I had my 20th week scan yesterday as well and we were told everything was ok.

I had moments of relief yesterday but today I have started worrying again. What if the sonographer was not meticulous enough or got distracted for a moment and missed something important?

Anyone else thinking about getting a private anomaly scan? The clinic where I did my NIPT was really great and all the scans are done by fetal medicine doctors. The 12th week scan we got there as part of NIPT was head and shoulders above the the NHS 12th week scan. The only issue is the hefty price tag.

Mushroo · 01/08/2023 19:28

@Charlielechat ah thank you! Hopefully it doesn’t kick in with soreness the next day

Itonlytakesaminute · 01/08/2023 19:51

@ai38 I had a private anomaly scan at 18 weeks and it was amazing and worth every penny

Georgia31 · 01/08/2023 20:50

Congratulations to everyone who has had their scan. I've been quiet recently due to suffering with my mental health a little. Constant worrying. But we had our 20week scan today and found out we are expecting a rainbow baby girl🩷🩷
Our little boy is over the moon to be having a little sister, he's asked if we can go bow shopping next week the little love 🥰

Lavender2020 · 01/08/2023 21:27

@Georgia31 congratulations on your little girl! Bless you. So lovely 💗

SummerKnight · 02/08/2023 06:42

Good morning all,
I am due in December and currently just over 20 weeks pregnant. I had a miscarriage a little while ago at around 13 weeks and although all of my scans seem to be okay, I just cannot stop worrying.
I hope this is okay to post I just wanted to have a platform in which I can talk to people who may be feeling the same and what do you do to overcome this constant anxiety?
I'm having a little boy and I feel that I cannot become excited as I'm worried about losing him.

FirstMondayInMay · 02/08/2023 11:09

Had my 20 week scan this morning and my gut instinct was right, it’s a boy🩵

Mushroo · 02/08/2023 11:28

Ah congrats @FirstMondayInMay !! It’s so nice to hear all these scans going well.

Lavender2020 · 02/08/2023 11:34

Congrats @FirstMondayInMay that's great news!💙

I have a feeling I'm having another girl, getting really curious now and can't wait. Happy either way and so excited to find out.

Im here googling nub/skull theories and staring at my 12wk scan photo (I know these theories are just a bit of fun) 😂

RG84 · 02/08/2023 11:47

@FirstMondayInMay congratulations on your scan and baby boy 💙 :)

Good luck to everyone else who has upcoming scans as well.

NoodleQueen90 · 02/08/2023 12:08

Congrats on the recent scans and finding out the sex 😊so exciting!
I'm waiting until birth to find out but I really don't have a feeling one way or the other...I've sort of pictured both at different times throughout. Close family all seem to think girl so we'll see if they are right come December.

NoodleQueen90 · 02/08/2023 12:08

@SummerKnight I'm so sorry to hear about your previous loss, I can't imagine how difficult that must have been. Lots of people feel anxious even without your history so don't be too hard on yourself. I'm sure all will be well this time round and you will have your little boy safe in your arms in a few months time. Sorry I can't be of more help re anxiety but it might be worth asking your midwife if there is any extra support available? It's completely understandable given the circumstances.

SMG1992 · 02/08/2023 13:12

@SummerKnight I'm so sorry to hear about your previous loss. I'm in the same boat as had a MMC in January this year and am now 21 weeks pregnant.
I feel more reassured after each scan (I've had quite a few) and am hoping when I start to feel more movements this will keep me calm too.
I would say make sure your midwife knows how you are feeling and also your partner.
Like others have said most expectant mums have the same worries as us, try not to let it ruin enjoying your pregnancy.
Your body really is incredible and is the safest place for the baby to be, as long as your are taking care of yourself (physically and mentally) that really is all you can do.
These forums are also great if you ever need to vent/ get something off of your chest as there is always someone who understands :)

Pitstop1986 · 02/08/2023 15:23

@FirstMondayInMay congratulations on your little boy!

I'm not finding out the sex, but have a longing for another girl (I already have one DD) This pregnancy has been completely different in terms of symptoms and things, which makes me think it's a boy, but I'm quite sad at the prospect that it could be a son for me!

It's strange, as when I was pregnant with my daughter I wanted a boy, as I thought that a girl would be too vulnerable in the world and I didn't want a girl who could get hurt (seems silly, I know!) but I've just fallen so much in love with my daughter, I want another one of her!

joyjoy23 · 03/08/2023 09:18

@SMG1992, you've put it perfectly - our bodies are the safest place for the baby to be. Never really thought about it that way but it's a lot more reassuring and helps you feel in control a little bit more.

Has anyone had a cervical length check? NHS or private? I find it baffling that they don't check this by default at the time of the 20-week scan.

FirstMondayInMay · 03/08/2023 11:45

Thank you all for the lovely messages!

@Pitstop1986 I totally understand how you feel! I initially thought my baby was a boy but in the last few weeks I’d convinced myself it was a girl, I think purely so I wasn’t disappointed!

EmW102 · 03/08/2023 12:08

@joyjoy23 no I haven't but have been contemplating having it done privately. My last baby was born at 34+2 after my waters broke which although increases the risk of another preterm birth; I'm past the cutoff (34 weeks) for cervical scans on nhs. Interested to hear anyone else's experience regarding this?

Oldermum84 · 03/08/2023 15:29

I've had cervical scans due to having a lletz last year. All was well.

VillageFete · 03/08/2023 17:12

Hello! Fellow December mum on board 👋🏼

I have a very complicated fertility history and it’s taken me years to get to this point. A few losses and shed loads of IVF, so i’m an absolute nervous wreck.

I won’t bore you with my long, complex history but I have a 13 (almost 14) Year old DD and 4 year old son - @Pitstop1986 If you’re having a boy, I assure you it’s incredible. It’s just “different” They bring so much love and happiness in a way you wouldn’t believe, honestly. I love my kids the exact same, but he is my special Prince 🤣 This baby is another girl, confirmed by NIPT and a few scans.

This is absolutely my 3rd and final pregnancy!

Regarding cervical length - i’m so glad it's been brought up. I’ll never understand why it’s not checked routinely?

Anyway, I had a D&C beginning of January due to another loss. I saw a top Harley Street Gynae early in March who specialised in post D&C adhesions and also IVF. Reason being, my period returned post D&C and it was really weird. I was convinced I had adhesions and then my embryo transfer wouldn’t work so I needed to check for peace of mind. He was expensive but BEST money i’ve ever spent. It was him who told me that my cervix was “Shorter than I would like” And he said to me “Your endometrium is beautiful, go and transfer your embryo, but when you hopefully fall pregnant that cervix needs keeping an eye on”

To say i’ve had a battle on my hands is an understatement. My booking in Midwife was really kind and said it’d be checked by a Consultant at 12, 16 and 20 weeks.

At my 12 week scan, it wasn’t a Consultant that checked it, it was a Sonographer. She gave a measurement of 31mm but said my cervix was poorly visualised. I then saw a Consultant who said no further action was required, that measurement was fine and that was the end of it. I wasn’t happy and still pushed for another scan. The 16 week one never came to fruition, but the Sonographer obviously scanned me abdominally at my 20w one and said she’d take a look at the cervix. She told me it was 41mm. I said it wasn’t possible, and that internal was obviously the most accurate way to check, so maybe that’s why it wasn’t what I expected. She called another Sonographer in who looked at the images and said “Yes, 41mm. Sign it off”

I pushed to see, and be scanned by a Consultant because this Harley Street guy knows what he’s talking about and it’s in my email from him that it needs checking, it’s shorter than he’d like and that’s even before a pregnancy.

After lots of eye rolling and sarky comments, I was given an appointment yesterday with a Consultant. She was absolutely fabulous, so reassuring and agreed that it needed properly looking at. Lo and behold it’s 27mm, she deemed it “borderline” There’s also funnelling. I’m not really clued up on that but Google tells me it’s not great. She put me on progesterone straight away and i’ll stay on it until 34 weeks. She wants to see me next Friday and if it’s shortened any more then we’ll have to see if a stitch is required.

This has all been a massive shock to me because my last 2 babies were carried to term. But it could be that the D&C caused this issue. Or maybe a short cervix is my norm, but the more babies you have, the riskier it can be. Either way, I’m terrified!

I would say, if you can afford it, absolutely have a private cervical scan - But I don’t want to scare anyone by saying that!! I’m just super cautious.

I keep feeling so much pressure down there, and discomfort. Not sure if that’s normal or cervix related?!!

Lillybobs86 · 03/08/2023 17:48

I had a similar experience actually a private sonographer measured mine incorrectly at 2.5cm when I was 13 weeks, Sent absolute panic for days through our family.
5 days later I had an appointment with an NHS consultant who measured it at 4.
Progesterone has kept mine stable and I'm 22 weeks and haven't needed the stitch as planned 🙏🏽
With my first child I was 1.7cm at 22 weeks and then a few days later dilating!
IC, Cervical shortening, Pre term unexpected labour is so common I really don't understand why they don't include cervical scans in the compulsory nhs scans so there would be less loses.

VillageFete · 03/08/2023 20:16

@Lillybobs86 Oh my God, did they manage to stitch you in time with your first child? It really does frighten me. Completely agree that a quick internal at 12 and 20 weeks should be mandatory. You’re laying on the bed anyway?

What length was yours when they put you on progesterone? And what dosage?

I’m due 11th December but will have to have a C section as i’ve had 2 previously (Emergency) so that’s my hospital’s policy, so I guess i’ll be taken in a week earlier, all being well.

Lillybobs86 · 03/08/2023 20:50

@VillageFete no they wouldn't stitch me as too risky, I had an Araban pessary which purely was an experiment as she had never used on patients before. But I was willing to try anything to save my daughter. It's a silicon band that goes around the cervix keeping it closed.
My body was fighting with it dilating but it held from 22 weeks till 37 weeks and I did strict bedrest all that time.
I was very lucky but again no checks or anything it was noticed incidental during private scan at 22 weeks.

In this pregnancy I had many heated discussions with them and went private for the scan but that was a mistake anyway as she measured it wrong.
Triage and labour ward refused to give me progesterone till my consultant appointment even though I had a report saying my cervix was at emergency stitch stage. (Wrong measurement anyway regardless but I found them not very empathetic)
I took it upon myself to get it and my GP issued it to get me by till my consultant appointment which was in 5 days time.
I took 800 daily then once I saw the consultant who told me cervix was at 4cm I went down to 400 a day.
So been on it since then 13 weeks, it seems to be doing its job 🙏🏽

Flowersandfloral · 04/08/2023 08:59

I’ve finally bitten the bullet and got some maternity bras! I got mine from Ann Summers (I know haha) - for those looking for a bargain one of mine was £3 in the sale and it’s sooo comfy and still looks pretty.

VillageFete · 04/08/2023 10:32

@Lillybobs86 I was told i’d only be on 200mg per day! Slightly worrying.

The hospital pharmacy has non in, but luckily I have a box left over from earlier in my pregnancy but it’s 400mg bullets.

Lillybobs86 · 04/08/2023 11:33

@VillageFete how many weeks are you now at 2.7cm?
I would use the 400g in the mean time they have kept my cervix at a stable length so they do work.
Interesting as you have had previous issues why they have put you on the lowest dose 🤔
