Hey all,

Now I know Mumsnet can be a judgmental place, but even when people are judgmental, I actually think reading other opinions are really important.

I'm getting the whooping cough vaccine today (27 weeks ) and im just worried, I can't find anything to show any evidence of baby being harmed from this. But has anyone had any issues with it in regards to your pregnancy? Do people recommend this vaccine?

Why are you worried? Vaccines are designed to protect you and your baby. There are rigorous trials etc. Plus if someone says they had this vaccine and something happened you have no idea if it’s vaccine related. Talk to your health professional rather than strangers online.

xttcbabyno1x · 16/01/2023 08:05

@Wolfiefan what is it with people like you? If you don't agree with something I'm posting , ignore and don't reply. I like to get opinions, health professionals won't say a bad word about a vaccine .

Well not all vaccines are equal but that one is routinely given in pregnancy for
quite some time and seems very safe. I got it because of a dog bite …

xttcbabyno1x · 16/01/2023 08:09

@MintyFreshOne thank you! That's good to hear, I think that's my concern is when it's not routinely given etc! Thanks for that :)

People like me? People who don’t go looking for scaremongering health stories and make educated decisions based on real evidence??

BackOnTheBandWagon · 16/01/2023 08:10

The whooping cough vaccine is given in pregnancy specifically to protect your baby immediately after they're born and before their first vaccines. It's not actually for you, it's for your baby, so how on earth could it harm the baby??

It also protects against diphtheria, polio and tetanus. The tetanus will be why you were given it after a dog bite

Never had a issue with 2 pregnancies or heard of any, I’ve known a mum who didn’t get vaccinated against it and her child had it very bad and could never form enamel properly on their teeth! Which they suspect is due to being very unwell due to whooping cough! I’m also pregnant and never had a covid vaccine and dreading the pressure to get one! Have you had any? That’s one thing I’m not for and definitely won’t get! X

Not true. I didn't give my DC the fluenz for example. And don't get the flu vaccine myself (yet).
That aside, in several years of administering the pertussis vaccine to pregnant women I have never heard of a single problem aside from the sore arm.
Have heard of several newborns dying of it though who had unvaccinated mothers.
Practice nurse.

Kladebs · 16/01/2023 08:18

I can't remember which child I was pregnant with, but I think it was around the time it became routine.
I ummed and ahhed over it for ages, but had it in the end. All kids are fine, so whichever one it was wasn't effected at all by the vaccine.
I'm having it this time too x

xttcbabyno1x · 16/01/2023 08:20

@Ano321 oh gosh that's terrible!! I haven't had the COVID vaccines either and where the news are coming out with stories about it now, it has made me concerned about vaccines in general hence the post! Thank you for your response it was really helpful xx

I'm due to get this in a few weeks and feel confident it's the right thing to do. I'm a historian and found in old public health records (pre vaccine) whooping cough outbreaks left swathes of children with permenant hearing loss. Coughing can be so violent that children fracture their ribs. Some babies can die from it. The vaccine has saved hundreds of thousands of lives and has shown to be very safe. They don't mess around with medications or vaccines with pregnancy so I would take comfort that it is safe and will protect your baby.

Twizbe · 16/01/2023 08:22

Whooping cough can kill newborns. The reason pregnant woman are given the vaccine is because it passes to baby and gives them protection from day one.

xttcbabyno1x · 16/01/2023 08:23

@cptartapp thank you! All health professionals I've spoken to haven't had a bad word to say about any vaccine so thank you for your reply!

Covid vaccine and flu vaccine I haven't had but whooping cough was the one I was going to have because of the protection for baby! But with the news about the COVID vaccines it's just made me cautious x

What did @Wolfiefan do wrong ? 😂 you asked an opinion. She put your mind at rest.

Wolfiefan · 16/01/2023 08:25

Ah you’re an anti vax loon. Looking for “reasons” not to vaccinate rather than looking for a reasoned discussion. I have no time for this nonsense.

MrsMorrisey · 16/01/2023 08:26

I can totally understand your hesitation and if I was going through having babies again, I'd be conflicted.
All my kids have had all of their vaccinations. They are all teens now.
I think we just did what was recommended and didn't question.
My third child nearly died from the Rotatech vaccine administered at 12 months for gastro.
Not sure if you have that in UK.

This was documented as an adverse reaction.
We all had whooping cough vaccine with no issues. I had it when third child was just born. All fine.
I have not had and will never have the Covid vaccine though, nor my children.

“Do people recommend this vaccine?”

Yes, the NHS does.

Cookerhood · 16/01/2023 08:27

What is this "news" about Covid vaccines? That they have saved hundreds of thousands of lives? That's a good thing, surely?

HorsingAround2022 · 16/01/2023 08:27

Hi, I’ve had the whooping cough vaccine in both my pregnancies, the last vaccine was two weeks ago.

I’ve never had any side effects from it and my baby was born perfectly healthy and my current pregnancy is showing to be low risk and everything with the baby is great.

i’ve also had a fourth covid vaccine whilst pregnant as I know people who have caught covid when pregnant and been really poorly and I’ve had the flu vaccine, which I also had during my first pregnancy.

So much research goes into any vaccine before it’s given to anyone, especially pregnant women and children, so I see all of them as very, very low risk options with a lot of benefits to both mum and baby.

ProserpinaProserpina · 16/01/2023 08:27

’People’ do recommend this vaccine. The Department of Health for an example of ‘people’, rather than strangers on the internet.

7Worfs · 16/01/2023 08:29

In my first pregnancy I was so uneasy about medication I refused treatment for HG and didn’t even take paracetamol. I relaxed a lot in my second pregnancy.

Most drugs have a blanket “consult your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding” - it’s there because no one does drug trials on pregnant women, so even safe drugs can make pregnant women very worried.

Wrt to vaccines - I didn’t accept any in pregnancy, but that’s because I weighed in my personal circumstances.
Data suggests the whooping cough one is totally safe in pregnancy.

I wouldn’t take the flu and Covid one if you paid me. Midwives spent a lot of time scaremongering me with stories of dying women, until I asked them to drop it.

I ended up catching Covid in the second trimester, the fatigue was bad but I recovered fairly quickly.

xttcbabyno1x · 16/01/2023 08:31

@Wolfiefan anti Vaxxer? I've had all of my jabs apart from the COVID and flu vaccines so yeah I am totally against them.

I'm pregnant for the first time with concerns, valid concerns too. I have every right to ask others opinions without speaking directly to the midwife about it.
