@Rowanandremy big congratulations!

@unluckyinlife So sorry about your dad. My mum doesn't like the name we've chosen for our daughter. She says it's spelled wrong and is a boys name. (It's not, it's unisex but much more common for girls than boys now!). She doesn't like our son's middle name, either.

Rowanandremy · 19/07/2023 14:48

@unluckyinlife Im so pleased your baby has stayed out and is growing well, how exciting you get to see your family next week all being well :) ah the perils of choosing a name, all I can say is as long as you and dh are happy then that’s all matters - choosing names is exciting! Don’t let anyone ruin it for you, whether now by thinking on it or after your little one is born - everyone has opinions but it doesn’t always mean they should share them especially 3 days post birth. I’m so sorry about your dad, I hope it’s an optimistic outlook.

@BMK I know! Wasn’t expecting it but I shouldn’t have been so shocked, I was born with a full head of hair that you could almost plait 😂 I am obsessed with his fingers and little finger nails, it’s amazing that we can grow little humans - I can’t believe he ever fit 😂 he’s not a Leo but it’s possible he could have Leo traits, dw is thrilled to have him so isn’t at all bothered he isn’t a Leo - not that I ever thought she would be but it was a fun bit of banter for us. Oh no! I really hope the acupuncture works and baby goes into the right position for you, it’s such a worry when they aren’t. I’m not breastfeeding

@Amme18 thank you! 😁 everyone who saw him at the hospital commented on his hair, we love it and it’s so so soft. That sounds like a positive sign! I had a fair bit of that before my waters went so hopefully for you it’s soon.

Completely forgot to say congratulations to everyone else who has had their babies! Wishing everyone who has, good recoveries, lovely baby snuggles and good sleep!

Paintandpots · 19/07/2023 15:14

Congratulations to the newborns and their mummies so far. Hoping everyone had had a good birthing experience.

MinnieFirstTimeMum · 19/07/2023 15:44

@BusyBushBaby I think we will be the same when we announce our name. It is unisex also but you hear it more for girls than boys now. But we love it and trying to remind ourselves that that is what matters at this point, and just hope that he grows up to love it too x

MinnieFirstTimeMum · 19/07/2023 15:47

@Rowanandremy aww I have just seen the picture... how adorable is his hair! Amazing!
I keep having heartburn so I am choosing to believe the old wives tale that he will also have a full head of hair 💙

BoodifulGoose · 19/07/2023 16:27

@Rowanandremy congratulations! So happy for you all 🥰

@unluckyinlife so sorry to hear about your dad, I hope you're doing okay 💙

Marmaladebear · 19/07/2023 16:34

@Rowanandremy gorgeous head of hair!! Hope you're managing to get some rest between all the feeding and cuddles!

@unluckyinlife I'm so sorry to hear about your dad. I hope you're doing okay and getting all the support you need xx

@Amme18 ahh sounds promising! Hopefully baby will be here soon 💕

Marmaladebear · 19/07/2023 16:38

So I just had my midwife appointment where I discussed home birth as a back up plan and the midwife really tried to talk me out of it 😔 I found it very frustrating and it took me back to my first birth experience where I was ignored and not believed or listened to...

Dj20 · 19/07/2023 17:00

Congratulations @Rowanandremy what a lush full head of hair he has.

I am due my final consultant appointment at 37+5 . Do you think that is too late to change my birth plan with them. I have currently said I want a vaginal birth but I have no choice as in a epidural as I have to go pain free for medical reasons. But the more I read stuff the more I think it may be best for a c section , I really do not want an assisted birth with the forceps .

BCxx · 19/07/2023 18:17

@Dj20 no not too late but you could maybe get the ball rolling before your appointment and contact your midwife to say about the change. Just in case you were to go into labour early and they’d then just assume you wanted to have a vaginal birth

@Marmaladebear thats a shame you found that first time round 😔 what was her reasons for not wanting you to have a home birth?

DesertSnow · 19/07/2023 18:56

@Rowanandremy huge congratulations, and just to echo what everyone is saying what amazing hair! Sounds like he's doing really well and you're doing an amazing job. It's lovely to be adding more to the next 'delivered' list.

@BMK Yep, I'm on the dates, though gosh they're horrid! Really hope baby turns for you.

@MinnieFirstTimeMum When you say it in days it really does feel sooner! My due date is in 10 days and c-section in 19 if she doesn't turn up before that, which feels surreal saying.

@HRSC I was tested for Group B Strep, the swab was fine to do and given how dangerous it can be, I personally think it should be routine so was glad to be tested.

@DomesticElf Sorry you're feeling poorly, that's rotten. Hope it passes soon.

@unluckyinlife Pleased to hear baby is still cooking. I've been seeing each day as a bonus for my little one since we were told we might have to deliver v. early. Sorry to hear about your dad, that's hard news to take at any time but particularly now. On names, I'm pretty sure there will be some eyebrows at the name we've picked. I'm sure we'll get lots of 'but that's a pet's name' but we like it, it's meaningful to us and it has to work in two languages/cultures. Hopefully people won't be too vocal!

@Amme18 That sounds promising! Hope it's not too long for you.

@Marmaladebear That sounds very disappointing, I'm sorry they tried to talk you out of it. Did they give reasons?

@Dj20 I'm not sure what their perspective will be, but personally I don't see why a woman shouldn't change her mind about her birth plan at any point. If you want a section, ask for one and be firm.

Only two days left of work before I finish at 38+6. I've been feeling a bit moody and crampy, but no indication of anything happening as I imagine that's pretty normal for this gestation (38+4 today). Getting a bit apprehensive about what's to come now.

A friend of ours just had a baby and called him quite an unusual name but it’s really lovely, it’s not even weird, just not commonly used. Three different times in the last week I’ve been speaking to people and they’ve brought up the name and done a bit of a face at it. Another friend called her little girl something that’s probably in the top 200 names but between 100-200 I’d guess. I had a friend saying she didn’t like it. It really bugs me! No one asked if you like it 🙈 If everyone in the world was to have that attitude we’d have everyone called the same 5 names. I just can never understand how it affects anyone’s else’s life what your baby is called! There are definitely some names on the more extreme end of that scale but I just don’t get people’s need to give their opinion on it when the people might not have liked the names they picked!

Recoba · 19/07/2023 20:20

@Marmaladebear really sorry to hear about your negative experience. Can you talk to another midwife/see if there's someone on the home birth team you can talk to?

BMK · 19/07/2023 21:28

@unluckyinlife I'm so sorry- I just scrolled back and found your post!!*I thought it was just on FB group. I'm so sorry that just when you were getting some positive upbeat feelings that this descended upon you. What a shock. Is it bad or OK on the scale of ? Teh treatments are v good for many. I personally would go the Gerson diet (cut out all sugar ,white flour, processed foods, meat bar fish and organic chicken and eat mainly veg, whole grains and juice non stop, along with vitamins) if I found out that it was me,but that is literally just me. Very happy for you that you're nearly 35 weeks!!! How are you feeling and when do you have next appt?
@Paintandpots re birthing ball I have no idea,I have never used one! @HRSC when are you next in and do they think it's GD?
@Createcomet and @CityKity how are you both ?@Amme18 you're the same date as me and I had contraction like cramps twice this week which just stopped and no sign of anything else but as baby is still breech I think,I have paused hoping for imminent landing!!@Marmaladebear the only thing about home birthing is re risk- would it take long to get ambulance/get to hospital if baby got stuck or some complication? It's all fine until it isn't so that's teh only reason I don't go for them! But if you have a way of dealing with those contingencies..like even in that situation an ambulance is unlikely to save the situation if you need imminent c section or etc

Marmaladebear · 19/07/2023 21:57

@DesertSnow @BCxx @Recoba @BMK this sounds bad but my impression was that she was just being lazy because she couldn't be bothered coming to my house for a home birth assessment for something that was just a back up plan (plan A is to go to the birth centre/labour ward). There's no medical/risk reason why I can't have one and after advocating for myself she relented and said she'll come to my house on Monday to do an assessment if she's not too busy. Just felt frustrated I had to really persuade her and reminded me of when I was a FTM last time and people didn't believe I was in labour (when I was actually 5cm!) Or when I had things on my birth preferences that just got ignored.

My main reason for wanting to be assessed for home birth is because I want to be prepared in case I end up having the baby at home if childcare can't get to me in time for my son (eg I go into labour after 10pm, the first train my mum can get to me is 6am realistically she wouldn't get to me until 9am earliest so I could have had the baby by then). I have friends on standby in London but with weddings and holidays this summer there's no guarantee they'll be able to get to me... The midwife basically kept telling me I could bring my kid to the hospital to wait in the hall with my husband while I'm in labour but that means labouring on my own and honestly I would rather do it all at home with my husband by my side than alone and worrying who is looking after my kid.

I know a couple of people who have had their babies in the bathroom floor unintentionally and I'd just rather be prepared and have a midwife I can call to my house if that ends up being the position we find ourselves in rather than an accidental home birth.

JT2021 · 19/07/2023 22:17

Hi everyone! I haven’t been on mumsnet in quite a while - life took over! Have tried to catch up, so congrats to all the mums and new babies in the group, it’s so exciting to hear your news!!

Finally on mat leave myself and 37 weeks - feels very surreal to be at this point now as a FTM. Have been cramping with back pain solidly on and off for a few days now but no other signs, so think this is me for the next few weeks. Anyone else a bit fed up now?!

Also I wish I could get into this whole ‘nesting’ thing… but I’m just too tired for it. The third trimester insomnia has been dreadful and I’m starting to get very jealous / annoyed with my poor snoring DH every night now!!

Anyway hope you are all doing okay in these final few weeks ❤

BCxx · 19/07/2023 22:22

@Marmaladebear thats annoying 😔 I think they must just be so busy they have no time for anything but that’s no excuse and in my hospital anyway they are really trying to encourage people to try for a home birth. It seems like you’d actually get more one to one (or even two to one) care with a home birth than you would in hospital. That’s obviously just a big priority at my hospital though when lots of other things aren’t 🤦🏼‍♀️ It’s definitely sensible to think through your options and the possibilities when you have the childcare issue. Are you hoping to have someone come to stay for childcare when you reach 40 weeks or is that going to stay as the plan until you go into labour?

CityKity · 19/07/2023 23:09

@BMK Doing okay! Thanks for thinking of me, I’ve left all baby buying so last minute that I haven’t been on this thread so much. I can’t believe we have babies here already, huge congrats @Rowanandremy what a gorgeous head of hair 🥰. I’ve had zero heart burn but was a pretty hairy baby myself, so am curious to see what my baby will be like.

After panicking about our flat, started to feel more settled. Have thrown a lick of paint around and now we have more baby things filling the space, I’m just a bit more accepting of it all.
Now after asking you ladies about colostrum harvesting / perineal massage I still haven’t gotten around to it! I really have been meaning to but is anyone else finding the days are flying by?!
@JT2021 I’m also a FTM currently 38w+1 and feel in a weird limbo of thinking god it could be any day or another 4 weeks! Very impatient, but I don’t think the babies head is engaged so I think there’s still a while to go. I have been getting some very mild period-y lower back ache and can’t walk as comfortably as usual but that’s about it. Also with you on the recent insomnia, drives me crazy!
Tomorrows job is packing a hospital bag, still need/want to buy a cute outfit for the baby for hospital any brand recommendations?

BMK · 20/07/2023 00:28

@Marmaladebear I totally understand, not about the merits but about the attitude of not actually doing her job and not thinking youbare relevant or worth her time! If you want hb go for it! That's what teh service is for! If it were me I'd probably make a complaint and insist upon it.
@CityKity yes no stress is best approach, nothing that can't be done whilst you're in hosp, only thing is getting there! Even the hosp have clothes and nappies but there will ve judgment so pack the baby bag if nothing else!
I have found out from someone not related to my actual 'care" that my hospital have a hypnobirthing room with soft low lights and music and all sorts so I'm definitely going to seek that one out as I really hate the clinical setting and bright lights of ord delivery rooms. I always think teh baby must be petrified coming out into such bright lights and it's not exactly as conducive to relaxing as to what this other room sounds like!

HRSC · 20/07/2023 00:37

Thanks @DesertSnow about the strep b test. A friend of mine didn’t know she had it and her baby was very sick when he was born. Was just slightly concerned as my blood test results said that I had a higher level of bacteria… will see what the strep b test results come back with !!

@unluckyinlife so sorry to hear about your father. Hope you are ok and have support around you.

Today I’ve been feeling some sharp pains on the top of my bump, like around the belly button and to the right and left. It feels like little stabbing pains. Does anyone know what this could be? It definitely doesn’t feel like cramps. I have in the last week had an extremely itchy bump and a whole load of stretch marks have appeared (despite lathering myself in cream and oil since the first positive test! 🤦‍♀️). Could it be more stretching happening? Or round ligament pain? I thought that was lower down in the groin area though? Have had an awful lot of that too…

Rowanandremy · 20/07/2023 04:44

@unluckyinlife I’m so sorry, just reread my last message to you and seen that my phone autocorrected ‘put’ to ‘out’ - it was meant to read ‘I’m so glad your baby has stayed put’.

@Paintandpots Thank you! I can honestly say that my birthing experience was made to be a really phenomenal one because of the hospital and midwives there, absolutely couldn’t fault them and they made it a really special experience for me and my wife

@MinnieFirstTimeMum his hair is gorgeous and soo soft, I keep finding myself just stroking his head 😂 ooh that sounds promising, I can’t wait to see how many who had/have heartburn have babies with lots of hair or very little.

@BoodifulGoose thank you! We are absolutely smitten and so happy to have him here.

@Marmaladebear dw is being an absolute star and making sure I get plenty of rest and taking things at a steady pace. Super grateful to her because even though I’m recovering well I’m definitely sore and a bit delicate if I try to move fast.

@Dj20 thank you! I didn’t love the heartburn but I am completely in love with his hair 😂

@DesertSnow thank you so much, I can’t believe he’s here. We had a journey getting here but we feel like our little family is complete. Dd is also absolutely smitten and keeps stroking his hair, I’m not sure she realises she’s doing it sometimes 😂 so far he’s an absolute joy and such a trooper with all the vomiting and mucus issues but they seem to be settling down thankfully.

@CityKity its such a good job he likes his head being stroked, dd was that baby with a grumpy face and a geroff me look whenever we’d stroke her head but ds seems to love it - good job really as everyone is smitten with him and his hair and before you realise you’re doing it, your stroking his hair 😂 it’s really funny because my mum didn’t have bad heartburn with me and I was born with thick long hair, one of my SILs had horrendous heartburn and a baby with very little hair and my other SIL had some heartburn but not horrendous and her baby had a full head of gorgeous hair. I had no heartburn with dd who had very little hair and with ds I had some really awful nights with heartburn and some foods I absolutely had to avoid unless I wanted to end up crying in pain. We might need another list, due, delivered and how much hair each baby has 😂😂

Rowanandremy · 20/07/2023 05:19

@Marmaladebear I’m so sorry the midwife tried to convince you not to have a home birth and that it left you feeling like what you want doesn’t matter. It absolutely does and you’ve got good reasons to have a home birth as a plan b. I don’t see any reason, beyond a medical need, why it’s not a viable option for you and no excuses on that midwife’s part for her actions in trying to dissuade you and making you feel bad. Is there another midwife on the home birth team that you could request instead?

@Dj20 I don’t think there’s a cut off time where you can’t change your birth plan, more a case of get the ball rolling as soon as you can once you have changed your mind so that the relevant people can be prepared. I hope you get the birth experience that you want :)

@DesertSnow thats exciting that you’re nearly finished with work, hats off to you and everyone else who has worked beyond 36 weeks - I was beyond exhausted by then! Ooh that’s a positive sign, dw says she new I was close because I got really moody and then the intermittent cramps started so you never know!

@CityKity so glad you are doing well and that you feel better about your flat, amazing what a lick of paint and seeing some baby things can do for you. Seeing DD’s things filling the space in our old home really did help me back then. I’ve found that pregnancy does things to your sense of time, either it seems to be going slowly or it’s sped up almost too fast 😂 I’d meant to start harvesting colostrum at 36 weeks but didn’t end up doing it until about 3/4 days before ds arrived.

@BMK the hypo birthing room sounds lovely, I hope you get it. I’d been adamant I really didn’t want a labour ward because of how clinical it all seemed, have to say though that the room we had was lovely and the midwives were very conscious of the lighting and offered us music if we wanted - not sure if that was just the hospital we were in though as back when we had dd we toured the birthing centre and attached labour ward and it was very, very clinical which is partly why were put off!

Ds has had his feed and is conked out after having to wait and make sure he isn’t sick (just a good excuse for a prolonged cuddle!) and I just wanted to thank everyone for making this group amazing. I have enjoyed being a part of this and getting to know you all and I hope you don’t mind if I stick around now that ds is here - I am so looking forward to hearing about everyone’s babies being born

airmaxJ · 20/07/2023 07:02

My waters have went at 2am and I'm in for my c section sometime today at 39 weeks so here goes I'll update you all when I can x
