If your baby hiccoughed a lot in the womb…

… did they have reflux?

People say there’s a link but not much evidence about.

My 1st DS hiccuped a lot before he was born and had really bad reflux and colic.

I’m 33 weeks with my 2nd DS and have really been hoping for a happy, contented, non-refluxy baby this time but he also hiccups a lot. Every day for about 10 mins or so.

Please tell me it’s not a bad omen for reflux 🤦🏻‍♀️

Mine both did a lot it seemed (but don't know what's normal - it was multiple times a day!). Neither had reflux. One was a super easy baby and slept through early. The other wasn't as easy but cried uncontrollably - if she was being held or fed she was happy and slept reasonably well!

Porridgeislife · 07/12/2023 14:21

Yes she hiccoughed like mad and had reflux and a tongue tie.

loverrr · 07/12/2023 14:21

Mine didnt but she still gets hiccups alot now as a 4 year old!

Dyra · 07/12/2023 14:24

DC1: Hiccuped loads in utero. Zero reflux. Gets hiccups regularly still at the ages of 4.

DC2: Less hiccuping. Definite reflux. Didn't need much in the way of medication, and they grew out of it before long.

So I would say, no, there's no correlation.

Sleepsleepsleep123 · 07/12/2023 14:24

Not at all but she wad quite a puker until she was 1. Didn't bother her though!

OopsieeDaisy · 07/12/2023 14:25

Lots of hiccuping in the womb with DC1, no reflux 😊

Topseyt123 · 07/12/2023 14:25

My DD1 hiccupped a lot in utero. She didn't have reflux.

The next two I don't remember hicupping much before they were born. They had no reflux either.

Haggisfish3 · 07/12/2023 14:26

Lots of hiccuping dc1 and deffo reflux and indigestion now in teens. Dc 2 no hiccuping and no reflux. I think there will undoubtedly be a link tbh.

ShirleyPhallus · 07/12/2023 14:27

Both mine hiccoughed a lot in utero and neither had reflux

Cotswoldmama · 07/12/2023 14:28

Yep both hiccuped a lot in the womb but neither had reflux

yarnwitch · 07/12/2023 14:29

My DD2 hicupped all the time before she was born. She still hicupped a lot as a baby but had no issues at all like reflux.
DD3 had reflux but was not a noticeable hicupper before she was born.

Crunk · 07/12/2023 14:29

No reflux but definitely colicky. Still very hiccupy now at 16!

Amonthinthecountry · 07/12/2023 14:32

Lots of hiccups, no reflux here.

bettynutkins · 07/12/2023 14:33

1st quite a lot of hiccups - bit of colic first few weeks

2nd loads of hiccups - absolutely fine

bookish83 · 07/12/2023 14:34

Hiccups in utero, tongue tie so spat up a bit but no reflux at all

TheKnittedCharacter · 07/12/2023 14:35

I think it’s an old wives’ take, like the nonsense one about heartburn meaning the baby has lots of hair.

Both of mine hiccupped a lot in utero but not once born and no reflux.

Ardith · 07/12/2023 14:38

Mine hiccuped all the time. Never had reflux. It’s just the baby practicing ysing his lungs.

Just enjoy the hiccups, aren’t they adorable 🥰

roarrfeckingroar · 07/12/2023 14:39

No. My first used to hiccup very regularly and had no reflux, v v rarely sick. My second hiccuped rarely and vomited all the time.

Boating123 · 07/12/2023 14:39

I hadn't made the connection but yes - my daughter had hiccups quite a lot in the womb and did have bad reflux.
She got quite skinny at one point because even though I was feeding her, she couldn't keep her milk down.

Borgonzola · 07/12/2023 14:39

Mine hiccuped a lot, no significant reflux (the usual standard baby regurgitation and evening squalling). I also was a hiccuper, and I didn't have reflux.

30not13 · 07/12/2023 14:42

Only one out of my three babies to have reflux was very hiccupy in the womb yes.

BertieBotts · 07/12/2023 14:42

No reflux, but he had wet lung when he was born and they said it was due to the hiccupping! I don't know if this was an old wives' tale. But I sort of wished I'd done the antenatal colostrum expressing thing because expressing colostrum with a hospital pump was a huge pain.

Actually DS1 hiccupped a lot too but didn't have any issues whatsoever. DS3 was a much quieter baby in the womb (at least until he got big enough that he was folded in half but was very unhappy with this and used to stretch his legs out at every opportunity).

Mamadothehump · 07/12/2023 14:43

Baby 1 - hiccuped a lot, no reflux.
Baby 2 - no hiccups, bad reflux.

CasaAmarela · 07/12/2023 14:43

Yes, I didn't know there was a correlation though!

notanothernamechange12 · 07/12/2023 14:44

Yes
