Had to cancel honeymoon - pregnant

We found out we are expecting a week ago. We were due to go on honeymoon next week to Kenya and we had to cancel. I’m so excited about the news but my partner is just giving out about loosing all of the money. I don’t care about the money I just want a healthy happy baby. I’ve tried to talk to him about it but he keeps saying how cross he is about loosing the money - making me feel like it’s my fault. Any advise?

Hi all - wondering if travel insurance is different where I live as pregnancy is not covered as “pregnancy and normal childbirth are not seen as a medical emergency”. Just curious does this change from place to place then?

Zanzibar is lovely! I have been there you will love it :)

LoreleiG · 12/01/2024 08:54

You need travel insurance regardless of pregnancy.

Noddy89 · 12/01/2024 08:55

Thanks I’m really looking forward to it!

Travel insurance isn’t just for if you’re pregnant. It’s for if your doctor advises you not to travel for any reason. Some travel insurances cover if you have a bereavement in the immediate family and no longer want to travel. It covers you if your hotel goes bust but your airline is still flying. It covers if your plane is cancelled due to a number of reasons. It covers you if you break your ankle going down the stairs at the hotel or you get diarrhoea and vomiting bug/food poisoning.

As you are newly pregnant, you don’t need pregnancy cover you just need to check that any medical bills relating to a miscarriage (if you’re unlucky to suffer one) are covered.

Noddy89 · 12/01/2024 09:10

I know that but my point is - I wouldn’t have gotten anything back in this specific scenario anyway - not in England - but maybe differs from country to country??

I'm in England. have insurance with my bank account. Just went on a cruise at 7 weeks. they said pregnancy automatically covered as they can't discriminate which includes all pregnancy related emergencies

But it is not seen as a reason to cancel unless there's a medical reason you can't travel

You are misunderstanding. Pregnancy, in itself, is not covered by insurance as a reason to cancel.

Being medically advised not to travel, pregnant or not, is covered.

Your lack of knowledge is staggering (including about travel restrictions when pregnant).

Don’t have travel insurance unfortunately- will never make that mistake again! But only had to change outgoing flight

Right then he can't moan about the money that's lost. You would have lost a lot more if you'd needed medical help.

I'd ditch him tbh

So why won't your insurance cover it?

Probably as pregnancy is within someone's control and can be prevented (sexual assault aside) so will be in t&c

Congrats op just plan a delayed moon or mini moon somewhere else

catsnhats11 · 12/01/2024 09:24

Insurance should be booked the moment you book the holiday!! Regardless of where you are going or what your circumstances are. Google Martin Lewis holiday insurance if you don't understand why.

WandaWonder · 12/01/2024 09:30

So what do the pregnant women in Kenya do?

Pregnancy is not a reason by itself to not travel. However, your doctor told you not to travel to Kenya whilst pregnant. Having doctors advise would have covered the costs of the flight to Kenya and any accommodation there. Same as if you’d had a heart attack and your doctor advised you not to travel. Even if that travel was to France.

You would end your marriage because of a lack of travel insurance? That YOU could have arranged instead of expecting a man to do it for you.
Grow up.

forgotname · 12/01/2024 09:37

So you haven't had to cancel your honeymoon 🙄 you've had to make changes 🙄🙄🙄

Ladyj84 · 12/01/2024 09:43

Pregnancy not covered erm you need to check insurances I've been covered and abroad in all 4 of mine never a problem getting the correct insurance oh and im England

Quartz2208 · 12/01/2024 09:46

You do ha e travel insurance now right OP saying you are pregnant

and yes pregnancy in itself isn’t but your doctor told you not to travel so is covered

Wrongsideofpennines · 12/01/2024 09:55

Pregnancy Related issues are covered. We were due to travel in Europe when I was 10 weeks pregnant and couldn't because I had bleeding and EPU said no. We got full refunds as it was on medical advice not to travel. I actually ended up having another bleed the week we were due to be away so thank goodness we weren't abroad.

Please do not travel to East Africa without insurance unless you have £100k+ plus in your bank for medical emergencies and repatriation. What if you end up having an accident and in intensive care, how will that be paid for? Who will pay for the hotel for your husband to stay near you? Who will pay to get you home?
Honestly this is so unbelievably stupid, pregnancy or no pregnancy.

You'd divorce your new husband whilst a few weeks pregnant with your first child over this? Aye sure you would 🙄

I'd assume they weren't married yet if they are talking about a honeymoon!
We can all make mistakes but honestly anyone about to become a parent needs to be more responsible than this. The sheer cost of a holiday to Africa and not adding travel insurance? Either immature or reckless.
And the dp huffing and puffing about it...

It's one of the wildest I've seen in years. Or maybe I've blocked a lot of the batshittery out 😅
