If your baby hiccoughed a lot in the womb…

… did they have reflux?

People say there’s a link but not much evidence about.

My 1st DS hiccuped a lot before he was born and had really bad reflux and colic.

I’m 33 weeks with my 2nd DS and have really been hoping for a happy, contented, non-refluxy baby this time but he also hiccups a lot. Every day for about 10 mins or so.

Please tell me it’s not a bad omen for reflux 🤦🏻‍♀️

Hiccuped loads, no reflux but continued to get quite regular hiccups for the first 6 months. Was very cute ❤️

DuploTrain · 07/12/2023 15:07

Well it seems like quite a mixed bag, that’s comforting. I spent the first 6 months of DS1’s life soaked with milk and being screamed at.. poor little chap wasn’t really happy until he was over a year old really.

I will continue with positive thinking to manifest a happy, contented, non-refluxy baby 🙏

Both of mine hiccupped in the womb, quite a lot. Both zero reflux, pretty easy babies. Did get hiccups fairly regularly since birth, and youngest DS aged 12, still does. Midwife with DS 1 told me that he would probably get hiccups after he was born too. No health problems. Both breast fed with no problems.

Both hiccuped a lot. First didn't have reflux, my second is 3 weeks old and I think just had normal newborn reflux. Shes a very settled baby but can hear her "choking" on liquid now and again but shes not distressed

My DD hiccoughed throughout my entire pregnancy and she had reflux when born until she was about 9m old. We were very lucky that Infacol helped a lot though.

Plumful · 07/12/2023 15:32

Yes and tongue tie

SingingSands · 07/12/2023 16:03

Both mine had hiccups 3x a day, but no reflux.

Cdoc · 07/12/2023 16:11

Very similar to @Porridgeislife hiccuped a lot, terrible reflux caused by shallow latch due to tongue tie

Fairylightgirl · 07/12/2023 16:13

I didn't know there was a link. But yes!!

kiwimelonlime · 07/12/2023 16:17

My first had constant hiccups from when I was about 6 months pregnant - they were non stop almost daily. No reflux whatsoever, not a trace Smile

Leafysuburb · 07/12/2023 16:19

Yes as a symptom of cmpa

hartof · 07/12/2023 16:31

Yes always hiccuping and had reflux and colic pretty badly.

Cosywintertime · 07/12/2023 16:33

Mine had serious hiccups, no reflux.

peonyjam · 07/12/2023 16:34

Hiccuped loads. I remember searching Mumsnet in a panic! No reflux and not a very sicky baby. He did continue hiccuping lots as a newborn but seemed unbothered.

GodspeedJune · 07/12/2023 16:36

Lots of hiccups when I was pregnant and when she was born but no reflux. A small tongue tie that didn’t need treatment. A very happy and easy baby!

SarahLHs · 07/12/2023 16:45

Both of mine hiccuped a lot in the womb and were very hiccupy babies but never had reflux or colic

Hibernatalie · 07/12/2023 16:50

Dd hiccuped a lot in utero and had colic, not sure about reflux. Ds didn't hiccup in utero and didn't have colic or reflux.

KattiG · 04/12/2024 07:35

My first born - no hiccups and no reflux.
my second - hiccuped loads when I was pregnant, still hiccups loads now and has had horrible reflux since birth. She is combi-fed and was initially worse with formula, but now we’ve switched to anti-reflux formula she seems to be worse after breast feeding… baffling!

Missmarymack2 · 04/12/2024 09:04

My son hiccuped an awful lot to the point where I asked the midwife was it normal. He didn’t have reflux or colic.

Samesame47 · 04/12/2024 09:05

Dc1 hiccuped a lot,
no reflux

pumpkinspicewaffles · 04/12/2024 09:55

No, she constantly had hiccups and didn't have any reflux at all! Hiccups a lot as a child too haha :)

Crazyfarmgirl · 04/12/2024 09:57

My now 2 year old was a serial huccuper in the womb. As in every few minutes by the end. Even had extra scans to make sure everything was ok as I was worried. But he turned out fine, no reflux.

ParksidePen · 04/12/2024 10:06

Hiccuped a lot, but no reflux. Was also something of a unicorn baby and slept brilliantly from the start. We did have a lot of issues with tongue tie and she had to have it cut twice.

minnieot · 05/12/2024 02:31

Funnily enough, yes. Baby had hiccups very frequently in the womb, now still has hiccups a lot at 12 weeks old and has reflux

Narkacist · 05/12/2024 06:30

The heartburn/hairy baby one is substantiated. There’s a suggestion that both are being caused by the same hormone.
Apparently hiccups alone don’t strongly predict reflux. My hiccupy baby didn’t have reflux and my non-hiccupy one did.
