I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

roxster Thank you so much for your encouraging post. Several sufferers on here have said that it is amazing how the symptoms improve on holiday. I am glad you felt generally better on your trip, savefor a couple of days.

Hi, am i able to join please? 8 weeks and im pretty sure hyperemesis is trying to kill me! 3rd pregnancy (7year old dd and an mc just before this preg) had what i thought was pretty bad sickness with daughter but not a patch on this, been precribed cyclizine then promethazine, neither have helped and I had to be admitted for fluids yesterday, they discharged me last night but ketones still 3+ after 2 bags of fluids so feeling just as rotten. They advised to up the promethazine but looks like im already on a higher dose so appointment with gp later to discuss.

Feeling rotten but discovering this thread has given me hope im not alone, although i feel for everyone else suffering too.

LucindaE · 12/06/2023 19:21

Sickandtired32 Welcome. Sorry you are suffering and about your earlier MC. It might be worth asking for Xonvea, as that has been very helpful for some on here, and it was designed specially for pregnancy sickness. There is lots of support on here. Here is my normal spiel, which I hope helps. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, frozen smoothie ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommende), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry orchocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Frozen apple juice has been recommended. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings and dry cereeal.

Hi all, I’m joining the ranks. So grateful to have found this support thread.
3rd HG pregnancy, second baby.
symptoms this time around are much more difficult to deal with mentally, we are all so flipping strong to cope with this.
my husband has taken over completely with our son, house etc.
may I ask does anyone roughly know when do ketones set in?
Haven’t kept any food down today and only tiny bit of water, am an hour away from health centre so want to think ahead. Thank you and sending strength xx

StrongSeedling · 12/06/2023 22:01

@QueenBee22 i took active iron during my last pregnancy, very gentle on the tummy. A gentler version again is Floradix. Keep us posted how you get on xx

LucindaE · 13/06/2023 18:05

StrongSeedlingWelcome. Sorry you are suffering. I have heard that a pregnant woman not being able to keep water down for 24 hours should count as a medical emergency. The whole issue of when ketones set in if you have been able to eat a small amount of food seems to variable and complex that I think Ihad better wait for someone more scientifically knowledgable to advise you. It is certainly a good idea to contact the local hospital for advice about whether to come in. What meds have they prescribed you? As you are a veteran, you almost certainly don't need the normal spiel which I copied below for Sickandtired. Good advice about iron tablets.

LucindaE · 13/06/2023 18:07

StrongSeedling Sorry, that should read 'so variable and complex' not 'to variable and complex'.

QueenBee22 · 13/06/2023 19:53

@StrongSeedling sorry to hear you are feeling so unwell. It might be worth ringing your hospital to see if you need to be admitted for fluids.

Thanks for the advice I am taking the active iron every second day for now on the advice of my GP. The pharmacist advised it is the most gentle one on the tummy. They didn't have Floradix I must look into it. The iron tablet is making the nausea worse so I can't manage every day at the moment.

Mamash · 14/06/2023 19:44

Hello everyone,
Thought to share some positive news...
I'm now about 12weeks and 5 days (1st trimester done!) and I feel better. I'm still retching sometimes but not as much as it was two weeks ago. I seem to get through the day with improved energy levels (though I'm still lethargic). I sound this positive because I was in a bad shape to the extent that I felt my legs giving up every time I stood up but that feeling is now gone.
I only still eat very little and I'm still losing weight.

I went for a pregnancy massage and I think that also made me feel better because I no longer have body aches.

I was on B12 and B6 till I was 12 weeks; that was prescribed by my fertility consultant at the on set of hyperemesis. I feel like it helped because the HG that I'm having now although quite severe is not as severe as what I had in my first pregnancy.

LucindaE · 14/06/2023 20:48

QueenBee22 Much sympathy over iron tablet nausea.
Mamash That is happy news that things are improving. Thank you so much for coming on to encourage others, and for that tip about vitamins b12 and b6.

OP posts:
Jaystarlight · 15/06/2023 12:31

@Mamash so happy for you! At 6 weeks I’m really battling just started Cyclizine not holding out much hope. Did you take them as 2 sep tablets or combined? X

Mamash · 15/06/2023 13:57

@Jaystarlight congratulations!
At six weeks I was also on cyclizine and prochlorperazine; those were changed to Ondansetron at 9 weeks and then Xonvea at ten weeks which I'm still on.
I took B12 an B6 as separate tablets

I'll like to encourage you by saying there's light at the end of the tunnel; I know it's really hard to see it!

I've had a bit of set back since last night as I've been retching a lot and I'm not able to eat for now, that has made me cry so much as I had improved a lot but I'm trying to keep the faith alive!

A distant relative who has had it more severe is now due to have her baby; she's been my support and just remembering her at the end of the journey keeps the faith alive in me!

There is light at the end of the tunnel!

cossie13 · 15/06/2023 14:07

Hi, hoping I'll be ok in here. I've not officially got hyperemesis as I'm not vomiting. But I'm feeling sick 24/7, there is no relief and I haven't found anything I can eat that doesn't make it worse. I'm really struggling with energy levels and the heat isn't helping matters!

Jaystarlight · 15/06/2023 14:24

@Mamash thank you so much for replying. Sorry you had a set back I pray you continue to feel better.
May I ask are you on both Odansetron & xonvea now or just the latter alongside B vits? x
@cossie13 Hi, I too feel nausea 24/7 just started Cyclizine. Do seek medical help if you need it. X

Mamash · 15/06/2023 14:37

@Jaystarlight Thanks for your kind words!
I'm praying that I feel better again soon.

I'm on Xonvea only now; I had concerns about Ondesetron due to some research outcomes that I read about and so I asked for Xonvea as it's for pregnancy sickness.

I was on Xonvea and the B vitamins till week 12. I've now discontinued the B12 and B6 but I'm still on Xonvea

Xonvea has worked quite well for me

LucindaE · 15/06/2023 21:56

Welcome to Jaystarlight and cossie13. cossie13 It is possible to suffer from
Hyperemesis without vomting, though it does seem that medics are more reluctant to prescribe meds. As this is not the usual situation, it might be worth phoning Pregnancy Sickness Support on 024 7638 2020 for advice. They will have to phone back, but will give good advice about how best to obtain meds. Jaystarlight It can be very discouraging early on. Things do get better for most sufferers. I hope my normal spiel below might be useful for you and cossie13. Just discount the bits that don't apply. it might be worth asking for Xonvea, as that has been very helpful for some on here, and it was designed specially for pregnancy sickness. There is lots of support on here. Here is my normal spiel, which I hope helps. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Mamash A good day, or a few, is often a sign of a coming turnaround and more to come. Sympathies about the return of the symptoms.
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

Thank you so much for the advice, I have my booking appointment next week so I'll ask then if there's anything they can do.

I just feel like a fraud half the time because I'm not being sick and I know you ladies that are constantly vomiting have it so much worse and I really feel for you. It is draining though constantly feeling like I need to be sick x

Kxx · 16/06/2023 18:53

Hi everyone,

I am now approaching the peak of hypermesis nearing the 9th week of pregnancy. Absolutely nervous because I can not see how it can get worse.

Yesterday was a particularly bad day for me with continuous sickness (that orange stuff that we all love) and mind bending nausea. Ive tried to get medication, really want to try Xoneva but not managed to get a doctors appointment yet.

Ive realised that I go through stages of grief during hypermesis. I know this is the weirdest way to describe it. I started with denial, refusing to accept and just not sure why these things were happening to me. Im now at the acceptance stage and just accepting that its just going to be like this for a while. Getting to this stage hugely helps to mentally get through the days.

Just a few of my thoughts that I really hope can help some people. You are not alone and we will all get through this. ❤️

Jaystarlight · 16/06/2023 19:20

@Kxx wow you are super mentally strong! My mind is my worst enemy. I am petrified of sick too, you seem so calm.
I got Xonvea today for 24/7 nausea. I just keep telling myself I can’t cope and makes me want to end it at times because I’m panicking!

LucindaE · 16/06/2023 19:25

cossie13 Best wishes for the booking in appointment.
Kxxx Sorry you are suffering and approaching 10 weeks with apprehension. Bile is vile! I do hope you get meds soon. Your grief analogy is an highly astute one.

OP posts:
Kxx · 16/06/2023 19:26

@Jaystarlight please don't get me wrong. I have been crying everyday since the hypermesis started. Today I just thought I owed it to myself to try and be more positive. Im not sure how long that will last but just accepting what is happening goes a long way in helping mentally.

The sickness is the worst. My DH describes it as a mini exorcism and he’s not wrong.

Please let me know how you get on with Xoneva. Im hoping to manage to get an appointment with the GP soon.

Kxx · 16/06/2023 19:29

Thanks @LucindaE for your continuous support on this thread. It doesn't go unnoticed.
