Hi all

Just wanted to know if your baby weighed less than 7lbs did you have to buy tiny baby clothes or were they okay in newborn size? If they were wearing newborn size, was it quite a bit bigger/loose?

Thank you in advance :)

Mine were 5lbs12 and 6lbs4.

Both were swamped by newborn Suze and had to wear tiny babies. The best I found at the time were from asda, but that was a few years ago now.

Hi OP, my DD was 5lb14
The tiny baby clothes were needed! But only for a couple of weeks maybe 3 weeks tops.
We got about 5 vests and 5 babygrows in Tesco (obv you'll probably have to do a wash every other day) but I wouldn't buy too much more than that because baby will fit in newborn fairly quickly.
Also I've found now my DD is going into 0-3m and some are still a tad big for her but it doesn't matter if they're a little bit baggy anyway.

MariaVT65 · 05/10/2023 18:40

Mine was 6lb8oz and only fit into his newborn clothes for 2 weeks before moving up to 0-3m. He was long though

PlantDoctor · 05/10/2023 18:41

Just to add, my DD was 7lb but she was swamped in newborn nappies and had to have the premature baby ones for a week or two. Something to think about as had to send grandparents on an emergency nappy run!

potplant · 05/10/2023 18:41

Mine were 4lbers and were in tiny baby clothes.
they hit 0-3 when they were 3 months old.

My baby is only just fitting her newborn size stuff now at 8lbs, she came out 6 and a half pounds and we didn’t have nearly enough tiny baby stuff!

Scutterbug · 05/10/2023 18:41

My smallest was 5lb 13 and needed tiny baby clothes.

Gabby10 · 05/10/2023 18:42

My DD was 5lb and newborn were massive, for the first few weeks even tiny baby were big, did manage to get some prem from Asda but you only need a few vests/babygrows. My DD lived in babygrows for at least 3 months x

potplant · 05/10/2023 18:43

Actually, PlantDoctor makes a good point about nappies. Too big clothes isn’t that a big deal, but too big nappies definitely is.

Bendysnap · 05/10/2023 18:43

New born ridiculously too big for my 4lber and kind of too big for my 6lb. I initially didnt get the memo that 0-3 wasn’t the smallest size so I was scrabbling around for a bit trying to get stuff.

Asda tiny baby were good for premie babies not sure if they still have the range.

TulipsTulipTulips · 05/10/2023 18:43

Newborn was baggy but fine on mine (6lbs and 6.6lbs). I had some tiny baby stuff which was better, but only needed for a couple of weeks so not worth a massive outlay.

My top tip is always to buy some and keep it in the packet so it’s there if you need it, returnable if not.

mynameiscalypso · 05/10/2023 18:44

Mine was 6lb8oz too and he fit in newborn size okay. Like a PP, he moved up to 0-3 very quickly so we only got a month or so out of them.

TenderChicken · 05/10/2023 18:44

Born 6lb4oz (went down to 5lb 11oz) tiny baby fit best.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 05/10/2023 18:45

My son was unexpectedly less than 7lb. I full on cried to my mum because his clothes were all too big. She went out and bought some Tiny Baby clothes for him, washed them, and delivered them to the hospital

They fit him perfectly.

AlltheFs · 05/10/2023 18:46

6lb 10 that dropped to 6lb 3, she was fine in newborn but it was big. There was huge variation by brand though. Primark was small, John Lewis enormous.

She grew in to the newborn fairly soon though. She wasn’t wearing much 0-3 until she was 3 months but by 6 months had caught up and then was in 6-9 at 6 months if that makes sense.

Meceme · 05/10/2023 18:47

Mine was 2lb 5oz but couldn't leave neonates until 4lb. We had tiny baby clothes from Boots (2-5lb) then (5-8lb).
Didn't get into newborn until at least 8lb and they still looked big.

Meceme · 05/10/2023 18:48

They do tiny baby nappies too.

PlantDoctor · 05/10/2023 18:49

Different shops vary hugely in sizing too. I remember Next being massive. We mostly had Asda!

Clemally · 05/10/2023 18:51

My 5lb wore tiny baby, probably only for a couple of weeks though.

1daughterand3sons · 05/10/2023 18:52

Newborn clothes swamped all of mine the first 3 just wore clothes that was too big til they fitted in them. 6lb 5oz and 6lb 4oz
My last one weighed 5lb and I had so get premature baby clothes for him, he was so small I was scared he suffercate in the newborn clothes.

LethalToddlerElbows · 05/10/2023 18:56

Mine was 6lb 6oz, she was quite a long thin baby but newborn swamped her. DH popped out to get the smaller nappies and my mum, saint that she is, found a bundle of tiny baby sleepsuits and vests on Facebook market place and collected locally. We made do in the hospital but it meant we had plenty once we were home. I bought a few bits as well as she was in that size for a good month, then I bundled it all up and sold it in to another mum in the same situation Grin

It took her a while to be in the 'correct' size, she was in newborn/0-3 until almost 5 months, and then 3-6 for about a month until she randomly had a massive growth spurt and went straight into 6-12!

Etam · 05/10/2023 18:56

Yes I needed tiny baby clothes for both mine (both approx 6.5lbs). They were in tiny baby for a month or so at least I'd say. They were swamped in new born and look so silly in the photos we have of them wearing such gigantic clothes. It looks like they have no arms or legs because they're just empty sacks of fabric 😂

WhiskersPete · 05/10/2023 19:15

It depends. DD1 was 5lb 4oz and was swamped in newborn size.

DD2 was bang on 7lb and newborn was just right.

Thinkbiglittleone · 05/10/2023 19:17

At 5lb 14, yes tiny baby was very much needed.

I would buy a few of each and go from there.

DiscoBeat · 05/10/2023 19:22

Mine were 7/12 and 8/5 and Newborn was fine. I think there was one thing that we had to return for a Tiny size but I think it was probably just over sized because everything else was ok.
