Silly question but do partners normally go to midwife appointments? I’ve only had one so far that he couldn’t come to because of work but have another tomorrow which he in theory is available for.

WeightoftheWorld · 27/05/2024 12:07

@MMitsky it really depends on the family and their circumstances. I'd say generally more don't go than do, because of work and childcare commitments for other children (because after all, there are more 2nd+ time mothers at any one time than first timers). But if my DH happens to be available then he would come, just usually he isn't. We prioritise the dating and anatomy scans but otherwise I've always gone to the vast majority of appointments alone. Although actually I had DC1 with me at most of the appointments for DC2 haha.

Sara1988 · 27/05/2024 12:33

@Mitsky my partner has been to all of mine as he's self employed. I want him as involved as possible so he knows exactly what is going on with me and baby but obviously we're really extremely lucky to be able to do this.

CluelessInLondon · 27/05/2024 13:00

@Mitsky My husband came to the booking appointment but he isn't coming to my routine midwife appointments - he will probably come to the one where we discuss the birth plan in more detail as I want him to know about that so he can speak for me if I can't do it myself. But otherwise I don't really see the point in him coming just to see me getting my blood pressure checked!

Has anyone experienced pelvic girdle pain and could explain what it's like? I'm having some discomfort and am wondering if it's that.

CharlieBalf · 27/05/2024 13:40

@Sara1988 I had pelvic girdle or SPD with my first two. For me it felt like id done three straight days at the gym without stretching... absolute agony! Achy muscles all around the pelvis and upper thighs and lower back. Couldn't get comfortable at night or sitting. A yoga ball helped loads.

The ligaments surrounding the pelvis get too much of a certain chemicle during pregnancy (relaxin?) and therfore everything turns to.jelly and there is nothing holding your pelvis together.

Made it very difficult to do the everyday things like load the dishwasher or lift bags of shopping into the car. By the end of both pregnancies, I was basically immobile. But I think I had it pretty bad, and there is a scale and some could just have mild discomfort.

My midwife sent me on a course where they suggested ways which might help like a belly band, keeping your feet up as much as possible, legs together as much as possible and even gave me crutches.

I hope its not.too bad for you, and if its any consolation it disappeared literally the moment my babies were born. Praying I won't get it again this time. Its. Really debilitating and hard to watch other pregnant ladies run around right up till 40 weeks when I was bed bound from 36.

Have you spoken to your midwife? The sooner ypu get advice the better 😊

mrssunshinexxx · 27/05/2024 13:54

@Sara1988 I had pgp in second pregnancy I believe it developed due to me carrying my other baby around 2/4/7 but the time I had the second the first was 15 months old so quite a weight and obviously made me walk wonky, it hurt a lot but literally the moment the baby was out it was gone

Sara1988 · 27/05/2024 14:22

@CharlieBalf @mrssunshinexxx oh gosh this sounds horrible! Hope you don't get it this time round. I'm not convinced it's pgp I have. If feels like painful pressure, mostly on the right. A bit like when you really need a pee?

People keep mentioning speaking to midwife, but I've never been able to get through to mine.

LuxeBiscuit · 27/05/2024 16:02

@Sara1988 I've had round ligament pain. It may be that, especially if it's only on one side.

Sara1988 · 27/05/2024 17:13

@LuxeBiscuit others on here have described round ligament pain as feeling a bit like stitch, so not sure it's that

LuxeBiscuit · 27/05/2024 17:51

@Sara1988 when I had it, it was a dull ache on one side of my pelvis that lasted on and off for three days. I also occasionally feel a pull if I move in a strange position or sneeze but that is only momentary pain.

Sara1988 · 27/05/2024 17:59

@LuxeBiscuit mine is kinda sharp. It feels as though the baby is poking their head into my pelvis - which I know isn't the case. It's just so hard knowing is this normal or do I speak to mau.

LSW82 · 27/05/2024 18:15

@Mitsky mine has never come to a midwife appt, with first we were still in covid so didn't even think about it & same this time, mine are usually blood pressure & quick chat so nothing exciting 🤣 He does go to all scans though & could if he wanted to come to midwife as he can easily get time off work for appointments

Sara1988 · 29/05/2024 08:46

Hi all, panicking a bit! Started feeling movement yesterday (first baby 21+3) couldn't believe how active they were! Then last night and this morning nothing. Is that normal this early on?

Mitsky · 29/05/2024 10:15

He did come to the appointment in the end and actually it was really nice because we heard the heartbeat and he said it felt really magical.

I don’t think I’ll drag him to the next one unless anything changes!

Bee49 · 29/05/2024 11:38

@Sara1988 really normal at this stage, especially if you’ve only just started feeling them. They’ve probably just changed position and you can’t feel the movement anymore.
I’ve been feeling movement since 15 weeks (second baby, 20 weeks now) and I still wouldn’t say it’s regular. It’s definitely getting more often but some days I still don’t feel them very much.
I think they only start to worry if there’s a change in movement from 24-26 weeks. Plenty time yet!

WeightoftheWorld · 29/05/2024 15:43

@Sara1988 yes, when they're this tiny they can move a lot and in certain positions you may still be unable to feel them. I only really feel some movement so far when I go to bed so far as I guess nothing is distracting me then and babies notoriously love to wake up and wriggle around loads when you're trying to sleep. However if you're ever concerned call your local service for advice.

Just wishing time would fast forward here as waiting for my scan on the weekend and so nervous about it.

Sara1988 · 29/05/2024 17:06

@Bee49 @WeightoftheWorld thanks both for the reassurance. Have been feeling a little movement today now the day has moved on, just not quite as noticeable as before. Every week I think I'll be less anxious and then something else crops up!

Good luck with your scan @WeightoftheWorld we had ours last week but have to go back because baby was in a funny position for some of the measurements.

AnxiousD · 29/05/2024 19:56

Has anyone had to go back for their 20wk so an due to lack of movement /unable to get measurements?

spudnik1 · 29/05/2024 20:03

Flight out jet 2 . No-one asked for fit to fly. Although had a loose dress on and a coat. Even was offered a glass of prosecco on the plane 😳 it wasn't until I pointed out I was pregnant they noticed 😅

mrssunshinexxx · 29/05/2024 20:07

@spudnik1 good to know. I've got my midwife to do me a fit to fly anyway even tho I'll only be 23 weeks but then nothing bad can happen with it! X

WeightoftheWorld · 29/05/2024 20:11

@AnxiousD yes I had to do with DC1, they couldn't get all the heart measurements properly because of her position. I went back a couple of weeks later and they just did that part of the scan, all was fine. It's super common.

@AnxiousD exactly the same for me last week.

Had our scan yesterday and the sonographer was on the verge of rebooking it when baby finally moved into a better position. She'd had me in all sorts of positions to try to see the bit she needed to measure. I think it's quite common at this stage where they've got more room to get into awkward positions

cm3212 · 30/05/2024 10:33

Ahh @spudnik1 that's good, I plan to wear a floaty top and jacket so think I'll be fine. Hope you have a fab holiday! X
