No, I refuse to jump on board with very obvious boys names being used for girls. E.g. James.

Some names are fine for both (Riley, Ashley etc) but Ryan is not one of them IMO.

tara66 · 25/01/2023 21:50

NO - do get a grip.

ChipsAreLife · 25/01/2023 21:51

@R0ckets I went to school with a boy named Stacey so it can work the other way round all though less common.

He was teased relentlessly and was quite a 'hard' type

whattodo2019 · 25/01/2023 21:52

Awful name for a boy let alone a girl...

xprincessxjanetx · 25/01/2023 21:52

Yes, but Stacey was initially a boys name anyway. Although, rarely used for them nowadays as it sounds too feminine.

Ryan was never a girls name.

ChipsAreLife · 25/01/2023 21:54

@xprincessxjanetx oh ok didn't know that. I was born in the 80s so only knew lots of girl Staceys

Didn't that used to be a boys name though so kind of defeating your own argument. Yes it's now more commonly used for girls as it sounds feminine like Tracey, Lacey and Casey etc but it was male name.

felulageller · 25/01/2023 21:55

I imagine it'll become a girls name in the future as it sounds just as feminine as names like Bailey Noah, Harris, Morgan, Carmen, Skyler.

But probably for Americans in the meantime.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 25/01/2023 21:56

Oh gosh no.....awful!

ChipsAreLife · 25/01/2023 21:57

@R0ckets I had no idea it was, sorry! Obviously no one else did as we all thought it was slightly strange.

ozymandiusking · 25/01/2023 21:58

There are so many beautiful girls names available, why on earth would you choose a rather boring boys name? Or any boys name for that matter.

CastleTower · 25/01/2023 21:58

Ryan means king anyway.

Riona or Rionach comes from "queen" I think.

YesYesAllGood · 25/01/2023 21:59

I knew a Ria at school (pronounced Ry-a as opposed to Ree-a).

Monsterjam · 25/01/2023 22:00

I’ve said this before on many posts. As a female with a very traditional boys name o vote No! A life time of explaining your name, people expecting the opposite gender and general confusion is a PITA!
oh and bullying at school.

Kanaloa · 25/01/2023 22:02

I think it’s a really nice name for a little boy. It isn’t a girls name though.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 25/01/2023 22:02

Oh don't.
I have an early 20s male colleague called Page. He has literally spent his entire life " saying, I am a male as yes that's my name"

Equally had an older female colleague called Darrell. Spent her life saying yes that's me and I'm a woman

HundredMilesAnHour · 25/01/2023 22:03

I have a female friend called Ryann (same pronounciation as Ryan). She's from California and as far as I'm aware, her name has never been an issue. Never even crossed my mind that it might be despite being friends for over 30 years.

CantFindTheBeat · 25/01/2023 22:05

@MrsTerryPratchett

I believe the wrestler, Big Daddy, was called Shirley.

Ashley is very unisex. As is Leslie/Lesley.

Not forgetting, A Boy Named Sue!

SparkyBlue · 25/01/2023 22:08

Ryan means king or little king so a totally masculine name. So for a girl it sounds odd to my ears. There are lots of Rians around here which is the Irish language version of Ryan. Also Ryan is a very common surname around here so it wouldn't appeal to me as a first name.

Shirley was also originally a boy's name. It really only usually goes one way.

SugarNspices · 25/01/2023 22:11

100% no

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/01/2023 22:12

Also Ashley was more commonly a boys name to start.

Really really. Flows one way and it's fairly obvious if you think about it why. It's just sexism.

WordtoYoMumma · 25/01/2023 22:13

Rhian or Ryanne but not Ryan.

LondonLovie · 25/01/2023 22:14

If you like masculine names you could go for Dylan. I know a couple of female Dylan's.

Ryan not so much
