@Chanteuse this was my list. Only thing missing really is:

cot (I was given a family heirloom one so didn’t put it on the list)

cot top changer (wish I’d got one and will be getting one this time)

cot mobile

pram toy (totally worthwhile but so many people don’t get one)

muslin cloths (very useful)

Baby clothes hangers

Storage baskets/units you may need for baby’s room.

P.s. I didn’t buy most of the post baby stuff until he was crawling but it’s useful to have as a list anyway.

Alexandra07 · 12/04/2023 18:47

@PrimarilyParented thanks for the list! I have to check the one I made for my first one. Just to add, from my experience some things come in sets you don't have to buy them individually, e.g. pram rain cover and pram, my changing bag came with the pram. I got also a few things for free to try that was useful, nipple cream and nappy cream.
I used a nail file instead of infant nail clipper

I also had to buy:
Baby monitor
Boogie sucker - not sure how it's called but when they are small and they have a cold you can remove the snot to help them
Grolight - it gives off a very faint light, very good for middle of the night wake ups when you don't want to turn on the lights. You can use it with your existing light.
Breast milk bags for storage
Breast pump
obviously the last two only if you plan to breastfeed

Chanteuse · 12/04/2023 19:37

@PrimarilyParented thank you so much! That looks like a bloody delightful spreadsheet too 😍

@LaVitesse2022 - re: the bath we were passed a foldable bath for my first and still use it 3 years later. I would say it was one of the better bits of kit we got. It has a baby insert that you can set them on that was fine, but someone gave us a more robust bit of plastic and that was great until baby got too big for it maybe at 6 month. The more robust but of plastic was huge, though, and one of the very early things newborns outgrow so they are super easy to find second-hand and pass on to other new parents.

You can definitely use the sink at first but it is weirdly anxiety inducing to put a newborn into the water.

@LaVitesse2022 - ah, sorry, seems I missed a couple pages and didn't.realise you already received a ton of bath advice already.

My BIL is a radiologist, and has a small ultrasound machine at home. Guess who got a small peek at baby today! 😍

@Needtobuildabridge that's so lucky, especially as he will know what he's doing!!

I had my scan today, so lovely seeing the little wiggly baby in there! Wasn't playing ball though and couldn't get the neck measurement so going back Friday. Sonographer said everything else looked normal though. Dated me 2 days further along, so now a whole week ahead just like what happened with DD.

So I'm now 13+2 EDD 16.10.23! Feel a lot more relieved seeing baby in there today. DH and I both think it's a boy.

LWestYorks · 12/04/2023 20:41

@SnookyPook oh I’m glad they’ve got you in tomorrow, is it still happening? I’ve not had any today - it’s so weird happens for a few days then stops.

ForeverAndEvers · 12/04/2023 21:04

Not fully managing to keep up with all the updated but so lovely to see everyone’s pics. Congrats to all that have had a recent scan.

Is anyone else getting nose bleeds? Randomly had one this evening. I had them with my first pregnancy so not unexpected but a bit of a pain! I remember last time being stuck in the loos at work for nearly an hour trying to get one to stop so not looking forward to that again. Pregnancy is glamorous, isn’t it?!

Ss32 · 12/04/2023 21:14

@ForeverAndEvers oh I’ve been having nosebleeds too already and had them last pregnancy. I used to get them in the shower and remember once being stuck in the shower for about 45 minutes waiting for it to stop so I didn’t make a mess of the bathroom! 😂

Mldn · 12/04/2023 21:28

Does anybody know the process of booking a harmony/nipt test? My 12 week scan is 27th April when I’ll be 12w4d. I’m so paranoid that they may not be able to get the nuchal measurement & ask me to come back the following week or so. I go on holiday on 2nd May for just over 2 weeks. So when I come back I’ll be almost 16 weeks. So too late for the nuchal measurement, so I believe? I just wondered, if they couldn’t get the reading, would it be likely I could book in within a day privately, as in to go on the Friday or Saturday before I go away? Or do you have to book further in advance? I’m in London. God I’m so paranoid. I didn’t even realise these things were a thing until I read this thread! x

ForeverAndEvers · 12/04/2023 21:30

@Ss32 glad it’s not just me, but definitely a total pain when you just get stuck trying to get them to stop for ages! I remember getting a lot at work before I’d told anyone I was pregnant and colleagues finding it increasingly odd.

SnookyPook · 12/04/2023 21:45

@LWestYorks I think it's stopped for now but I put a panty liner in this morning and had a bit more then. I felt a tiny bit fraudulent ringing up as I don't think it's much compared to what some go through but all online advice says to call about any tinged discharge etc. They were nice on the phone and didn't really seem bothered. She was about to fob me off but I think had second thoughts because my 12wk scan isn't until I'm almost 14wks so I think she thought best be safe and check. I am glad as my anxiety was going up a bit.

Glad yours has stopped for now! Also good that you've already seen a healthy baby at your scan so hopefully it's just random. X

DancingNancies · 12/04/2023 21:48

@Mldn the NT test can be done between 11 and 14 weeks so you should be fine! I had my 12w scan yesterday and they dated me 13+1 and despite baby being very wriggly, she managed to measure it a few times and take an average. With DC2 I only had the blood test at 16w as mentioned above, and that was accurate at predicting risks too.

You might get a next day private scan, but you'd have to say you hadn't had any NHS scans for over a week prior as they like to leave that long between them!

VictoriaBlossom · 12/04/2023 21:56

These 12 week scans are making me so impatient.

Both myself and @overgrowngrass are booked for Monday, at the same hospital but a few hours apart. I can't wait til Monday!!

Going for a meal with really close friends on Friday night and because we haven't told the in laws, OH doesn't want to tell the friends-

Who can help with the best excuses which are believable?
I feel like saying I've got lady issues and taking antibiotics- technically a baby is to do with the female reproductive organs, therefore a "lady issue" 😂

Any other help with an w use that isn't too much of a blatant lie to a close friend? I really don't want to lie to them, and I'm on the edge of just not going so I don't have to lie. But then she might worry more 🤦🏽‍♀️

DancingNancies · 12/04/2023 22:22

@VictoriaBlossom I told people I'd had an awful cold (true) and still hadn't got my sense of taste/smell back properly so wasn't going to waste good wine/money when I couldn't enjoy it!

DH barely ever drinks so if offered I usually say yes, but no one seemed to bat an eyelid at that excuse - might have to ask if they think I'm tight too once we've told them 😂

Saturnsmoon · 12/04/2023 22:23

@VictoriaBlossom I had a boozy brunch recently and just said I had a uti and was on antibiotics so not drinking. Nobody wants to talk about uti’s so that seemed to stop any further inquiries and didn’t lead to as many raised eyebrows as when I told another set of friends I was doing dry February 😏.

DancingNancies · 12/04/2023 22:24

Also, you can drink on quite a few antibiotics now, even if not ideal to, so that excuse just sounds like an excuse now I think!

MeganC104 · 12/04/2023 22:37

@ForeverAndEvers nosebleeds here too! I've had 3 so far but I get a metallic taste quite a lot too. Never had them first pregnancy.

Alexandra07 · 13/04/2023 04:22

@Mldn if you are flexible to travel you should be able to book a nipt 1-2 days in advance. There are a lot of places in London. You are right to think that 16 weeks will be too late for nt measurement, from what I read here. There are some places that offer only the nipt blood test, no scan and usually have more appointment slots because taking only blood is quicker. I would make a list of close by clinics that offer the nipt in advance so I can book immediately after my 12 week scan if needed. I hope you won't have to!

Saturnsmoon · 13/04/2023 04:26

@DancingNancies thats good to know - going to have to come up with a better excuse for my dinner plans tomorrow then 😂

so I just had a call from the private clinic that did my third!!! Nipt blood withdrawal last week to say that I need to come in again and have it redone because they forgot to send the bloods off before the BHs and now they can’t be used. I’m honestly losing so much sleep over having two inconclusive results on my first two NIPTs and having changed providers I was really hoping to get the results of the SAFE test by tomorrow but now I have to have it redone which will entail another week of waiting. I’m almost 15w and really starting struggling with the unknown of it all. Massively regret going for the NIPT at this stage as it meant not having the combined test (based abroad) and I feel like some results would have been better than none. Sorry just venting I know it’s all just bad luck really and inconclusive doesn’t necessarily mean there’s anything wrong but I just can’t let myself get excited before I’ve had some kind of reassurance.

ForeverAndEvers · 13/04/2023 05:46

@MeganC104 I can’t fully remember but for me last time they mainly occurred before 20 weeks I think so hopefully it’s not an all pregnancy thing for us this time.

@VictoriaBlossom I have my 12 week scan on Monday too but not until right at the end of the day.

overgrowngrass · 13/04/2023 06:30

@VictoriaBlossom thanks for tagging me, I had completely lost you all and couldn’t find the latest thread…

I managed to get Covid and a UTI simultaneously last week so that was fun 😐😂 And in the meantime we’d moved onto the next thread.

@Saturnsmoon that’s terrible, you must be so frustrated!

Don't get plug covers, or at least not the kind that look like a plastic plug.

UK sockets have a built in safety mechanism - putting something into the top "Earth" pin open shutters and turns the socket live.

Without them the shutters are closed.

Using that type is a fire hazard for this reason but if they are pulled out slightly (but not fully) then child can access a live socket.
