@FinallyMrsT It is expensive and not necessarily for everyone/even needed! It makes sense to have the NHS blood tests and they give you the odds of a baby with Downs / Patau / Edwards. However, this is pretty much determined by an algorithm considering factors such as age and weight etc.
Then if you come back as a high risk, you can have further testing with the NHS or go for the NIPT. The NIPT is less invasive and gives a good indicator of risk for Downs, apparently it's not as accurate with Edwards and Patau (unless results are low risk, from what I understand). But if I had high risk for Edwards / Patau (not compatible with life) I would opt for amniocentesis via the NHS anyway to confirm.
NIPT is usually favoured by older mums and those who have had poorly babies in the past. It's more accurate than an algorithm but it's a screening test, not a diagnostic test.
I've probably missed loads out 🤣 I was going to get it last time at 34 but my risk was low via NHS so I didn't bother. Now I'm 37 I know it'll be increased!
