I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hi @LucindaE I'm coping well today, thanks
Also looks like you've put Kxx's name against my due date or, we might be due date Twinnies 🙂

Updates on me: The set back I had on my symptoms improving continued for a week and a half and I was really struggling. I had a phone review with my GP to confirm if there was a need to extend my sick note as I've been off work for 8 weeks and during the review he said he thought I needed to be sent to the hospital as my symptoms sounded a bit severe. So he asked that I went into the surgery for a physical review. While I was at the surgery I almost passed out and had to be laid on the floor with my legs raised to improve blood flow. I was sent to the hospital and while I was speaking with the nurse I started to feel and look like I was going to collapse again so she called for back up. Turned out I was very dehydrated and my blood pressure was low.
I was kept overnight, given for bags of IV fluid (first one was rushed for an hour) and IV antisick.

Here are my learnings from this experience:
We HG sufferers are strong women and many times get used to the symptoms and don't realise when we are at the limit and need urgent medical attention. We just want to be strong for ourselves and our loved ones!

I'll encourage everyone to not stretch our limits, I stretched mine and was lucky to have had a good GP!
Seek medical help on time please!

I am back home and I feel a lot better today. I've been able to keep food down and I'm improving.

Thanks @LucindaE for creating and managing this thread; I really feel supported from the posts that all the strong Mums here make

Mamash · 25/06/2023 21:34

Sorry, I meant four bags of IV fluid

LucindaE · 26/06/2023 19:42

Mamash My goodness, that sounds awful and dramatic. I am glad that they took prompt action and you are a lot better today. Did the prescribe new meds? I am glad this thread is helping. You and Kxxx are indeed due on the same date - Christmas presents, almost...

Hi @Mamash that honestly sounds like an awful experience. I was in a similar situation two weeks ago but thankfully got to A&E in time. Got two bags of IV and antisick just like you. Although I felt better after the help, the feeling didn't last long.

Now in the dreaded week 9, at least I know it can get worse than this. Unfortunately although I would love my due date to be 22 December its actually 28th January. Your closer to all this being over than I am.

I do have a doctors appointment today finally where Im going to ask for a change in medication. Cyclzine is just not cutting it and the drowsiness really doesn't help.

LucindaE · 27/06/2023 16:49

Kxxx Sorry; Mamash was right, and I must have confused the dates. I've rectified your date. The first baby on this thread due whose date is 2024.

Hi! Hope everyone is doing well.
have been lurking on here for a while, I thought my HG would have disappeared by now but at 20 weeks I’m still constantly nauseous all day, everyday. Have been in and out of work on reduced hours (currently been off for two days as I just can’t cope). It’s really debilitating, I spend most my time in bed and I don’t know how I’m going to cope for the next 20 weeks. I’m trying to accept that I’m going to be nauseous for the rest of the pregnancy but it’s so hard 😭. I have tried every recommendation under the sun, nothing is working. Currrntly taking Ondansetron which I think is the only thing stopping me throwing up. Just sat living in hope that it will disappear before the birth as I really want to enjoy at least some of this pregnancy 😫

LucindaE · 28/06/2023 21:43

Yarnie Welcome. Sorry you are suffering so badly at 20 weeks. As you have been lurking, you won't need to read my normal spiel, having seen it before. I wonder if it might be worth phoning Pregnancy Sickness Support on 024 7638 2020, as while they will have to phone back, they may be able to offer advice about whether adding any meds to the Ondansetron might help. I take it you have tried anti acids and that you have got a laxative to deal with any constipation from Onansetron? Some on here have improved after 20 weeks. It is very depressing being stuck in bed. Can you stand screens, or if not, reading print, audio books, and the radio?

Yarnle · 29/06/2023 08:57

@LucindaE thabks for the reply!
Will definitely give them a call, my GP has been great and I has now got me some Gaviscon prescribed and have been taking some laxtulose for the constipation.
I am able to stand screens etc which is good.
The bordem is real! Think I am one of the few unlucky ones to have it so linger so long 😞 x

LucindaE · 29/06/2023 20:29

Yarnie If the Gaviscon is not workiing, do ask for Omprazole. Glad you've got Lactulose. Cheering you on.

@Yarnle I'm almost 19 weeks and still nauseous and exhausted all day long. I’m also taking ondensatron, had reduced my dosage but I immediately started being sick again and nausea was unbearable. Midwife and GP said to take it regularly and it’s helped so much compared to how I was but it’s still such a struggle. I’m working as much as I can, trying to do what I can at home but everything is hard work. My poor toddler has been neglected! I’m bored beyond relief, miss the smallest things like having a cup of tea with a colleague. Can’t make any proper plans as I don’t know how I feel. Got some friends coming to see me tomorrow hoping that will lift my spirits! Also dreading this will last whole pregnancy. Fingers crossed for both of us that it doesn’t x

Inmydreams88 · 01/07/2023 10:01

Just been prescribed Ondansetron, 4mg it says to take 3 times a day. How long should I leave between doses? When I googled it said 8 hours.

Seasidegirl11 · 01/07/2023 10:22

I tend to have one when I first wake, another around 2 and another before I go to bed.

Inmydreams88 · 01/07/2023 12:12

Seasidegirl11 · 01/07/2023 10:22

I tend to have one when I first wake, another around 2 and another before I go to bed.

So waiting 8 hours isn't necessary then? How have you found them? x

Seasidegirl11 · 01/07/2023 12:19

@Inmydreams88 it’s pretty much 8 hours as toddler has me up early.

When I was really bad and in hospital they would reduce the sickness enough so I could get some water in me but was still feeling awful. Now I’m slightly better they stop the vomiting and reduce the sickness but I’m still not very good. If I’m late taking a tablet I quickly go downhill. If they are working for you speak to the GP and try some other combinations. We tried various to see what helped.

Yarnle · 01/07/2023 12:32

@Seasidegirl11 sorry you are suffering too. It really is an awful condition when you’re in the thick of it. It feels like no end. Glad your symptoms are improving somewhat with medication, hopefully soon we will be able to enjoy some of this before baby arrives! I just keep thinking the newborn stage and labour has to be a breeze compared to coping with this sickness 🙏🏽 I can’t wait to have a normal life back instead of waking up wondering how I’m going to get through my day! X

LucindaE · 01/07/2023 13:42

Seasidegirl11 Sorry you are suffering too at 19 weeks. I'm glad it has improved a bit, and some friends are calling round. LO's soon tend to forget this period of comparative neglect, from what those on this thread have said, so try not to torture yourself too much about it. Good advicefor Inmydreams88.
Yarnie Those with severe cases often report that they didn't find labour or looking after a newborn difficult in comparison.

Rohise · 01/07/2023 18:13

@Seasidegirl11 im 18 weeks currently myself. Tried to reduce ondansetron as well but vomitted again in the afternoon. Thought i was feeling good this morning so i experimented. Nevertheless, seems like i still need it. Ill keep on experimenting but only on weekends and see.

this is my first pregnancy so no other kids around. But let me tell you the house is a mess. I just cant be bothered to do the cleaning in the house. Im back at work but on reduced hours. I just want to keep myself a little preoccupied but not too stressed.

i am myself worried that ill feel this way all throughout the pregnancy. but i am so grateful that we have this message board. I am in a better place today compared to a month ago because of the support and recommendations in this thread.

LucindaE · 02/07/2023 19:41

Rohise With luck, it will improve more. Brave of you to return to work; I hope you're not overdoing it. I am glad this thread is helping. I will be away on a trip tomorrow, but back on Tuesday.

Pastaf0rbreakfast · 04/07/2023 15:14

Hi all,

I’m now 8+3 and have been suffering with extreme nausea, and I can fully confirm that this is just as bad if not worse than vomiting! Last time I was vomiting at least 15 times per day at this stage.

Up until yesterday I had only been sick a handful of times but yesterday I was unable to keep anything down, picked up a bit today so I’m now keeping down fluids and some food (if pop tarts count as food???)

I’ve finally been able to collect my prescription for promethazine, has anyone taken this? The fact the leaflet says not to be taken when pregnant or breastfeeding puts me off as I’m both, but GP was sure it should be fine, considering my son is nearly 2 and only feeding 3-5times in 24hrs.

Planning to take it tonight but not sure if I should wait until after midnight as my son usually feeds around midnight and then again at 5am-ish.

Thanks!

LucindaE · 04/07/2023 17:54

Back home! Pastaf0rbreakfast Several on here have been helped by that med. I am sure your GP would not be so confident if he wasn't sure it was safe. They always err on the side of caution these days. Again, it might be worth ringing Pregnancy Sickness Support on 024 7638 2020 about your concerns about your LO's feeding times.
