I had the glucose test with DS1 - imagine drinking a big capri sun with about 30tsp of sugar in it, and not even being allowed to swill your mouth out - vile. Definitely bring something to distract you, and don't count on a bed or comfy chair - I was sat in a corridor for 2 hours.

Just had a blood test with DS2 due to covid, and will have the same with this baby - there's no need for the fasting test apparently, so might be worth some of you asking if you're nauseous/can't hang around etc!

NSx · 11/05/2023 22:04

does everyone get this glucose test ?

LaVitesse2022 · 11/05/2023 22:17

I'm imagining that capri sun with loads of sugar in it plus on an empty stomach @DancingNancies 🥴 It does sound vile!

Good point on bringing something to distract ourselves. But I'm just so bloody tempted to skip it! If they changed it during covid as you say, is that really essential? I'm low risk, what would be the danger if I got gestational diabetes? Need to do some digging before I decide.

LaVitesse2022 · 11/05/2023 22:18

@NSx apparently yes, I did ask my midwife and she said all pregnant women are offered it, except if you're super young 🤷‍♀️

@LaVitesse2022 that's from the NHS website : https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/gestational-diabetes/
I wouldn't skip the glucose test if high risk. I am in the high risk categories listed so I have to book one at 28 weeks. You can discuss maybe with the midwife if there is an alternative. To be fair, it sounds like we will go through worse than this test! Hopefully at 28 weeks I am not going to be as nauseous.

katherine123x · 12/05/2023 07:32

@SillyOldBear3 have you felt anything again yet?

Smiffette · 12/05/2023 07:42

I have to have the glucose test too, already booked in for July, can't remember when exactly!

I had it last time, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and I just sat and worked through the two hours.

I made sure I had food in my car to eat as soon as it was over! That's the hardest bit, not being able to eat. Luckily my appointment is first thing in the morning.

LaVitesse2022 · 12/05/2023 08:35

@Alexandra07 I understand if you're high risk it's really not a good idea to skip it. But if you're low risk, what are the chances that you'll get diabetes? That's what I'd like to know. I checked the pregnancy data wiz Emily Oster but she's got nothing on that in her Expecting Better book.

@Smiffette appointments for the test are always first thing, but it's the 2 hours of waiting in between tests with no food that worry me :/ I've been so hungry this pregnancy, it'll be really hard to cope I'm sure.

Smiffette · 12/05/2023 08:51

@LaVitesse2022 I know I've been crazy hungry this pregnancy too! I really need to start curbing the eating so I don't balloon!!

cruciverbalista · 12/05/2023 09:10

I haven't been asked to do a glucose test 🤔

peonygirl · 12/05/2023 09:50

For all those who are worried about glucose test and are low risk, it might be worth discussing this with your midwife as glucose can easily be measured with a simple blood test. This is what the standard procedure should be so I am wondering if there might be a misunderstanding for some of you and you'd actually do just a blood test. I'd double check because I agree, if you are not at risk why putting yourself through it. If high levels of glucose are found in your bloods you'd still be able to do the full test afterwards.

Summer022 · 12/05/2023 11:22

16 week appointment done and she let me hear the baby’s heartbeat. 🥹 Omg I felt so emotional hearing it for the first time. She does suspect a UTI so is going to investigate for me and give antibiotics if needed but she said it was only showing a small amount of protein in my sample (still needs to be checked) Starting to really feel more real now and tomorrow we’ll be able to find out if this baby is a boy or girl. 🥹

firstlittlefrazzleontheway · 12/05/2023 12:16

My 16 week appointment is today (it's a bit late as I'm 18+2), I'm at work this morning and I've just been asked for the first time "are you pregnant?" Weirdly being asked that makes it seem even more real now- I think it's because I feel like I must actually look pregnant now and not like I've eaten too much

NSx · 12/05/2023 12:44

@Summer022 I just had my 16w midwife appt today too, I also heard the heartbeat 💗 and she let me record it to send to my partner and mum 🥹🩵🩷 …
Nothing was mentioned to me about a glucose test ? When should it be done?

I got my appts for my 22 week midwife appt, my whopping cough appt , 20 w scan and also my anti d inj appt. Nothing else booked ?

NSx · 12/05/2023 12:55

@ttcttc I finally got my screening results back today at my appt ….

1 in 23,831 for DS
1 in 100,000 for P&E … she said those are really good results so thank God. So annoying I had to wait so long for these 🙄

LaVitesse2022 · 12/05/2023 14:09

@peonygirl my midwife definitely mentioned the glucose test as she said bloods had to be taken fasted and then I'd have to drink the sugary thing. She said the letter with the date would come in the post but appt would be between 26-28 weeks. Received nothing so far. But great to know they'd pick high glucose levels in a standard blood test. That means it'll still be monitored even if I choose not to do the glucose one.

@NSx @Summer022 that's brilliant that you got to hear your baby's heartbeat! I haven't yet :(

Anyone else waiting till the 20-week scan to find out whether it's a boy or girl? I can't wait and all the messages here are making me feel like everyone else has found out already! 😅2 weeks to go!

peonygirl · 12/05/2023 14:14

@LaVitesse2022 yap, mine said the same but also that they send everyone aged 35+ because the complications if you develop gestational diabetes and go untreated are far worse than doing the test and know early. My hospital sends me online letters with appointments and this one has been booked for 25th July.

My 20 week scan is only on the 13th June so I decided to book a 16 week scan, also because of the bleed two days go. I should know in 10 days if it is a boy or a girl :)

LaVitesse2022 · 12/05/2023 14:18

Also, has anyone done the bloods to find out baby's rhesus type? Mine have come back as "report null" and I've no idea what it means! My next appt is actually with GP at 24 weeks but my GP doesn't book so far in advance so haven't got a date yet.

LaVitesse2022 · 12/05/2023 14:21

@peonygirl hum, I'll be 35 in September so really at the borderline. But if they check your bloods regularly surely it wouldn't go undetected? I think I'll need to discuss this with my midwife. Problem is my next appt will be with GP so next I'll see my midwife will be mid July... 🤔

iloveeggs · 12/05/2023 14:29

I had mine done but baby came back as rhesus negative too. Maybe contact your midwife?

cruciverbalista · 12/05/2023 14:49

@LaVitesse2022 I am waiting til the 20 week scan. One week from today, can't wait!
@NSx congrats on finally getting your low risk results!

Wondering if I haven't been pinned for the glucose thing as under 35 and BMI is below the line. I'll mention it to my midwife at the 24 week appointment.

NSx · 12/05/2023 15:28

@LaVitesse2022 it was so lovely to hear and also nice I have a little voice recording of it 🩵🩵.
I’m also rhesus negative, I was not offered to check my babies blood type I was booked in for my antid in august ??
@peonygirl I’m 35 just now and there was no mention of this test to me 🙄 should I be having a blood sugar test 😅

peonygirl · 12/05/2023 15:58

@NSx ha, I only said that to learn how old everyone is :) kidding. Look, that's what my midwife told me, but every person is different and it will have its own individual journey. I am sure the medical professionals are best equipped to evaluate the risks and who needs what. I'd say if in doubt, check with midwife/GP/consultant and they will explain. I ask quite a lot of questions so often get told a lot of stuff which is why they might share more than normal.

LaVitesse2022 · 12/05/2023 16:11

@iloveeggs I've just rang but no answer. Will need to try again on Monday. It's just really bugging me the 'null' bit - should be a positive or negative straightforward result.

@cruciverbalista ah good luck! Mine is 2 weeks from today, so a week after yours :) Do you have a gut feeling about what you're having?

@NSx from what I read and what my midwife told me the recommendation is now for Rh negative women to first do a blood test to find out baby's blood type before having the antiD injection. If your baby is negative too there's no need for it.
