes. 😂 We went out for an hour to keep busy before lunch and I started breastfeeding him at 11:45 and he was asleep in his cot by 12, bless him, I think 2.5 hours would be ideal for him but I really don't mind being flexible.

The weeing through the nappy thing drives me mad, I feel like I've tried every brand and size but he still leaks at random and it really disturbs our routine. Recently I was feeding him right after waking up and he sat up laughing and started doing a splashing motion with his hands as if he was in the bath, turns out he was peeing at that moment and it was leaking out onto both of us. 🤣

CheeseAndCrackersx · 09/05/2025 15:38

Anyone else’s LO hate lying down for nappy changes? Changing a pooey 1 standing up is a risky job cos you can guarantee he’ll try and sit 🤣 but he absolutely hates lying down for them now even with distraction 😄

& when can you do away with vests with the buttons on cos keeping him close long enough to do them back up is a mission too 😂

Mine hates lying down for a nappy change too, we usually make animal noises at him and try to keep him interested so he's not reaching down to grab the nappy or run away. 😁

I like vests because I feel like they hold the nappy in place but the biggest thing I like is that my child's tummy is not exposed. He hasn't worn a vest a few times while at home and he was like winnie the pooh every time, I hate that!! 😂

Hi, it's going pretty well, though he's started waking up earlier in the morning. We get up around 6am, nap at 12pm and depending on the day he naps anywhere from 1 - 3 hours, bed as usual at 8pm. He falls asleep without a fight most of the time which is life changing compared to how things were before.

He has an appointment today at nap time, no idea what I'm going to do. I might try get him down for 30 minutes around 9:30?

Havanalily1806 · 16/05/2025 14:39

@Cheetocat
hey, would you ever consider capping the nap and waking?

we had a rough 7month-13 month with sleep and actually used a sleep consultant in the end.

totally life changing. Basically her sleep tank is around 13.5 hours which we’re told is quite high compared to other babes. So she naps for 1.5 hours goes down between 12-12:30 is always awake by 2pm so that she is tired enough to fall asleep at bedtime without any fuss. She actually now asks to go to bed 😂

she then sleeps 7:30-7 every day (most days we have to wake her up!) but if she had a longer nap (which most days she totally would, she’d have less sleep left in her “sleep tank” for over night and would wake early. Its all worked out in a 24 hour sleep period.

so if they’re napping 2-3 hours, maybe try capping this at 2 to start with or 1 hour 45 minutes and see if it gives you longer over night stretches of sleep x

CheeseAndCrackersx · 17/05/2025 15:19

Hi Ladies, I have a bit of a conundrum; basically we’re going on a caravan holiday in July and there’s no WiFi so it would mean I’d have to buy another baby monitor but I’m just wondering do I really need 1? Basically here at home I close his bedroom door to stop the cat going in being a pest. On holiday the pets won’t be with us, so he could actually have his door open that’s even if the travel cot fits in the 2nd bedroom, at this minute I don’t know, so he could actually end up sleeping in the same room as us so then it’d end up being even more a waste of money. I’m just stuck on whether it’s really vital now he’s that bit older, and he sleeps through.

@CheeseAndCrackersx I personally wouldn't bother! If you're confident you can hear him, I think it's okay!
I don't take mine when I visit my parents or in laws for overnight stays. And tbh at home I only use mine when we're sleeping for the alerts. I rarely have to actually check the screen otherwise!

I don't think capping the nap will make much of a difference, sometimes he naturally only sleeps for one hour and his morning wake time doesn't change. I think for right now we'll just be getting up at 6.

It's tempting but I don't think it's actually needed. We live in an apartment and I can still hear my son waking up when he's in his own bedroom if the monitor battery dies in night when I've forgotten to charge it. In a caravan I'd say you'd hear them even more easily! Mummies have super hearing!

@Cheetocat is your son waking in the night too cos of them? Saturday night and lastnight he has woke at 3 (sort of around the time calprofen will wear off I think). Saturday night he wouldn’t resettle at all, I think was awake nearly 2 hours but last night wasn’t that bad cos he didn’t cry or anything, but he did keep lying down then after about 10/15 mins he’d sit back up and he kept doing that for good while.
