I like it, even considered it myself but had boys and did’t like for them.

If I had a girl I would have called her Michael :)

I hope you’d have called yourself Michael for a month first.

JudyGemstone · 25/01/2023 21:13

My teen daughter has a female friend called Ryann, pronounced Ryan.

it’s fine

I really like it ! I know a girl called Rhian but is pronounced "Ryan". I thought it was Ree-ann but was corrected.

The Welsh pronunciation is Ree-an (with a bit of a Rhhhhh at the start). But definitely ee, not eye, as the first vowel sound.

Guess her parents had only seen it written down!

MissMaple82 · 25/01/2023 21:14

Oh god, please don't!!

MoleyAndGeorge · 25/01/2023 21:14

I work with a female James.

Every time we go to a meeting with people she doesn’t already know she has to explain, and tells me she’s sick of it.

She’s changed her email to include her (feminine) middle name, so it happens less now now but is still a thing.

Absolutly not something I would inflict on my daughter.

BitOutOfPractice · 25/01/2023 21:15

I don’t even like it for a boy, let alone a girl

maddiemookins16mum · 25/01/2023 21:15

Ffs - why not just call her Barry.

Bet she wouldn’t.

Perfect28 · 25/01/2023 21:16

Remember OP, you must signal the correct genitalia from the moment they are born in the form of a name.

SoftSheen · 25/01/2023 21:17

Nope, Ryan is a male name.

How about either Rhian or Robyn?

sofasofa42 · 25/01/2023 21:17

You could be hugely chav and call them Rion,Ryan though is a boys name. Think about the future of this kid rather then you seeming edgy.

Lokidottir · 25/01/2023 21:17

I know a Ryan and it really suits her!

Judgyjudgy · 25/01/2023 21:18

I actually quite like it! But yeah maybe everyone will just get confused. Could you spell it differently if you like the sound

CantFindTheBeat · 25/01/2023 21:19

I love masculine names for girls, so it would be a yes from me!

In the US, as PPs have said, it's very common to have unisex names.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 25/01/2023 21:21

It's a no from me.

Are your boys called Michelle and Jane?

No? Weird, why not?

And boys get feminine names?

If not, why not?

LemonSwan · 25/01/2023 21:36

No way. Rye might be male (haven’t checked) but think that’s more acceptable.

Well pointed out!

Nope, even weirder than that! 😂

I really don’t see the big deal. It is a name, some like, some loathe. I am not precious about gender convention, particularly when some names are quite frankly unisex, even if uncommon in the UK.

It is also super easy to add pronouns if you wanted (I can see this suggestion landing like a lead balloon on MN 😂).

Indeed it's funny isn't it that boys still get masculine names and it's only girls who have to suffer the frustration at being lumbered with a name from the other sex.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/01/2023 21:41

Nope, even weirder than that!

Weirder, or actually 'girls' names.

IME this only really ever goes one way. Girls are promoted to the heady heights of boyhood. Boys are never demoted to girlhood.

thegreylady · 25/01/2023 21:46

I used to teach a Chinese girl called Ryan .
The nearest British equivalent I can think of is the Welsh Rhian.
