I made a list with my partner of the items we need to get together before baby is born, my MIL has seen it and told me it is not needed. We will be given items such as the pram, however I feel that the items I have written down to get before I give birth are essential. Im 20 weeks now

Here it is:

Bedtime

Moses basket - someones given us this
3-4 cellular blankets
2 tog baby sleeping bag
Fitted sheets for moses basket matress
Nightlight/room thermometer
Dummy

Breast pump (optional)
Milk storage bags
Formula just incase
4-6 bottles
Bottle warmer
Steralising equipment/milton
Bottle brush

Nappies
Wipes
Barrier cream/sudocrem

I think all that stuff is needed! Also if you intend to breastfeed I'd definitely get a good pump (youve put it as optional) it can really help save a rocky breastfeeding journey if you hit problems

LunaLoveFood · 17/10/2023 12:32

The only thing I think is a waste of time from your list is a baby bath, but that's personal preference .
I think your mil needs to but out!

everywherebear · 17/10/2023 12:32

Seems a perfectly reasonable list to me! I'm sure there are a couple of items you could manage without but as long as buying them doesn't cause any financial issues then go ahead and buy them! I think I had all these items for my babies and made use of them all!

Bootskates · 17/10/2023 12:33

Looks fine to me? I used all/most of your list.

Although if you are planning to breastfeed and the formula is just in case, I would get rid of the bottles/steriliser and just get some of the disposable bottles already made up with the teats and then reasses when baby I'd born and is feeding. You can put the money aside for FF gear and send DP out if needed

RoseRows · 17/10/2023 12:34

Looks like a perfect list to me.

mollyfolk · 17/10/2023 12:34

It looks perfect. Lesson 1 In motherhood is to learn how to listen to your MIL, smile and nod and do what you think is best.

Sunshineclouds11 · 17/10/2023 12:34

A good list to me!

Only thing I didn't use was a steriliser, I used MAM bottles so they were sterilised in microwave. I did buy Milton tablets for other things.

TheShellBeach · 17/10/2023 12:35

The only thing on that list that you don't need is the dummy.

Cowlover89 · 17/10/2023 12:35

That's a good list! Ignore your mil

MexicanDrinkingWorm · 17/10/2023 12:36

Id get a bath seat instead of baby bath, you’ll get more use out of it.
id also say mattress protectors and another sleeping bag are needed if you want to use them a lot, one vomit in the night and you’ll need another.
if you’re trying breastfeeding I wouldn’t bother with all the pumping/bottle stuff until you know you need it either. Bottle warmer I’ve never used in all my mix feeding days.

BurbageBrook · 17/10/2023 12:37

If you're keen to breastfeed I wouldn't bother with all the formula related stuff. Better to just buy it if you really need it later.

OhNoForever · 17/10/2023 12:37

I would definitely get the sling especially if you want to bf.

You need to add approx 10000 muslins to your list!

I think the rest looks fine. Personally, I didn't get formula things because I really wanted to bf so I didn't want to have the temptation if it got too hard. You also shouldn't pump til about 6 weeks pp if you want to establish feeding so you could leave that til you see how it's going. For bf finding a local bf support group made the most difference to my journey.

Oh, and I didn't really use the baby bath.

anicecuppateaa · 17/10/2023 12:37

Looks fine. I would scrap the bottle stuff for now if you plan to bf, you can always order with next day delivery if needed. Only other thing, we only had a couple of bath towels. For the first couple of months we bathed weekly.

Ionapussy · 17/10/2023 12:38

Looks fine to me although I didn't bother buying all the bottle paraphernalia as I was planning on breastfeeding. Unless you live somewhere really remote your OH can just run to town to get bottles etc if you feel you need them.

I also never had a moses basket. I had a crib in the bedroom and used the pram in the living room for naps but I lived in a small flat so lack of space was a problem

Wotchaz · 17/10/2023 12:38

Yep you’re definitely not being ott. I probably wouldn’t get all the feeding stuff other than some muslins and ready-mix formula for emergency until you know what you’re going to do re feeding, but everything else seems sensible. Suspect you’ll want another couple of packs of clothes pretty soon as they run through laundry like you wouldn’t believe, and I’ve never used a baby bath and wouldn’t have needed 3/4 towels - but it’s not a ridiculous list by any means.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 17/10/2023 12:39

Maybe a pramsuit for when out. Also if your short of space 1-2 towels is enough as they dry quick and not used every day. Remember you need things also. Good luck

BadBarry · 17/10/2023 12:39

As ppl smile / nod and crack on with what you want to do.
The list of unwanted advice from people will be endless unfortunately Brew

Bluebellst · 17/10/2023 12:39

Looks like a good list to me!

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 17/10/2023 12:40

Also might be worth using non bio to wash clothes if you use bio now

Somewhatchallenging · 17/10/2023 12:40

I don’t think you need a lot of that list. Why have the cellular blankets and a sleeping bag? I don’t think you need a night light/thermometer. For feeding, it depends if you breast or bottle feed. I don’t see why you need special “soft towels”. We just used our normal ones. Didn’t use a changing bag. A sling I’d say is essential. But we didn’t have a car seat - no car. Didn’t use a pram. You don’t need special nail scissors.

Bluebellst · 17/10/2023 12:40

TheShellBeach · 17/10/2023 12:35

The only thing on that list that you don't need is the dummy.

How do you know she won’t need the dummy?? It saved me in the middle of a sleepless night with baby number 3, very glad I had brought some!

onawave · 17/10/2023 12:41

I had everything on your list except the baby bath but we had a seat to put in our bath instead. The only thing I would suggest is however muslins/cloths you're planning on buying, double it.

orangeblosssom · 17/10/2023 12:41

Looks good to me.
No need for dummy or nasal aspirator.
Baby bath seat more useful.

BurbageBrook · 17/10/2023 12:42

I would cut down the amount of cellular blankets and get a thick cosy pram blanket (to be used when supervised). It's none of your MIL's business though! Everyone ends up buying some things they don't need in the end when pregnant as baby's are hard to predict. My baby hated the sling for example and preferred to sleep in the pram.

Sunshineclouds11 · 17/10/2023 12:42

@Somewhatchallenging
We used blankets through the day and for car seat, pram. Sleeping bags for night time.

you didn't use a pram? How?
