Had to cancel honeymoon - pregnant

We found out we are expecting a week ago. We were due to go on honeymoon next week to Kenya and we had to cancel. I’m so excited about the news but my partner is just giving out about loosing all of the money. I don’t care about the money I just want a healthy happy baby. I’ve tried to talk to him about it but he keeps saying how cross he is about loosing the money - making me feel like it’s my fault. Any advise?

Can you not pay to change the location?

Had to cancel because Kenya is a Zika virus area so doctor said absolutely not 😭

Your insurance should cover this.

DavinaTheDonkey · 11/01/2024 19:47

Since you've had medical advice not to go, couldn't you claim on insurance and not lose all of the money? Or explain to the company you booked through and ask to change location?

romdowa · 11/01/2024 19:47

I'd be telling him to head off by himself if he's that annoyed.

Snoozymoozy · 11/01/2024 19:51

Who did you book through?
We were due to travel to Barbados a few years ago and found out I was pregnant. BA gave us a full refund! They just asked for proof of pregnancy then processed the refund with no hassle.

Changingplace · 11/01/2024 19:52

Talk to your insurance, if it’s on medical advice they should cover it - try speaking to your travel agent too, you may well be able to swap to a different destination.

Quartz2208 · 11/01/2024 19:55

Yes either it is fine and yiu go or You have a doctor note saying it isn’t safe and your insurance pays out

WonderingWanda · 11/01/2024 20:04

Presumably, you knew it was a Zika risk area when you booked the trip and decided to ttc, bit of a stupid mistake in my opinion. You should be able to claim on your insurance though or as others have said, pay to change the location.

Kenya is not at risk from zika virus https://www.gov.uk/guidance/zika-virus-country-specific-risk#atoz

Advice - tell him to get used to not putting himself first cos that's parenthood!
But seriously, if it is safe to go, just go.. or as others have said swap destinations. We found out I was pregnant a day before our honeymoon to Brazil.. I won't lie, I was a bit fragile with myself but wouldn't occur to me not to go.. enjoy a blissful break for the two if you whilst you can! Congrats

Gabby10 · 11/01/2024 20:47

Do you have insurance? If so you may well be covered if doctor has said you can't travel, you'll just need a letter from them to say so x

TheSquareMile · 11/01/2024 20:51

Which company did you take out travel insurance with?

When is the baby due?

It's a real shame that the holiday had to be cancelled; I hope that the insurers reimburse you and that you can go on another holiday.

bluebells1234 · 11/01/2024 20:56

This happened to me last year, travelling to Mexico. I cancelled flights with BA and as the dr had instructed it, they gave us a refund. And I contacted the hotel and they too offered a refund. You should be ok c

graceinc22 · 11/01/2024 20:56

@User69611 that guidance has now been withdrawn. The country page on https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/country/117/kenya#Other_Risks (which you are now directed to) highlights the risks of Zika in Kenya and travelling during pregnancy.

You are being redirected...

Update: the second leg of our trip was meant to be to Zanzibar which doc says is fine so we will do that and just slip Kenya - so still get a holiday at least!!!

Have you been charged to change your flights, or is that cost covered by the insurers?

Noddy89 · 11/01/2024 22:20

Don’t have travel insurance unfortunately- will never make that mistake again! But only had to change outgoing flight

You were planning to go to East Africa without travel insurance? You cannot be serious? Do you have any idea how much medical repatriation costs?

DragonFly98 · 11/01/2024 22:25

Why would you not book travel insurance as soon as you booked the holiday?

equinoxprocess · 11/01/2024 22:26

Do you have a spare hundred grand or two laying around to pay for medical costs or medical repatriation?

SparklyOwls · 11/01/2024 23:09

For love of god get some travel insurance!

booksandbrooks · 11/01/2024 23:22

This is probably the safest and cheapest way to learn you need travel insurance for this trip I'm a glad half full type so I'd call that a win.

Congratulations Flowers hope you have a wonderful trip.

Educationexpert · 11/01/2024 23:33

It’s very easy to protect yourself against mosquito bites if you’re careful. The risk isn’t high. I would have absolutely gone. I am pregnant now and travelling to a Zika country.

im actually of Kenyan heritage. Advice in Uk is always avoid simply due to being risk averse. However, a bit of research would make you more informed.

You booked a holiday to Kenya and didn’t factor in insurance?!

That’s absolutely mental.
