Hey guys, new thread for the April due dates.

Looks like the other thread maxed out before someone could make a new one, so I'll tag a few people and then if they could tag a few and they tag a few and so on, so we can try and get everyone in.

There's no way I can get everyone tagged myself, it's a nightmare on mobile.

OP posts:

@Mrsttcno1 yeah mines exactly the same she has to be on my chest n nothing else! My only worry with it is I start to feel myself nodding off so I'm having to stand up n bob around with her so I don't fall asleep too.
It's so strange how after around 11pm she just reverts back to sleeping like an angel as if nothing happened 😂

ControlShiftDelete · 06/05/2024 14:52

11pm is awesome, mine settles at 1am 😭

Anyone else's little cherub very much affected by 'the witching hour' and if so any tips to soothe them. I'm finding between 6pm-11pm she's impossible to console? X

OMG YES!
Mine is from 8pm-1am. Not necessarily that whole time, but always during that time!
Some days she screams for 3h straight, sometimes only for 20 minutes every hour, sometimes just an hour total...
Nothing works to soothe her...

Hoping it goes away soon-ish!

chlo299 · 06/05/2024 17:39

@ASGIRC @Aprilpudding24 mine was the same now she's sleeping through the night and only wakes up for feeding twice 🤞🏻 what I've noticed helped was walking up and down the stairs 😅she stops crying instantly and then just stays silently awake

Ttcmumma · 06/05/2024 18:08

Mine screams until she poops, whether that be 20 mins or 12 hours 🤣🤣. And it's not constipated poo when it comes out. These babies are a mystery!! Sleeps well in her next to me crib once she finally settles tho

Mine sleeps through the night, but that doesnt mean she doesnt scream during her witching hour!
Once she settles, she will sleep until 6/7am. which is great!
I dont have stairs in my house... but nothing really soothes her. The sling sometimes helps, but it is hit and miss.

Pinkstuffs · 06/05/2024 18:44

@Ttcmumma my baby also screams until he poops, I don’t think he’s constipated as it comes out soft but nothing will soothe him until he goes!

@ASGIRC do you not need to feed in the night? Midwives have told us to wake baby every 3 hours to feed which is pretty depressing when he’s clearly sound asleep! My DS is only 2 weeks old though, when can you drop a feed?

Aprilpudding24 · 06/05/2024 19:11

@Pinkstuffs my midwife told me to stop waking her up for feeds if she's still sleeping now. My little chunk put on 6oz in the first week n a half n they were happy she is eating well and told me to just let her tell me now when she's hungry. I don't know if it's just because she gained a good amount of weight though so maybe ask your midwife what she thinks first? I'm bottle feeding as well I'll add so it's probs different.

94kj · 06/05/2024 19:21

Can I ask you all for advice re dressing my baby. She's 11 days old and I'm constantly worried that I am not dressing her properly I.e. too many or not enough layers. I try to just feel her chest and back regularly to see if she is hot or cold but I genuinely don't know how to know how many layers she needs? I know this makes me sound a bit stupid. Every day I dress her in a vest and another layer (usually a babygro) for day and night and then at night I put a blanket over her and if it's a little chilly in the day I do the same. Im so worried about her over heating. I keep my house between the recommended 16-20 degrees. How do you all judge how many layers are needed? Please don't judge I'm a FTM and a bit anxious x

Pinkstuffs · 06/05/2024 19:44

@94kj we’ve been aiming for one more layer than we are wearing but atm my DS lives in a vest and sleepsuit with a cardigan if we go outside. Our house is quite warm and usually he has a cellular blanket over his legs or is swaddled in a thin muslin at night.

@Aprilpudding24 That's good to know, DS has put on about 5lb in his first two weeks but he was tiny in the first place (5lb 13) so we were encouraged to feed more! We are also mostly bottle feeding. I’m seeing the health visitor tomorrow so will ask them. I would love to drop a night feed!

Mrsttcno1 · 06/05/2024 19:44

@94kj Do you have a temp thing in the house so you can see how warm/cold it is? I have baby in a vest & baby grow through the day, at night it’s vest, baby grow & her sleeping bag (1 tog). I tend to just play it by ear, if I’m feeling chilly she probably is too so I add a blanket, if I’m hot then she probably is too so I take the blanket away. X

Amf2508 · 06/05/2024 21:18

My son seems to run so hot, he's been in just a short sleeved vest and trouser combo most of the day and then in the evening I add a sleep suit instead of trousers and a blanket as he was too hot in his sleeping bag 😩

Ttcmumma · 06/05/2024 21:19

@Pinkstuffs I was told to wake my son for his feeds in 2018, it ruined his sleep completely. He went from a wonderful sleeper to waking every 20 minutes. He also never ate if I woke him anyway so never gained the feeds, just the drama of being up screaming! He also then never slept through the night until he was 4. So with my daughter I never ever wake her for feeds. She feeds on demand and however much she wants. She sometimes wakes me every 2 hours for feeds but most nights she goes 3-4 hours between feeds and stays in her next to me crib the entire time. She's gaining weight super fast. She was born at 7lb 11 and is now over 8lb 12 at 3 weeks old.

@94kj they usually say one extra layer to what you're wearing. ATM mine sleeps in a vest, baby grow, thin grow bag and thin blanket. In the day we are mostly indoors so a vest and baby grow/outfit. If we are outside I add a hat, cardigan and blanket x

ASGIRC · 06/05/2024 21:32

@Pinkstuffs I stopped waking her once she gained back her weight.
She is also almost 7 weeks old. I now never wake her at all, unless we have to go somewhere

Amf2508 · 06/05/2024 21:40

@Pinkstuffs my son had jaundice when he was born, he fed every 2.5 hours in the day but would go up to 4 hours at night almost straight away. I asked health visitor and because he was gaining weight (was 7lb15oz at birth and 8lb 10 oz at 2 weeks then 9lb 7oz at 3 weeks) she was more than happy for him to go that long even with the jaundice still slightly there. Hopefully if your little one is gaining nicely they will be happy for you to stop waking!

sugarplum33 · 07/05/2024 02:17

@Pinkstuffs DS has been struggling to put on weight and still isn't back to birth weight so we have to do 3 hourly wakes but the midwife said we can stop doing this once he's gaining well, has got rid of his jaundice and is waking himself up to feed. I certainly won't be setting alarms any longer than I need to!

ControlShiftDelete · 07/05/2024 11:21

My midwife told me the same as dd has jaundice to wake her up and feed and she is now 3 weeks old and has prolonged jaundice but at the same time the mw she said as long as she has min 8 feeds within 24 hours all is fine. During the day I feed her as much as I can and then when she finally settles, I don't wake her up. I still set my alarm clock 4 hours later though and wake her up but she is already making grunting noises and is about to self wake.

Pinkstuffs · 07/05/2024 15:30

Thanks everyone we saw the health visitor today and she said the same, as he’s above his birth weight it’s fine for us to drop a night feed although I suspect he’ll wake up anyway.

MumDaisy1980 · 08/05/2024 22:57

Hello everyone, been breastfeeding exclusively, got given an electric pump , thinking would be good idea to expresses milk so DH can help with some feeding and I can catch some sleep as he is now return to work.

though, wonder how to even start it?! As in if I am expressing same time as feeding the baby (to mimic demand) , then when to feed the baby?!

and we found all the sterilising such a hassle. Overall , we keen to prepare it but concern of affecting the supply. Wonder would one of those breastfeeding cafe held locally might be best place to go and ask about the expressing , storing the milk etc.

tbanks!

Applesandpears23 · 08/05/2024 23:19

The main thing to realise is your milk production is currently exactly what your baby drinks each day. If you start pumping you need to avoid big changes so don’t express 200mls one day and nothing the rest or you’ll get mastitis the day you don’t express. Usual advice is to express from one breast whilst feeding from the other if your baby generally only takes one breast at each feed or express after feeding. Then whichever day baby has the expressed milk try to express the same amount that day to keep your supply consistent. Lots of women find it is a lot of hassle to express for a bottle especially if they end up doing all the cleaning and sterilising. When I need a rest I feed lying down and have my partner do all the burping/nappies/bouncing. Ie Mum literally just breastfeeds and nothing else. That way it is easy to get back to sleep.

BVIre · 09/05/2024 06:08

@MumDaisy1980 i have started pumping after babies first too morning feeds (usually around 6-7am & then again 9am-10am -ish)! Pumping after both feeds usually gets me one bottle for my hubby to do an evening feed so I normally feed our baby around 10-11pm ish and go to bed and then hubby does bottle at 1-2ish and then I’m not back up again until the feed after! Don’t know if that’s the recommended way but works for us! The bottle we use is the mam bottle and I find it’s self-steralising so it’s really easy, just pop it in the microwave after washing for a few mins! Our baby is nearly 4 weeks and we’ve been doing this routine since he was 10 days and it works well for us! I would’ve given up on the breastfeeding by now without those extra few hours in the pm!

sugarplum33 · 09/05/2024 07:36

@BVIre We do similar to you, I pump what I can during the day after feeds and then I go to bed super early and my husband feeds a bottle of expressed milk at about 11pm and settles baby for the night before bringing him up. Our daughter is up from around 6 so he sorts out the kids last thing and first thing and gets about 6 hours solid sleep in the middle and I'm in bed for about 10-12 hours getting little chunks. Survival mode! 🤣

Out of curiosity how much milk are you finding you can pump? I know it's not necessarily an indication of supply but with our issues with weight gain I'm just hyper fixated on how much milk baby is getting. I'm finding I can get around 2 ounces per 20 minute pump at the moment.

Emilyj13 · 09/05/2024 11:37

Hi everyone,
A little support needed for a first time mum who is exhausted.
My little boy is 4 weeks old tomorrow, he is fed on formula but will not be winded, we have tried every position and many people have also tried and he will have an occasional burp but most the time nothing.
In the day he is very chilled, quite alert for half the day I would say but otherwise settles in his Moses basked.
At night he has 2 and half hours sleep the whole night. Last night he slept 11 - 12:30 and 4 - 5.
He is crying/screaming and kicking his legs in the air so I am assuming trapped wind or is this normal sleeping times for a 4 week old?

any other experience similar or any advice would be greatly appreciated as I can’t have many more nights of just a couple of hours :(

sugarplum33 · 09/05/2024 13:13

@Emilyj13 It does sound like a very long awake time and perhaps that he's uncomfortable. It definitely sounds unsustainable for you though!

What formula are you using and have you tried changing this? Some brands may be more suited to his sensitive tum than others. We used Hipp successfully with my daughter and I've heard great things about Kendamil which is what we've used this time for top ups. Also have you tried things like infacol or Colief to help with his digestion?

Emilyj13 · 09/05/2024 13:24

@sugarplum33 thank you for responding. We are using HIPP and after googling that is a good one for colic or reflux. We also use Infacol every feed.
I don’t really know what else we can try
