Hey all,

Now I know Mumsnet can be a judgmental place, but even when people are judgmental, I actually think reading other opinions are really important.

I'm getting the whooping cough vaccine today (27 weeks ) and im just worried, I can't find anything to show any evidence of baby being harmed from this. But has anyone had any issues with it in regards to your pregnancy? Do people recommend this vaccine?

People like me? People who don’t go looking for scaremongering health stories and make educated decisions based on real evidence??

You aren’t going to reassure anyone with this kind of attitude you know.

Trust in vaccines is at a low point for obvious reasons, so you would do well to take people’s concerns seriously

xttcbabyno1x · 16/01/2023 08:33

@7Worfs thank you!! I was worried about medication too but have been lucky I haven't needed to take any so apart for a water infection at the very beginning.

I wouldn't have the COVID vaccines either but whooping cough was the one I would take , however with the news about the COVID vaccines it's made me panic about others that's all x

@MrsMorrisey thank you so much for your reply! It's really helpful!

Agree about the COVID vaccine but seems to be from what most are saying here that they've all pretty much had the whooping cough vaccines. I suppose it's been around for a long time which eases my mind x

I would have the flu vaccine as well. I sadly know someone who had to have a TFMR at 23 weeks due to complications caused by her having flu in the first trimester. I've also just had flu and I've never been so unwell in my life.

Twizbe · 16/01/2023 08:40

I've had all my covid ones too. The technology for those vaccines has been in development for over 10 years. We were lucky that it was so advanced when covid hit. All they had to do was plug in the genetic data for covid.

It's not a new vaccine.

CrunchyCarrot · 16/01/2023 08:42

I don't see anything wrong with @Wolfiefan's reply, OP. You did after all state that even when people are judgmental, I actually think reading other opinions are really important.

Whooping cough is nasty and I think it would be for the best to get the vaccine. You shouldn't allow the scaremongering that has surrounded the Covid jabs to cloud your judgement. This has been one of the worst outcomes of this pandemic, in my view, the general erosion of trust in already proven vaccines like whooping cough and measles.

xttcbabyno1x · 16/01/2023 08:44

Yes people are judgmental but it's the comments like "speak to your health professionals" like I haven't already done that, but I want opinions from others rather than just from the midwife who of course it's her job to say to have them all

Had this in both pregnancies with no symptoms but for a sore arm for a day or two. Both babies healthy and now 2 and 4. The whooping cough vaccine in pregnancy passes immunity to the baby for a short time until they can be vaccinated. I had whooping cough in my 30s and it was horrendous. I coughed so hard I vomited, soiled myself, and pulled a muscle in my ribs. It went on for months and was terrifying when I had a coughing fit and my throat closed and I couldn't breathe in. I can't imagine how much more terrifying it would have been in a newborn - and it can be deadly for babies. Having the vaccine is the best thing you can do to protect your unborn child (and if you're not convinced on this, Google Light for Riley)

MrsMorrisey · 16/01/2023 08:45

OP I had my arse handed to me on a plate on MN and in real life about my choice about Covid vaccine.
It's your life and your baby so whatever sits right with you is what is right for you.
Enjoy your pregnancy.

7Worfs · 16/01/2023 08:45

OP you can Google each vaccine and see what year it was introduced for pregnant women and what is the % take-up each year.
Same for childhood vaccines, e.g. MMR average annual take up at 12mo is around 90% for the last 15-20 years. That to me is very safe.
I haven’t looked up whooping cough in pregnancy but I think it’s very high take-up every year.

MintyFreshOne · 16/01/2023 08:45

kind of blaming the victim here. Public health did not make good judgements about the vaccine rollout and this hesitancy is the direct result.

xttcbabyno1x · 16/01/2023 08:45

@orion678 that sounds absolutely terrible for an adult let alone a newborn baby 🥺 I will take a look at this now - thank you!

@MrsMorrisey thank you, appreciate this! I also got some stick for not wanting the COVID vaccine. I will do some more research over the course of the day but whooping cough is the only vaccine I've considered x

This is the problem with asking for “opinions” from random people (usually idiots, myself included) on the internet. You’re bamboozled with “facts” (usually bastardised versions of something to suit that persons agenda) by people who can barely string a sentence together.

Why don’t people listen to the professionals? Your HCP knows best so why aren’t you listening to them? I feel sorry for the children who miss out on life saving vaccines because their parents have been sucked down the paranoia rabbit hole.

Hopefully you don’t catch covid in your 3rd trimester. There was more than 1 woman in an induced coma because of covid complications when I was having my DD.

You are not wrong.
Pre-Covid I had blind trust in medical professionals.
Now I want all the details beforehand and have discussions before accepting treatment.

Their handling of Covid completely undermined them. I hope their Pfizer shares were worth it.

keepaweatheredeye · 16/01/2023 08:52

No idea why you're being so rude to one poster who gave you actual helpful advice.

We don't pander here, OP. Be responsible and get your vaccines. Flu is also a standard pregnancy vaccine, if you choose not to have it and then get the flu, well, that's your problem.

Triselly · 16/01/2023 08:56

@xttcbabyno1x I agree with you re happy to be vaccinated but never had any covid/flu shots. Despite all the pressure, there are more people that refused it than one might think. I am glad I never got it - I know two healthy young men who collapsed with heart problems immediately after getting it, and am not convinced of its long term safety. The whooping cough one seems much older and more reliable though?

1994girl · 16/01/2023 08:57

I had this vaccine at 29 weeks. Chill.

"We don't pander here OP. "

In other words, we don't accept a different view.

Bound to happen.....

Wishiwasatailor · 16/01/2023 09:02

@7Worfs yep I quit my nursing job because of my Pfizer shares 🤣

xttcbabyno1x · 16/01/2023 09:04

@Triselly exactly!! My OH's uncle had the COVID a vaccine he was very healthy never any issues and soon after had cardiac problems. Hence my concerns

But as you say the whooping cough vaccine has been around since 2012 and no issues seem to appear on the studies x

OP posts:
Wavescrashingonthebeach · 16/01/2023 09:05

I had the whooping cough vaccine when preg. No issues whatsoever. Its been going for years and is widely accepted as safe, compared to how awful and deadly whooping cough is.

I see no reason whatsoever for me to have flu or covid vaccines I'm 30's, good weight and robust immune system. I've already had covid at least once (positive pcr test). I haven't had a single cough or cold this winter despite regularly being coughed on by sick kids. My toddler son hasn't had a single cough in his life, only the odd little cold.

keepaweatheredeye · 16/01/2023 09:05

@MrsMorrisey no, I said we don't pander. Vaccines save millions of lives per year. It is a cold hard fact that you are putting yourself / other people / your family / your precious unborn child at risk of you don't have the recommended vaccines.

MrsMorrisey · 16/01/2023 09:07

Um you did. Read your post.
