Wasn't sure where to post this.

Have just seen the bloke on our local news who has set up this petition.

here

His wife was showing signs of miscarrying, went to our local A and E on a Friday night, were told to go home and come back to the early pregnancy unit on ....Tuesday Were told that there was no one there who could help them.

Sadly she did lose the baby

Thought we could boost the number of signatures.
Thanks.

Just realised that the full story is given on the petition in more detail.

it says on it the deadline to sign up was feb 11th. are we too late?

Lampi · 15/02/2008 19:03

11 Feb 2009 - we've got plenty of time!

Lampi · 15/02/2008 19:08

My heart goes out to that couple. I've signed up to the petition. The same thing happened to me last July but at a different hospital - St Marys, London ie. First pregnancy with bleeding on a Friday, but the A&E department couldn't help so I had to wait until Monday to find out I'd miscarried. (I'm pregnant again - 23 weeks now though and all going well so far )

I don't really understand this one. I know it is awful and that in an ideal world miscarrying women would be saved the trauma of waiting to find out whether they are miscarrying or not, but surely once you start to miscarry in the early stages then there is no 'treatment' that can be given to save the pregnancy ? Surely the only 'treatment' given (on those ocassions where it is required) is a D&C ?

Obviously I am happy to be corrected on this issue.

kiskidee · 16/02/2008 09:01

some miscarriages will be ectopic pg and if these cases go undiagnosed in A&E then it can become a matter of life and death for the mother. A&E should have the facility to at the very least rule out this possibility?

Dear Kiskidee,

You have a very good point here. I have had two ectopics in the past and in fact on my second ectopic I had to fight to get the doctor to agree to send me by taxi to hopsital which was over 1/2 an hour away. I am going to sign this now.
My thoughts are with that couple.

newbishad · 16/02/2008 10:19

Dear Fatzack,

I have just signed the petition but I think should contact AIMS, a voluntary body to improve maternity services in UK, if this hasn't been done already. The organisation should be aware of this case and also be figting it in Dewsberry and other parts of the country. There is no excuse for a couple being treated like that. M/C / ectopic pregnancy is painful enough without poor services on top.
Best wishes...Newbishad

I've signed it.
Is it unethical to put DH on as well as he has a different email, I'm sure he won't mind!

fatzak · 16/02/2008 10:32

I've just done that too Yorky!!

these cutbacks are not just affecting women in the first trimester of pg. on a mailing list where i linked this petition, a woman described losing her 20 wker (live birth) after she was sent home from a&e, being told she had a water infection - which at this stage of pg is dangerous in itself.
