@SantasRubiksCube Thank you so much for saying out loud what it turns out loads of us have been thinking on our own.

Since the start of always kept saying, “of course it’s still early days” whenever I talk about it with anyone, but over the last few days the full on anxiety of “what if I get to the scan and my baby isn’t ok?” has really taken over. I woke my husband up in the middle of the night last night in floods of tears over it. I have been incredibly stressed generally over the last few days, now signed off work with stress (and vomiting) because when I went to the GP about my sickness my blood pressure cleared 240. Now that anxiety is creating more anxiety - I am worried about the baby, so my blood pressure has increased, so I’m scared that’ll harm the baby, so I worry about the baby more, and my blood pressure goes up again. It’s a vicious cycle and for the first time this morning I sat down with my husband and made a wellbeing plan to help me to try to relax. I’m going to get back to the gym (just swimming), get out of the house every day even if it’s just a walk to shops and back, when I lie down for a nap I’ll put spa music on, I’m going to set myself a little project to pull the winter weeds up from the garden now we’re getting to Spring.

I know none of us want to voice the darkest fears we have - I didn’t even want to say the ultimate “what if” out loud to my husband in case I jinxed it - but in a way it is comforting to know that we all have some level of feeling the same.

I really value this community - I don’t know how mothers in previous generations coped on their own!

I couldn't have said it better @Lillers . I think your post @SantasRubiksCube struck a chord with most of us and it just shows that you're not the only one feeling the way you are. Pregnancy is such a precious but fragile thing and it's hard not to overthink things. Hope everyone has a lovely weekend 🥰

Another boy! Just had my NIPT results through (Illumina - done at 6pm on Monday and results came through this morning). Thankfully all super low risk at less than 1 in 10,000 chance.

Now the struggle with boy names begins haha! My DH is a primary school teacher and so far has dismissed every boy name due to having taught a naughty one of those haha. But he had a whole list of girl names he liked!

Lillers · 09/03/2024 10:01

I still don’t have a date through for my dating scan (they emailed to say they’ve received the referral and will text me my appointment) but to make me feel more in control I’ve bitten the bullet and booked a private scan for Wednesday when I’ll be 11+6. I’ve only paid the deposit so if my NHS date comes through before then I’ll cancel - I just really need to know that there really is a baby in there!

I know there’s guidance about not having scans too close together, but if I don’t have an appointment date by Wednesday, I can’t foresee the appointment being that close 🤷‍♀️

Xur · 09/03/2024 10:15

@Lillers the advice on not having scans is bull….
its just kitchen talk, there’s literally stuff out there that harms babies way more…there’s mothers who smoke, drink, do drugs, are exposed to chemicals in their job, undergo huge stress, travel a lot of work accross timezones. I’m fairly certain an ultrasound scan or two is not harmful. If they would, then they wouldn’t be scanning high risk babies often.

Lillers · 09/03/2024 10:20

@Xur Agreed, which is why I’m not worried about going ahead with a private scan. If the NHS get funny about it then I’ll just say I wouldn’t have had to do it they’d been better at communicating with me!

rupertbear91 · 09/03/2024 10:21

@RosiePH I'm in the same position with DH being a teacher but he works in an all girls school and there isn't a single name I have suggested that doesn't remind him of a badly behaved student 😂 so god help us if we have a girl 🤦🏽‍♀️

Xur · 09/03/2024 10:43

@rupertbear91 @RosiePH you know you can can try dip into international names! Or really old names.
I know I’ll be taking an old Latvian name that’s rooted into my language if it’s a girl and a strong male name from Folklore if it’s a boy.

Congrats on all the scans and great NIPT results!

I’m starting my second trimester today 🎉 I managed to convince myself that I’m now full of energy, so I got up early today to do a 5k 😅 Trying to get more active and healthy now.

rupertbear91 · 09/03/2024 10:57

@Xur I love an international name my grandad was Austrian and my gran Irish but he is still very opinionated 😂 I have curbed the conversation until we find out the gender at 16 weeks then he's going to have to open his mind a bit more 🤦🏽‍♀️ it's made to think it's only 4 weeks away!

HRP1990 · 09/03/2024 11:01

Just to put it out there, I love a unisex name that can work for both boys or girls!

Totally agree re names reminding you of someone you know/went to school with etc, we ruled out a lot of names the first time around for this reason lol

Cat2022 · 09/03/2024 11:35

Hi everyone! Sorry been quiet but had my daughter’s first birthday yesterday and my first week back at work. I just checked badger and my screening results are already there. The syndromes all say low but the values seem not very big compared to last time. They have also said I have low Papp-A which I don’t know what that means as I probably won’t hear from them for another few weeks about it maybe at my 16 week appt.

Cat2022 · 09/03/2024 11:40

I’m thinking I might book in for an NIPT just to put my mind at rest as don’t want to be anxious the full time about it and with a small age gap just want to be prepared.

luckyfaith · 09/03/2024 11:41

We're going to struggle with boys names. We spent about an hour last night going through names and didn't agree on one. 😩 I definitely find it easier choosing girls names for some reason.

MudandMoet · 09/03/2024 11:50

@Xur @rupertbear91 @RosiePH @HRP1990 oooh I can't wait to hear these names as the babies arrive August/September time!! Tbh for me the boy name was chosen as he'd have been named after DH due to tradition which I didn't mind at all. Now we know it's a girl, it's my call (though will have DH nans name as middle name) I have a sterling name chosen and I've always wanted this but I'm not sure DH will go for it. Failing that I've had a little list building for a while so he's got around 6 to choose from. I like earthy natural names.

@Cinai I was expecting the burst of energy at the second trimester too but it's not arrived for me yet 🤦🏼‍♀️ way to go on the 5k

@Cat2022 I think @Xur is familiar with this and be along soon to advise x

Happy birthday to your little girl! 🎂 You will hopefully hear from the hospital regarding low Papp-a and will likely be closely monitored for any growth restriction as that's what low Papp-a is linked to. I was also prescribed low dose of aspirin from 12 weeks when I had low Papp-a in my last pregnancy.

Lillers · 09/03/2024 12:11

We’re oddballs that have had our names picked out since before we even started ttc 😂. We hadn’t settled on middle names and were going to do that when we know sex, but then dh told me he’d really like his grandad’s name as a middle name if it’s a boy, and suggested my mum’s name as a middle name for a girl, and they both go perfectly with the names we love, so that’s all decided!

SC126 · 09/03/2024 12:23

@MudandMoet i like earthy natural sort of names too. My son is called Rowan and I love it. Struggling this time though as me and the husband don’t agree on anything so far. Girl or boy 🤦‍♀️😳

Kate543 · 09/03/2024 12:29

Pleased for everyone getting their nipt results :)

tryingfortwo2 · 09/03/2024 12:41

@SantasRubiksCube I feel the exact same, and it looks like most of us do. Lots of love to everyone struggling with the “what ifs”. I can’t wait until I can feel baby move every day.

Going at 3pm today to hopefully find out if we’re adding to this big boy gang, or bumping up the numbers for the girls!

Ptfcangel · 09/03/2024 14:16

Can I ask about the NIPT?
Ive really only heard of it on here hadn’t spoken to mw about it or anything.
is this something you pay for privately? Is it just for gender or for other screenings?

Cinai · 09/03/2024 14:23

You can do it privately, or you’ll get it on the NHS if your 12 weeks Nuchal scan comes back as high risk. I went straight for a private scan/NIPT at 11 weeks because I think my Nuchal scan would have come back as high risk due to my age alone and I figured there’s no point in getting a high risk result and spending the next two weeks worrying.

Okay thanks.
i have my 12 scan on Thursday so shall see after that! I’m 27 so probably wont worry too much til I need to then 🙈

Xur · 09/03/2024 15:23

@Cat2022
Papp-a is a hormone that is produced by the placenta. If it’s on the lower end (I have it low aswell), that means the placenta might not be working as good as it should. Generally a good level of Papp—a is more than 0,4..0,5.
mine was 0,34.
Now there is nothing that we can eat or drink or do that will improve the number of the hormone, but as mentioned before, you are likely going to be put on aspirin. I take 150mg daily and I have to do so until the end of the pregnancy. 150mg is half the dose of the regular aspirin tablet we take for headache.
what it does is that it makes your body to pump more blood through the placenta, to compensate for the placenta potentially not working well enough.
In terms of practical risks low Papp-a is associated with premature birth, low birth weight, slower growth (small babies), still birth, increased blood pressure in the pregnancy (preeclampsia).
How ever, the risk of still birth and premature birth is so low and so uncommon that NHS doesn’t even put it on the booklet.
Normally with low Papp-a expectant mothers are allocated a consultant along with the midwife, however, the consultant doesn’t get involved until after 20 weeks because after 20 weeks is when they have a median chart for baby size, and how fast they grow. You will also be offered more scans to monitor the growth of the baby. Low Papp-a ladies are often offered an induction or a C section earlier than original due date. That is very often a decision along if the mother develops the high blood pressure. Pretty much all of low Papp-a cases proceed as normal with no issues and turns out this is more common than people think.

Cat2022 · 09/03/2024 15:35

@Xur Thank you so much for summarising it all for me as you know the internet gives a lot of info on the matter. The slight irony for me being they had me down as risk of baby being too big due to my daughter so now it’s the opposite and I also gave birth at 42 weeks so it’s going to be a very different pregnancy. I think my levels were 0.36 so similar to you.

I seen the low Papp-a results will be the main reason my odds of the T18 are higher than before (although still low chance) so I suppose there may be no point in doing a NIPT.

Xur · 09/03/2024 15:40

@Cat2022 our range is the so called gray area. As in it’s not dramatically low and very often nothing happens with this. As in it causes no effect to the progress of the baby.
I read another thread from years ago it said that apparently one doctor once disclosed to a patient informally that doctors don’t worry too much unless the Papp-a is less than 0,2.
