I noticed the other thread was full and have started a new one.

Lovely to hear of everyone’s 20 week scans. Thanks to those of you who gave me a list of baby essentials, very helpful!

Hope you’re all doing well!

@AimeeLou84 completely agree! I find it hard to distinguish between if baby isn’t moving, or I’ve just been busy and haven’t taken notice. And then I convince myself the kicks don’t feel as strong as they did before.

ExpectantEs · 09/05/2024 16:22

I actually went in on Monday for reduced movements as well as I was worried. I also had food poisoning or a bug so I thought it affected the baby. Little girl started kicking up a storm as soon as I lied down to be monitored. I would say go in as many times as you need to.

Life update:
I had my baby shower on Saturday (which I think I got food poisoning from the restaurant) which was lovely!! One of the best celebrations I've ever had.

Which leads to my question - in regards to baby clothes/blankets. Do you HAVE to wash everything before the baby wears them? My midwife, sisters, mum, uncles said I shouldn't bother. But new mum friends and other pregnant friends are all washing and ironing everything before baby comes.

I quite like the feeling of new clothes and sometimes the washing machine makes things feel 'worn' already.

bringmearainbow · 09/05/2024 16:23

@ExpectantEs sorry you had food poisoning that sucks 😩 With my first I washed everything but this time round I haven't bothered

Savvy21 · 09/05/2024 16:26

@ExpectantEs I washed everything for my first but I think I was looking for something to do haha. I will need to do some washing though as I've had quite a lot second hand.

bringmearainbow · 09/05/2024 16:27

@ExpectantEs I will say I have rewashed everything from my first as it was in the loft

Morningcoffeeaddict · 09/05/2024 16:36

@Yummum19 - hope you’re doing ok and little one too! My son was born on the 9th centile and wavered between 2nd and 9th for about the first two years of his life - he was born early but more because of my preeclampsia than his size. My consultant says they’re more concerned about them tracking on their curve if the placenta looks healthy (and once they’re born) as some people / babies are just small but not necessarily a sign of something wrong so if baby continues growing over a series of scans and HR / placenta / baby’s organs all seem healthy then they won’t necessarily deliver early.

Morningcoffeeaddict · 09/05/2024 16:38

@ExpectantEs - I make sure I wash everything if it’s secondhand (even if I know and trust the house it’s come from) but with new things I think I washed everything before DS was born and then anything new I bought after just went straight on him to be honest. If the midwife says it’s fine I think it’s probably ok?

Sophie3003 · 09/05/2024 16:41

@ExpectantEs I washed everything last time, again because I was told to/what you are supposed to do. All of my stuff is in vacuum bags (which my mum thinks I need to get down) which mum said to wash. Not sure how useful it will be with a July baby/neutral and only from new born when my daughter (7lb) needed tiny baby!

ExpectantEs · 09/05/2024 16:42

Thanks guys, I don't have any second hand stuff. I mainly did my shopping at John Lewis and George asda as they were doing sales. All from online so I know they haven't been on a shop floor and most were wrapped in plastic.

I think I might just wash the vests and leave the rest :) laundry isn't my favourite chore lol

Nocoffeenotalkie · 09/05/2024 16:46

@Yummum19 my first daughter was apparently affected by that so I am being closely monitored this pregnancy for IUGR as they marked her pregnancy as being an IUGR one. We had growth scans for her but they said she was on 50th centile at the time. We expected at 8lb when she was overdue. She was 6lb8 at birth born at 41wks+3 (so not tiny). She was always 75th centile for height and between 25th and 50th for weight and has remained that way as a 5ft5 11 year old. You will have more scans and monitoring which can be reassuring.

@AimeeLou84 my IUGR scans for this pregnancy are now monitoring the other way because this little girl is apparently 99th centile! Had gestational diabetes test today and have a horrendous headache (sugar hangover 🤷‍♀️) I guess we wait and see if she is big due to GD or just big.

I do find the extra scans positive though. Not sure how I'd manage with just a 12wk and 20wk one. I had growth scans for both pregnancies so have never experienced that.

Sophie3003 · 09/05/2024 16:48

All I have my 28 week appointment tomorrow (at 29+1). Looking forward to seeing the midwife but not the blood test followed by anti-d. One of my daughter's godmothers says it is fine but my other midwife said it is horrendous 😬.

wannabe123 · 09/05/2024 17:17

I had my 28 week appointment yesterday. Baby seems to be measuring on their curve at about 60-70th percentile. I have a growth scan next week due to my first being born on the 97th so we will see how accurate the fundal measurements are! They also took some blood to check my iron levels as my pulse has been getting really high in the morning. I said I don't feel excessively tired but then I've got a toddler and I'm a teacher so tired just seems to be my norm anyway! Oh and also, baby is currently breech 😫

Hope everything goes well for those waiting on growth scans x

Sophie3003 · 09/05/2024 17:19

I have a massive bump so am interested to see what they say when they take my first measurement tomorrow! I wonder if baby has moved from head down (as so much space/room to move at the moment!). They say not to worry before 36 weeks but then I think we are hyper aware aren't we @wannabe123 what with a previous breech, as I never gave it a thought last time!

AnonymousXXIX · 09/05/2024 18:18

@ExpectantEs I always wash everything new; baby clothes, my clothes, all clothes. But this is super personal and possibly also cultural? Because my DH was surprised. My mum was almost religious about drilling this into me as I was growing up, because you don't know who's handled the item and what processes were used to produce it. And in case of baby, also in order to use a sensitive skin detergent to ensure no unknown chemicals or whatever can come in touch with their skin.

Bali200 · 09/05/2024 18:27

@ExpectantEs I work in the fashion industry so have a lot of knowledge of factories/clothing production, I am 100% going to be washing all the clothes 😬😬😬

Lisao86 · 09/05/2024 19:38

@Sophie3003 i had my anti-d a couple of weeks ago and was dreading it as my midwife had also said it’s bad. But honestly, it was only a tiny bit worse than any other injection. And I’m not a fan of needles! It went in and I was waiting for something horrendous, but it didn’t happen! I had a sore arm for days after the whooping cough vaccine, but no side effects from the anti-d.

The midwife that administered it said it was naughty of my midwife to be telling people how bad it is…

Sophie3003 · 09/05/2024 20:01

@Lisao86 thank you, before I knew I had to have it, as my daughter is negative so didn't need it last time, my midwife said 'let's hope you don't need it as it's horrendous' with a concerned face!

BananaHammock23 · 09/05/2024 21:13

Has anyone else got really painful swollen ankles and feet in this freak heat? I'm 32 weeks tomorrow and feel like I don't know how I'm going to make it through another 8 weeks!

ExpectantEs · 09/05/2024 22:06

@AnonymousXXIX but clothes never feel 'new' anymore after you wash them! If you do this every time you buy new clothes, what's your laundry routine? Like what detergent/softeners do you use lol i'm curious

@Bali200 Okay you've officially convinced me, I'm going to wash them

My friend also ironed every single item. It sounds like a very big task

Jess725 · 09/05/2024 22:56

Also an ex fashion buyer here and will deffo be washing everything 😬

another vote to say anti d is only a tiny bit worse than a normal jab. It’s over in seconds too ❤️ you’ve got this!

Lisao86 · 10/05/2024 06:26

@BananaHammock23 yes to the swollen feet! Also 32 weeks tomorrow and yesterday was the first time I’ve seen them so swollen - my toes were like fat sausages 🤣 painful to stand on too.

Oatmilktea · 10/05/2024 12:49

How is everyone getting on? I think I will wash baby’s clothes before arrival too.

It’s been discovered today that as well as placenta previa I also have vasa previa. Due to the risks, I’ll be admitted at 32 weeks until delivery. I’m 30 weeks today. I know it’s absolutely the best place for me and baby but I’m so sad that I’ll be in hospital for weeks on end and will miss my partner and dog terribly 😢

@Oatmilktea
Oh wow really, I have never heard of such a thing being in hospital for so long. Really feel for you. You are so right, the best place for you but I honestly sympathise so so much being without your pup!! My dog is my life, I am such a millennial 😆 sending good thoughts your way and we are all here for lending an ear x

Oatmilktea · 10/05/2024 14:20

Thanks so much for your well wishes @Jess725. Currently cuddling him in bed, sobbing in to his fur 😂 such a crazy dog lady!

Bless you @Oatmilktea it's really good you will be monitored but as you say such a long time to be admitted for.

Just back from my midwife appointment, anti-d all fine (just hoping I don't get a bad arm!) but surprise surprise I am measuring big (just over the 90th centile!) so have to go for a scan.
