Good luck tomorrow @Katiec1 @Oldermum84.

At this rate I could quite possibly be having a December baby 🤣. Currently deciding if I go for an induction around 4th Dec at 41 weeks if doesn't come of own accord! Fingers crossed you get out for a few days @Nov2023

Alloveragain3 · 23/11/2023 19:39

@BabyBabyBaby123 Ugh, it's awful when they're unwell isn't it?

My DD is 2 weeks old and started with coughing and sneezing and a snotty nose a few days ago.
She saw a midwife for her weigh in today and they specifically said if she starts grunting to have her seen, so I'd definitely take the grunting as a sign to go in.

Our issue is she's not gaining weight :(

She's been breastfeeding every 2-3 hours and "milk drunk" after feeds but has lost 100g in the last 4 days. I'm so upset. I'm thinking it's a combination of her cold with the fact that she doesn't feed for long and sometimes doesn't get a "good" feed (not a lot of swallowing going on).
We need a re weigh tomorrow and I've been trying my best to do long and full feeds today, waking her up if she snoozes during the feed. I also tried expressing into a cup and topping her up (don't have any bottles in the house) but she showed zero interest.

I'm finding it so bloody stressful, especially as she was only 6lbs when born so she's so little and skinny. :(

reememberly · 23/11/2023 19:49

Thinking of you and your baby @Spareincoming.

Congratulations @JD90, hope the feeding improves for you.

Congratulations also @TMI2000, but I’m sorry to hear you had such a difficult time - that must’ve been really frightening for you and your family. Sounds like you’re coping well, but go easy on yourself because that’s a lot to recover from and to process. Is this your first baby?

@BabyBabyBaby123 if you’re worried, I wouldn’t hesitate to have baby checked over. Hope he’s feeling better soon, and your little one @foodislife1.

Good luck to those still waiting!

I’m still feeling a bit up and down depending on how sleep’s been and how the feeding’s going, but overall things are improving and section incision seems to be settling down finally.

reememberly · 23/11/2023 19:56

Good luck for tomorrow @Katiec1 and @Oldermum84!

@Alloveragain3 my baby had a 80g loss at one point after starting to gain and I was really dispirited, but midwife explained how big a difference it can make if the timing of the weigh in is just after a feed vs when they’re due one, or just before they pee vs just after. She even weighed a full nappy to show me the difference a big pee made. If all other signs are good, then try to look at the overall trends. Hope tomorrow’s weigh in goes better.

Alloveragain3 · 23/11/2023 20:00

@TMI2000 God, you've been through so much. I hope you're OK, it sounds like you're coping really well and it's wonderful you and baby can go home soon.

Spareincoming · 23/11/2023 20:57

Evening all. Good news from us; we’re back on the normal paediatric ward with a good chance of being discharged tomorrow or Saturday.

For those with snuffly babies, it’s RSV season and it’s started early! Please keep an eye on the way your baby is breathing - how their chest and tummy looks and how they sound. Grunty, gaspy is a warning sign. About 80% of the young ones on the ward here have RSV. Frightening!

Wow, I haven't been on in a day and what a day!

@Travellingislife similar sleep here. I was freaked out too from what I was used to with DC1!

@JD90 congrats! My little LO took about a week to open wide to latch. Nipple cream was my friend. You are doing the right thing to get support ASAP.

@BabyBabyBaby123 good to hear baby is back up to birth weight. Maybe get a video of the breathing, it's sod's law that kids are fine as soon as you seek help and go back soon after.

@TMI2000 you've done so well to get through that. Make sure you get support, that is a lot to get your head around and post here anytime too. Hope you are home soon.

@Alloveragain3 do you have a syringe? Finger feeding is great for top ups.

@Spareincoming that's a lovely update, fingers crossed for you to be discharged soon.

JD90 · 23/11/2023 21:30

@Thack unfortunately things got quite a lot worse overnight almost zero sleep for me and madam only if being held. I also woke up so sore and engorged I ended up having to pump to even be able to attempt feeding. It didn't go well and after hours of crying (more from me due to the pain) I sterilised a bottle and gave her some expressed milk. Ended up making the decision that right now breastfeeding directly isn't an option for me and bub was starting to show signs of jaundice too so I got my mum and dad to help me out by getting me an electric pump and bringing it round. So I've made the decision to pump for a week or so to see if I can get the nips to heal up (right now both are missing about 30-40% of the top layers of skin and are constantly bleeding) got silver cups, niple cream etc etc etc. Madam has had multiple bottles today and already is so much more content and comfortable and dad can feed her while I'm pumping. We've also finally managed for the second time since we've been home to get her settled and sleeping in her crib. So I'm now on a 2 ish hour pumping schedule to make sure I don't lose my supply and it comes in properly. Bub is fast off in her crib and dad is asleep so he can wake up for the next feed. I do feel so sorry for him as he is still working full time too, luckily he genuinely falls asleep in a matter of seconds it's impressive!
Plus I'm also trying to support and manage a young teen DD going through a severe mental health crisis, so that's just one more thing to be thinking about constantly 🤦🏻‍♀️ but we keep going because that's all we can do!

JoyApple · 23/11/2023 22:33

@Spareincoming really pleased to hear your baby is on the mend. How did you know when to take your baby in?

My baby has had runny eyes from this morning and seems to have a slight fever now and has gone quiet and not as interested in drinking milk. I'm getting worried now. What should I be looking out for?

Spareincoming · 23/11/2023 22:39

@JoyApple Dc was just off. Not as interested in feeding and quite lethargic.
When they’re so small no health care professional is going to complain or judge you asking for medical opinion or reassurance - if you feel somethings not right or you’re uneasy, get help.

TMI2000 · 24/11/2023 12:50

Thank you girls @reememberly and @Alloveragain3
yes this is my first baby so was very scary, I feel horrible for my family as well for having to see me like that. I feel so lucky that I was discharged home last night so just trying to chill out and recover as much as possible!

Katiec1 · 25/11/2023 06:49

Meet Thea Grace🩷
Well our day finally arrived yesterday (41wks) via section.
Was a very calm experience, arrived at 7.30 and baby delivered at 12.14pm weighing a whopping 8lb 14oz. Both doing good at the moment, please god it stays this way 🤞🏼
hoping everyone is keeping well!

foodislife1 · 25/11/2023 07:47

Congrats @Katiec1!
And to all the other new arrivals! I'm guessing most of the November babies have been born now :)

A quick question for those that have had a C-section. Is anyone else getting occasional tingling in legs? It's only at night and not painful/swollen so it's not DVT. Was wondering if it was a post op symptom that hopefully goes away in time.

Didn't have it with my last section so just wanted to ask if it's 'normal'

Alloveragain3 · 25/11/2023 15:46

Welcome new babies!

We've had a shit couple of days. Baby wasn't gaining weight and then her cold symptoms were worsening.
Last night her breathing got laboured suddenly and she refused feeds. I called 111 who sent an ambulance.
She's now on oxygen and tube feeding and has tested positive for RSV.
She's also had a lumbar puncture as she spiked a fever.
It's horrible seeing her like this and I'm so anxious. Her oxygen Sats keep dropping and she's so weak :(
Please have her in your thoughts x

Bless you @Alloveragain3 - stay strong for bubs. Thinking of you, send love and prayers x

JD90 · 25/11/2023 19:52

Had this arrived from amazon this evening, figured for £34 it was worth a shot. Just tried it and got just as much milk as with my non hands free one! Just thought I'd share it for anyone else out there who might be pumping and gets frustrated being stuck either doing one at a time or having to hold it in awkward positions and not be able to do anything else. :D fingers crossed it keeps working as well and I'm not stuck trapped holding the Pump 10 times a day and cant do anything else. 🤣 now just to hope my nipples decide to heal up more, definitely not as sore and no longer actively bleeding but the amount of skin missing from them is utterly horrendous and looks terrible.

Deal: TOVVILD Double Wearable Breast Pump Hands Free - Electric Breast Pump with 3 Modes and 9 Levels, Portable Breastfeeding Dual Breast Milk Pump, Low Noise & Painless,Memory Function, 24mm Flange https://amzn.eu/d/39r27wp

Thack · 25/11/2023 20:47

@JD90 that sounds so painful! Glad the pump is a winner. I want to avoid pumping but it's time to introduce a bottle soon (I want the option). Have you looked into nipple shields?

What a beaut @Katiec1 hope you have a smooth recovery and lots of newborn cuddles!

Sending love @Alloveragain3 You're in the right place, she will bounce back strong. How're you holding up?

Alloveragain3 · 25/11/2023 20:51

Thank you all for the support, it means a lot.

Little one is doing OK, still needs a little oxygen and is very sleepy but her breathing is less laboured.

I've been able to use a hospital pump so she's having my expressed milk from a NG tube. However, another worry is that I'm not pumping much. Only about 20mls every 2 hours? Probably doesn't help that I'm exhausted and haven't slept for quite a while.

I really hope we can get home soon as my toddler is having a tough time with us being away so much (her induction took days!).

JD90 · 25/11/2023 20:54

@Thack I tried them but unfortunately they didn't work out with madam being so small mouthed she could never get the end in her mouth properly and after the few days of non feeding properly was so exhausted she also lacked the strength to do it. However I am still going to try again once I'm healed.

PinkPlantCase · 25/11/2023 21:42

@Alloveragain3 make sure you’re still eating and drinking lots especially in a warm hospital! It must be so difficult to think about yourself aswell as baby. Pump often through the night aswell as the day.

And remember that the volume of breast milk that baby needs is much less than the volume of formula. At this age baby’s stomach is still tiny and breastmilk is a very efficient food source! Hope you have a good night x

Katiec1 · 25/11/2023 22:29

@Alloveragain3 hoping your little bounces back quick enough.

Quick question for any section mommas…have any of you who’s had a section had a bad pain/cramp in your right shoulder? Ive been told that it can be normal after a section as it’s to do with gas from the tummy that spreads and it’ll pass with time.
if anyone experienced this did you find anything that maybe helped ease it a bit.

Spareincoming · 26/11/2023 01:26

@Alloveragain3 Thinking of you, we went in for the same reasons last Sunday and got home today.
Don’t forget to look after yourself whilst you’re in there.
