I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

I've been taking Ondanestron for 4 days now and I actually do feel a little better. No sickness so far, still feeling nauseas when I'm due a dose. I'm a bit nervous taking this though, I've been getting mild stomach cramps mostly in the middle of the night and I haven't had a bowel movement yet. Probably not surprising since I was constipated before taking this as I haven't been able to eat fruit or veg for weeks.

Newmother321 · 04/07/2023 20:04

Hi all, jumping on the thread. I had bad hyperemesis with my first pregnancy and I've just found out im pregnant now with my second.
Obviously this fills me with absolute fear and dread that I'm going to suffer HG again - which I can't even begin to imagine how bad that will be with a toddler!?

How many weeks were you all when yours started?

Last time I was 5 weeks but I'm 6 weeks today and still feeling ok (touch wood and cross all your fingers and toes).

Golaz · 04/07/2023 20:49

Hi all, how is HG diagnosed/ defined? I feel nauseated all day and am throwing up multiple times per day - including first thing when I wake. Everything makes me feel sick. Eating doesn’t help. Part of my mind wants to eat and the other part of it wants to run to the toilet at the thought of any food. Whatever I eat comes up. debilitating and I can’t concentrate on anything else. Is this just typical preg sickness? I’m 6+5 today

Newmother321 · 04/07/2023 21:34

@golaz I used this chart and had a score of 15 so I was pretty certain I had HG and contacted my doctor to prescribe some medication and also sign me off work (I wasn't able to move from bed).

I'd call your GP to discuss x

I scored 13-14. Do you know what the cut off is?

Newmother321 · 05/07/2023 11:08

@Golaz it looks like 13 and above is classed as severe so pretty likely you also have hyperemesis and could benefit from some medication.
I know how horrendous it is and honestly the medication will make such a big difference x

Golaz Welcome. Sorry you are suffering. It sounds like Hyperemesis to me. That chart from Newmother321 is a good idea. I never heard of that one before. As she says, do ask for meds asap. Here is my normal spiel, which I hope helps. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, frozen smoothie ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommended), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry orchocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Frozen apple juice has been recommended. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings and dry cereeal.
On the foods in my normal spiel, oh dear, someone discovered a new food that helped recently, and I made note of it, and now I can't find it...
Newmother321 Welcome. Congratulations on your pregnancy. Did any meds help you last time? Definitely ask for them again asap. Can family or friends help with your toddler? Rest helps as much as meds, and it can be very difficult with an LO.
Inmydreams88 I'm glad Ondansetron is helping. Have you had a laxative prescribed like Lactulose? Do ask your doctor if not.

Definitely ask for a laxative from your doctor, such as Lactulose. Most sufferers need one with Ondansetron.

Thank you for your help @LucindaE i started the tablets 2 days ago and it has made a world of difference. I’m only taking 1 at night and my prescription says up to 2 and night and up to 2 in the morning so can go up if needed.

Still feel like I’m walking a tightrope and could trip over into constant vomiting at any moment but haven’t actually been sick since taking the tablets, just the occasional thing that makes me heave a little.

Just in case it helps anyone else, I have found the tropical defence innocent smoothie has been something that has always stayed down for me this time. Last time it was lucozade, but this baby said no to that 🤢

LucindaE · 06/07/2023 19:57

Pastaf0rbreakfast I am glad that the meds are helping. It is very brave of you to keep on breastfeeding with Hyperemesis. I was one of the (extremely few) unlucky ones, who found the hormones of the let down nauseated me, so I can't imagine keeping on with that! Thank you for the smoothie tip. A shame Lucozade is off limits this time.

Newmother321 · 07/07/2023 16:46

@LucindaE I'm actually surprisingly still feeling ok. A few dry heaves over the past 2 days but still holding out hope that this pregnancy might be better. But I get the fear every morning when I wake up that HG is going to have started.

I might call GP and get some medication in preparation for when that day comes.

Last time around cyclizine took the edge off for a few days and then had ondansetron.

LucindaE · 07/07/2023 18:35

Newmother321 I am glad that it is holding off. I am not sure if Xovea was around when you suffered last? It might be worth a try, as it was invented specially for pregnancy sickness and has helped many on here.

OP posts:
Newmother321 · 08/07/2023 14:47

@LucindaE oh I haven't heard of that one so I don't think it was around (or at least not routinely prescribed) last time around. I'll be sure to ask about that one!

It's good to hear there is more research and development going into treatments for HG!

LucindaE · 08/07/2023 18:31

Newmother321 It has certainly helped a few on here. Some doctors can be reluctant to prescribe, though it was designed specifically for pregnancy sickness, due, I believe, to expense compared to some of the other meds, but as you were on Ondansetron last time, they must have categorized you as being a severe case, and I haven't heard it is more expensive than Ondansetron.

Thanks @LucindaE
I’m doing better with medication, still some bad days but mostly okay days. After a bad week and getting admitted for fluids etc, I was linked in with the maternity hospital dietician (Dublin) and got great
support. I would urge others to ask for same supports to see if they’re available.
Shout out to @QueenBee22 for your helpful advice, how are you doing?
@Pastaf0rbreakfast thanks for smoothie tip, glad meds are working for you.

LucindaE · 11/07/2023 17:50

StrongSeedling Sorry to hear of admission. I am glad that the hospital services have been helpful. Good advice about making use of those.

@LucindaE thank you for all the advice, I’m been trying to try out different things you suggest. Tiny bits of Lucozade seem to be helping a bit to give me more energy. I’m only just 8 weeks today. Feels like the longest 4 weeks of my life. I don’t feel like I can cope for much longer. Praying this eases soon.

LucindaE · 13/07/2023 21:12

Golz I am glad the Lucoazade gives you a bit of energy. Remind me what meds they have you on? It is hardest in the early weeks.Things do improve for most sufferers.

Ladies, I'm 7 weeks and thought I had escaped for this pregnancy with mild nausea only (what I imagine is normal 'morning sickness') but this morning, holy crap HG has officially hit!

Taking it as a good sign as I'm due for my 2nd scan today, last week they thought I may be miscarrying so today's scan is to check on progress. Fingers crossed. The only and only good sign of HG.

I've not been able to stop crying all morning at the thought of having HG again and not being able to look after my little girl. How are people dealing with it second time around?

Chanhedforthis · 14/07/2023 18:28

Hi everyone hope im ok to join

Newmother321 I'm also 7 weeks, DH had to have the day off work today to look after our 2 year old. My mum is also coming tomororw to help. Do you have any family help?

Havent left bed all day, feeling more depressed as the days go by.

kingfisher657 · 14/07/2023 20:14

Hi everyone. Not sure I count as HG but I'm having a miserable time. Second pregnancy, in the first one I waited far too long to ask for help and had to go through 3 different medications before I found cyclizine helpful...but that wasn't until 14 weeks so probably over the worst anyway.

This time I started taking cyclizine as soon as the nausea hit, but despite this I'm still feeling nauseous almost constantly. No vomiting, and I'm able to eat (if I choose the right food) and sleep, but I'm only 6 weeks and so worried it will get worse. I have such a long, long time to go and don't know how I can cope with this again...
