Had to cancel honeymoon - pregnant

We found out we are expecting a week ago. We were due to go on honeymoon next week to Kenya and we had to cancel. I’m so excited about the news but my partner is just giving out about loosing all of the money. I don’t care about the money I just want a healthy happy baby. I’ve tried to talk to him about it but he keeps saying how cross he is about loosing the money - making me feel like it’s my fault. Any advise?

You also shouldn’t go to a zika country if you are planning to TTC within 3 months of returning. You are super lucky that didn’t happen.

I know that but my point is - I wouldn’t have gotten anything back in this specific scenario anyway - not in England - but maybe differs from country to country??

I'm in England and my policies have often covered pregnancy.

But I'd put money on that yours doesn't allow cancellation just because you are pregnant, but would accept cancellations on medical advice due to pregnancy, and therefore you'd be covered.

The fly in the ointment may be that Kenya isn't actually at risk for Zika.

I'd assume they weren't married yet if they are talking about a honeymoon!
We can all make mistakes but honestly anyone about to become a parent needs to be more responsible than this. The sheer cost of a holiday to Africa and not adding travel insurance? Either immature or reckless.
And the dp huffing and puffing about it...

She said it's next week so assume they are married and just having a slightly delayed honeymoon

the rest i agree with. how you purchase an expensive, once in a lifetime, trip without insurance is beyond me. it's not like insurance is even that expensive. this just seems like madness to me? I don't cross the street without insurance (or sandwiches)

Yes but pregnancy not covered so genuinely curious here

Pregnancy is covered until around 32 weeks. Anything over and you could feasibly go into labour in another country and expect travel insurance to pay out.

In England too and never have had any trouble getting travel insurance travelling up until 32 weeks.

I think you are seriously misunderstanding something and this could be very costly if you go to bloody Zanzibar with no insurance. It’s so irresponsible.

Phone up admiral or another big company and actually speak to a person.

bobomomo · 12/01/2024 10:34

Pregnancy is automatically covered in England as long as your dr / midwife says you are fit to go, it's also covered if a health care professional says you cannot travel. What isn't included is routine pregnancy related appointments or delivery at term (typically after 34 weeks they won't cover you).

Please do buy insurance because you need it for emergencies anyway

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 12/01/2024 10:36

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t have travel insurance incase you got hurt abroad and needed medical care or repatriation.

You didn’t know you were pregnant when you should have taken it out.

RaisingAnOnlyChild · 12/01/2024 10:43

Get a second opinion as Kenya isn't showing as having Zika. They do have yellow fever though so you need a vaccine and maleria tablets which aren't the nicest! Zanzibar is incredible. Such beautiful beaches! So you will have a fab time what ever you do

Pregnancy aside, were you actually planning to go to Kenya and Zanzibar without travel insurance??!!! What did you think would happen if you broke your leg the week before the trip, or became ill while you were away, or if your bag was stolen, or your luggage was lost…the list is endless.

I assume you’re both young, probably healthy, so travel insurance would have been incredibly cheap.

travelallthetime · 12/01/2024 10:55

My customers (im a travel agent) had to cancel because of Zika, their insurance paid out.

I totally get why you cancelled, I cant believe some people are saying they would still have gone!

HoppingPavlova · 12/01/2024 10:57

As I can’t take antimalarials (allergy), I always mozzie proof myself way over the top when travelling to places with these issues and have never had a problem.

travelallthetime · 12/01/2024 10:58

Hi all - wondering if travel insurance is different where I live as pregnancy is not covered as “pregnancy and normal childbirth are not seen as a medical emergency”. Just curious does this change from place to place then?

This is your specific insurance companies. I have had two customers cancel due to pregnancy and both got their money back. Both live in England

BusyMummyWrites01 · 12/01/2024 11:03

If your GP advises you that you should not go on the holiday, they can give you a letter and you can claim back on insurance. If you’ve unilaterally decided not to go, I’d have to ask why, as a GP may say it’s totally fine. Lots of women get pregnant and deliver healthy babies in Kenya. You just need to advise the hotel and make sure to avoid uncooked foods (which is the usual advice anyway, even if you are not pregnant).

SparklyOwls · 12/01/2024 11:14

Why are people from England saying "gotten"? That's USA English.

megletthesecond · 12/01/2024 11:23

"Don't have travel insurance".
That level of risk taking and lack of organisation will be stopping once you are parents.....

novhange · 12/01/2024 11:25

Noddy89 · 11/01/2024 21:10

Update: the second leg of our trip was meant to be to Zanzibar which doc says is fine so we will do that and just slip Kenya - so still get a holiday at least!!!

How is that an update? Presumably you already knew you were going to Zanzibar?

This has to rank as one of the most pointless MN threads ever.

England - my policy said not covered even if you have the highest price one

No it means you don't have to pay extra for pregnancy not it's not covered!

Noddy89 · 12/01/2024 09:02

England - my policy said not covered even if you have the highest price one

But you just said you “don’t have travel insurance unfortunately” so what do you mean by “my policy”? Do you have travel insurance or not?? This thread is batshit on many levels…

Robott · 12/01/2024 11:37

I hope you and your husband develop a bit more common sense over the next 9 months. Travelling anywhere abroad without travel insurance ( let alone one with a many potentially deadly diseases) is very stupid.
Travel insurance should be made compulsory when going abroad. Have you any idea how expensive it is to get medical treatment should you need it. Is this the first time you’ve left the country?
I hope you’ve had the necessary vaccinations as well?
Go and familiarise yourself with the government website on travel guidelines for the countries you’re visiting- some parts of Kenya have some travel restrictions currently. Get the most comprehensive insurance you can afford and enjoy your holiday with peace of mind.

Also used in Ireland and I believe Scotland and parts of England.

Not everyone living in England is English.

I think she’s cancelled because it’s a country with both malaria and zika, the consequences of which can be catastrophic for both the mother and the baby.

BUT, and it’s a big but here, I suspect you’ve paid a LOT of money for this. The big resorts (which I’m assuming you’re staying in) will be mosquito sprayed within an inch of their lives and you can still take anti-malarials when you’re pregnant.

you pays your money, you takes your choice. As you were (I assume) actively trying to get pregnant before a honeymoon you believe you can’t go on when you’re pregnant, you must have been prepared to take the risk and cancel.

can you change it to another destination with the same tour operator?

When VERY IGNORANT people talk about African countries as if these places are in some kind of jungle with NO humans.

Everyone knows to take anti-malarial tablets before travelling and that they don't affect pregnancy. As for Zika, I haven't heard of that being a current threat and I was in Kenya recently.

pontipinemum · 12/01/2024 12:11

Congrats on your pregnancy

Being pregnant and deciding you don't want to travel = not covered by insurance

Being pregnant and being advised by your doctor you cannot travel = covered

You should always get travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday in case you need to cancel/ change. Also as a few others have said it is so important in case you become sick or even die. I remember telling my gran at least I'd be repatriated if I died when backpacking my insurance was crap for things like stolen bags/ flight delays but good for medical

I hope you enjoy Zanzibar

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 12/01/2024 12:13

He's right, you're being ridiculous.

Please buy some travel insurance before you go!

For goodness sake it’s so irresponsible to go without. If I hadn’t spent £22 on post office travel insurance before I took my kids to Turkey. I’d have been stuck with a bill into the thousands of euros when the youngest slipped coming out the pool and broke his ankle. It was 450ish euros just to be seen by a doctor in the hospital and 70ish to have the hotel doctor look at him.

Blimey, England doesn't just have English people in it you know.

Plenty others do use the word gotten. Educate yourself before coming out with utter nonsense.
