If planning on breastfeeding you need a good pump which is expensive. It’s a big wasted expense if your not going to feed
Eh? You don't need a breastpump to breastfeed. You might want one if you want to express and bottle feed breast milk, or you might have difficulty latching and need to pump but that's much less likely. It's a big wasted expense if you find it goes fine.

I used a pump with DC1 just to be able to go to one specific event, it was nothing to do with getting bf started. And with DC2 i couldn't be arsed with the faff of it so never used the pump or any bottles.

And I got more out with my handheld manual tommee tippee than with the medela which fortunately i managed to sell

Obviously if she is planning to BF and formula feed, then she is going to need both but most people don’t choose to do both from the get go.

No one is trying to put her off formula feeding.

I wasn't talking about formula feeding, I was talking about bottle feeding with breastmilk, which OP has made clear she wants to do based on what she views as an essential - breast pump, milk storage bags, bottles...

Yes I agree if she’s planning to express her BM then she’ll need all of those things too but you would establish BF first, which is why dummies and bottles aren’t recommended for the first couple of weeks.

As I said, if money isn’t an issue then get everything on the list, just in case.

But if money is tight, then just get the basics and then buy the extras as and when you need them.
