Just curious. I’ve only had 12 weeks and 20 weeks so far but it seems most have more these days.

I had four with my first because I paid for two privately.

I had two with my second because I didn't pay for any.

One at 12 weeks and one at 20 weeks is standard.

Abitorangelooking · 01/06/2024 10:53

Well some people pay for private scans. NHS will offer more if necessary. I’ve had three pregnancies. First one I had extra growth scan at 30 weeks. Second one just the two. Third pregnancy was twins and due to type I had fortnightly scans from 16 weeks.

WhatNoRaisins · 01/06/2024 10:54

If you've had certain complications or are over 40 you go into a higher risk category and have more regular scans.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 01/06/2024 10:58

3 but only because I had gestational diabetes.

So 12 and 20 weeks as standard, then one at about 33 weeks because my bump grew more than expected and that one showed my baby was mahoosive and prompted the scheduling of an induction at 37.5 weeks to prevent me trying to birth an elephant.

Bit of an exaggeration maybe but she was 8lb 11oz at birth so their prediction of 11lb at 40 weeks wouldn't have been far off.

CheeseWisely · 01/06/2024 10:58

I've had 5 and if I'm still pregnant on Friday I'll have a 6th (I'm due today). I'm 40 though, and one of them was a repeat as they couldn't see what they needed the first time.

I think our health authority just do 2 usually for a normal low risk pregnancy.

Mauhea · 01/06/2024 10:59

I would have only had the 12 and 20 week scans as I didn't want to shell out for private scans when I had no concerns and those ones were entirely unremarkable. As it happens I've been diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 28 weeks so get 4-weekly growth scans to make sure baby's not getting too chonky.

InTheRainOnATrain · 01/06/2024 11:01

Couldn’t tell you exactly but I reckon it was around 10. Starting at 8 weeks to confirm pregnancy in a viable location. Then scanned at every antenatal appointment between then and delivery at 39 weeks. Started my pregnancy in the US, moved to the UK in the second trimester but went private instead of NHS.

TribeofFfive · 01/06/2024 11:04

In my last pregnancy I had them at 12, 20 then 3 growth scans at 28, 32 & 36 weeks as my bump hardly grew between midwife appointments and they wanted to check baby was growing.

PitterPatter3 · 01/06/2024 11:04

I was just being nosey really. Seems like I’m not so unusual just having the standard two then. My yoga class all seem to have had masses (early reassurance scans, private gender scans, etc.) but they’re a small sample and perhaps not as typical as I thought.

8,12,16,19,20 then one a month due to pain during pregnancy

allgoodthings84 · 01/06/2024 11:43

With my first 3, 2 standard nhs and a growth scan later on.

Second pregnancy I had lots. I had a private at 9 weeks after 2 very early losses (both 6 weeks) then nhs 12 weeks, then nhs at 13 weeks after a few days spotting, then private gender scan at 17 weeks (more as I was anxious still after bleeding weeks earlier), then nhs 20 weeks. From 28 weeks I had loads of nhs growth scans as measurements (both fundal and actual scan) were always all over the place

Clawedino · 01/06/2024 11:47

I had more than average because I had: 1 private scan (thankful I had booked it as I started bleeding prior to this and wanted to know I still had a baby!), then another reassurance scan at hospital after another bleed, the 2 usual 12 and 20 week scans, 4D scan, and then 2 or so growth scans due to my Gestational Diabetes.

Alwaystired23 · 01/06/2024 12:05

I had them at 12 weeks, 20 weeks, then growth scans every 4 weeks with both dc. Dc1 was thought to have been small, ended up being born 4 weeks early, and 6lb. Dc 2 was going to be big. He was 4 days over due and under 10lb by a few ounces. It depends on the circumstances if you need or pay for extra scans.

Also had an extra scan at 34 weeks as my waters broke with dc1.

LizzeyBenett · 01/06/2024 12:17

I'm 37 weeks and I think I've had at least 6-7 so far one was a private early scan and another was an additional scan because I have gestational diabetes due back to hospital in a week and they usually scan and measure baby but it's very quick

SnookyPook · 01/06/2024 13:28

With my son I had 2 - 12 and 20 wks.

Current pregnancy .. lost count and only at 29+5! We had early monitoring with EPU due to 3 recurring losses last year and we're now on growth scans due to small size... I think I've already had around 10 scans and going bi-weekly from next week!! We've got a whole album for him before he's even here 😂

ShinyWorthKeeping · 01/06/2024 13:31

DD1 is 12 and I had 2 scans with her at 12 and 20 weeks.

I am 34 weeks pregnant with DD2 and I have had 4 so far, another scheduled and probably more after that. The first was around 7 weeks as I had a big bleed, then 12 and 20 weeks and the extra scans are because she is above 95th centile.

Virtualhelp · 01/06/2024 13:33

I’ve had four. The usual 12 and 20 weeks plus additional one at 21 weeks as baby was uncooperative and then a growth scan at 36 weeks

GreenFairies · 01/06/2024 13:35

My first pregnancy had no complications so I had 3 as standard on the NHS - 12, 20 and 36 weeks. I also had 4 private scans.

My second pregnancy also had the 3 as standard. But I had a few complications so from 30 weeks, I was scanned every week.

TheSnowyOwl · 01/06/2024 13:49

I probably had about fifty NHS scans in my last pregnancy, including three in one day. I was high risk.

sarahc336 · 01/06/2024 13:51

With dd1 I had 3 as I had a growth scan as I was measuring big at 30 weeks and dd2 I had 4 as we had to see fetal medicine after our 20 week scan and again I had to have a growth scan. You only need extra scans if there's a problem

Natsku · 01/06/2024 13:53

Lost count with my oldest. Had one at 9 weeks because I was bleeding, then the 12 week scan, then had the 20 week scan early at 18 weeks and needed another one a few weeks later because some issues were spotted. Then had several scans in the 3rd trimester because I was in hospital with kidney and appendix problems so there were scans to check my problems but they also checked baby too, and then scans just to check her. And then at the end another scan to see how big she was to make sure I'd be able to deliver vaginally (after having had major surgery) - though that scan was a bit rubbish, they said she was going to be average and she came out a whopper!

With my youngest I had a couple of quick scans at the maternity clinic before their machine broke, plus the 12 week and 20 week scans.

Weallnamechangesometimes · 01/06/2024 13:57

3 with the first 12,20 and I think around 28 as bump was measuring tiny (that’ll be the hg)

5 with the second. 7 weeks due to bleed (previous miscarriage the year before) 12 weeks, private at 16, 20 week, growth scan at 30 weeks due to growing too much between bump measurements.

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 01/06/2024 13:58

At least 10 in each pregnancy. I have APS and also developed GD so high risk.

Most recent pregnancy I had 6,8,10,12 weeks at the recurrent miscarriage clinic, then 13 weeks was NIPT. I moved house so my next hospital wanted to do the 12 week scan again, so had that at 15 weeks. 18 weeks anomaly scan. She wasn’t playing so had it repeated at 19 weeks. They picked up an anomaly with the umbilical cord so I had a follow up for that at 22 weeks. 24 weeks I had a detailed placenta scan. Growth scans at 28, 32 and 36 weeks. Extra scan about 2 days before delivery as she wasn’t moving. Was very glad when we hit 37 weeks and I was getting wheeled down to theatre! I’m not having another pregnancy.

Sara1988 · 01/06/2024 13:59

8 weeks (private)
12 weeks
16 weeks (prem prevention)
19 weeks (prem prevention)
20 weeks anatomy
22 weeks second anatomy as baby wasn't in the right position

I'll also be having 32 weeks as my placenta is currently low and 34, 36, 38 growth scans. So about 10 by end of pregnancy.

All of these are to prevent issues I'm at risk of but all have been absolutely fine.
