Had to cancel honeymoon - pregnant

Noddy89 · 11/01/2024 18:12

We found out we are expecting a week ago. We were due to go on honeymoon next week to Kenya and we had to cancel. I’m so excited about the news but my partner is just giving out about loosing all of the money. I don’t care about the money I just want a healthy happy baby. I’ve tried to talk to him about it but he keeps saying how cross he is about loosing the money - making me feel like it’s my fault. Any advise?

Blimey, England doesn't just have English people in it you know.

Plenty others do use the word gotten. Educate yourself before coming out with utter nonsense.

It's the 'loosing' for 'losing' that makes me wince.

JengaNonConfirming · 12/01/2024 12:49

Congratulations on the pregnancy and have a wonderful time in Zanzibar. We went there for our honeymoon and it is beautiful 😍

shreknjumps · 12/01/2024 12:50

"I know that but my point is - I wouldn’t have gotten anything back in this specific scenario anyway - not in England - but maybe differs from country to country??"

You would if your doctor advised you not to travel. Fuck me OP, wise up

Sureaseggs44 · 12/01/2024 12:57

Normally you would not be able to claim if you found out you were pregnant because most places are safe to travel to especially in the first trimester . However if you were Ill for any reason stopping you from travelling and had confirmation from your doctor you could claim . You should always take out travel insurance when you book. Always .

Well if the Dr said no then will your travel insurance not pay out?

I would enquire about a not fit to fly letter from the doctor and speak to your insurance.

Daisies12 · 12/01/2024 13:19

He does know he was involved in the pregnancy?! Sorry but if I had a honeymoon booked to Kenya I would be using contraception.... but you should be able to claim on insurance if Dr tells you not to go. The risk is incredibly low though.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 12/01/2024 13:21

Have you booked Vaccinations?

Also used in Ireland and I believe Scotland and parts of England.

Not everyone living in England is English.

Additionally, gotten was used in the Middle Ages in England, ergo prior to it being used in America. Eg ill gotten gains.

SassyPants87 · 12/01/2024 13:33

Why did you cancel? I went to India when I was a few weeks pregnant

SlightlyJaded · 12/01/2024 13:42

We did Tanzania and Zanzibar for our honeymoon, and it was amazing. Tanzania is a lower risk than Kenya (which is already fairly low) and pretty much a non-existent risk. Can you switch to Tanzania so that you get the safari experience as well?

Why are people from England saying "gotten"? That's USA English.

I hate it but MN loves gotten. And you’ll be told it’s old English, as in “ill gotten gains”. Of course all the people now who say “gotten” read a lot of Chaucer and so on. Nothing to do with American programmes on Netflix, oh no, of course not!

I don't understand the hate, but regardless of it being Old English (and thus not an Americanism) it has always been used in Ireland and in some parts of the UK. Not everyone on MN grew up in the same time and place you did, some of us have been using the word all our lives. Your post is pretty narrow minded.

saraclara · 12/01/2024 13:52

You have completely understood the pregnancy exclusion element of travel insurance. Of course pregnant women are covered by insurance (up until the very last weeks). What they don't cover is you deciding not to go because of your pregnancy. You are now going to Zanzibar so you need travel insurance cover. Which will include cover for any pregnancy related emergency.

Many thousands of pregnant women travel abroad on holiday with travel insurance. Get yourself covered now.

I’ve been on MN for nearly 20 years and only started to see the word gotten being used in the last few years. I don’t dispute that some parts of the UK have used the word for ever, but the vast majority of people who use it now are plain English people, who have started saying it because it’s become cool and trendy. I’d stake my life on that fact. And you know it’s true, you’re just being argumentative for the age of it!

Genuinely have no idea. It's as normal as "the" to me, so no I haven't noticed any trends. It really really surprised and puzzled me the first time I saw the hatred of it discussed on here.

It could of course be that because it irritates you, you have noticed it more and more over the years, in a confirmation bias sort of way.

The idea of such a boring, everyday word being cool and trendy is quite amusing though!

Anyway, should stop derailing the thread - OP, too late for Kenya now, but FFS get travel insurance today for the rest of the trip!

whynotwhatknot · 12/01/2024 13:58

is that what hes worried about money-good luck

check your insurance again it has to cover pregnancy or you cant go anywere really incase of an emergency whilst your there

I'm somewhat Confused at anyone thinking the word gotten is 'cool and trendy'.

A more boring word I could not envisage.

WhichEllie · 12/01/2024 14:15

I’m British and I use both. Probably because I currently live in the US and hear both. I particularly like the sound of “What’s gotten into you?” for some reason.

Anyway, enjoy Zanzibar OP! I personally think it’s better not to take the risk.

Clemfandango95 · 12/01/2024 14:17

I went to Mexico 7 months pregnant on honeymoon (booked before pregnancy, same situation) and tbh it was lovely

MumToBe1980 · 12/01/2024 14:32

Have you spoken with your tour operator, we cancelled a trip to the Maldives due to zika, we booked with kuoni and they were fantastic and provided us with a full refund.

marcopront · 12/01/2024 14:50

Why is Kenya a zika risk and Zanzibar isn't?

If this relies on government reporting of risks don't trust it. Tanzania ignored covid for example and stopped reporting cases after a couple of months - and were reporting accurately even then.

Justia · 12/01/2024 14:51

Glad you got sorted in the end and aren’t massively out of pocket.

Regards insurance, some will cover you, some won’t, usually you would get a refund or be able to rearrange your trip if booking through a travel agent.

But, and this is crucial, that would depend on it being a recent outbreak, unbeknownst to you before you booked the trip.

If you knowingly are pregnant or attempt to get pregnant while you have booked a trip to a known zika zone then you are unlikely to get any help because you had the knowledge (or ability to research the country you are going to, as most would when pregnant/contemplating pregnancy).

You should have kept with the birth control until after the trip.

Agree re Africa, many countries don’t have the healthcare capacity and infrastructure for accurate reporting.

adriftinadenofvipers · 12/01/2024 15:14

Why do people do these things??!

No 1, why weren't you using contraception when you knew you were going on honeymoon? That's on both of you. Let him rant. It was his penis.

No 2, why the hell would you not have travel insurance on such an expensive holiday?!!

ClairDeLaLune · 12/01/2024 15:37

Very doubtful that any travel insurance would cover cancellation due to pregnancy. That’s a thing you (normally!) have some control over, so it’s open to selection.

But OP you are a silly billy not having travel insurance! Especially somewhere like Africa, anything could go wrong!
