I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

TisforTucan Than you for your kind words. I am glad you've got Omprazole and it's helping. I hope Xonvea helps too. It certainly has helped many with quite bad Hyperemesis on these threads since it was introduced.
Okapi99 Great advice from Quinny2288 and Worryant about that dismal problem with changing sleep routine and worse Hyperemesis. I wonder if juggling another med would help sort of tide you over. Sorry, remind me what you're on atm.
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

Mellissa2023 Sorry, cross posted. That's awful about the glucose test and their not being told about your Hypeemesis: for goodness sake. I am so glad OH was able to advocate. Oh dear, when you said 'out of the window' that made me think of someone on here who had to vomit out of the window at a hospital once: with me it was the floor...Good you've got a blood test and are finding the drinks of some use. I often think the unhealthy drinks and foods are the ones that seem easiest for many - not everyone: some can't stand sweet drinks or salty foods.

Hi lucinda. I'm taking cyclazine and a b6 supplement. My gp won't let me have more than 2 xonvea tablets a day, so I decided to not take it. I think I might ring tomorrow and see if I can get a prescription for ondansetron as well for when I'm working. I'm about 8 weeks today

stewielouie · 26/10/2022 13:10

Hi, I’ve name changed since I was last here.

I have recently found out I am pregnant again and at just 4.5 weeks the intense nausea and hypersalivation has already started as it did in my last pregnancy, and I found this thread so helpful then. I am already prescribed cyclizine and have stocked up on tinned fruits for the juice. Now I just feel like I am waiting for the impending doom of HG to take hold again.

Posting to placemark for tips and support in the darkest moments.

To everyone going through this for the first time. You can get through it. It feels hard now but it will end. And truthfully you do start to forget just how awful it was, which I never thought possible!

LucindaE · 26/10/2022 21:21

stewielouie Welcome back. I'm glad this thread helped before. What was your old name? Sorry to hear that the symptoms are happening so soon. Glad you've got pre-emptive meds. What meds helped last time? Thank you for that encouraging message.
Okapi99 I find it odd that the doctor is only allowing you two tablets a day. I believe the starting dose is two at night, but is the doctor not going to increase it, if necessary? Is this due to expense, as the drug is definitely specifically for use in pregnancy. On Ondansetron, I hope you are able to have it prescribed, know some doctors play safe by not prescribing it before 12- or is it 10 - weeks, because of the very minimal risks supposedly associated with it, according to a recent study.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Checking in.

Promethazine still keeping the sickness largely at bay but as a sedative it means I’m groggy a lot of the time and find it very very hard to get up in the morning. I’m always tired.

Every couple of nights at around 6pm I get a wave of incredibly strong nausea and vomit until there’s nothing left in my stomach, but that’s it as far as sickness goes at the moment - much better than the 5 times a day and twice at night horror that I had before.

Much love to you all, it really is completely debilitating and horrifying.

Okapi99 · 27/10/2022 11:59

Yes lucinda, the dr now won't prescribe me ondansetron to have with it unless I have a dr appt first. I can't believe how difficult it is to get meds 😐

Okapi99 · 27/10/2022 13:32

I've got ondansetron 😁

LucindaE · 27/10/2022 20:51

Cuppasoupmonster That sounds unpleasant, but I'm glad it's improved and I hope it improves a lot more and that the sedative effect reduces.
Okapi99 That's good to hear.

Hi ladies, quick update on me - back on cyclizine and prochlorperazine (may have spelt that one wrong!) because I would have needed the OK from the hospital to continue on the ondansetron and I am just fed up of giving blood and wee right now, I am a pin cushion and covered in bruises! Will see how I go but.. without jinxing anything.. if you could all touch some wood for me when you see this.. yesterday I had a GOOD day and although I had some nasty nausea and did have some retching I wasn't sick?! Incredible. 17 might be my lucky number as I am 17 weeks today! No doubt it'll only be temporary and it's a constant battle to stay on top of medication but it has been so lovely to feel like a human being for 48 hours instead of like a zombie. Going downhill again today as expected but I feel so very blessed to have had it as it's meant I've finally had some proper sleep.

All my best wishes and love to all of you, fingers and toes crossed, that you might have a similar day soon as I know how much of a relief it was and only this group would truly understand that

LucindaE · 29/10/2022 21:12

Melissa2023 I am happy to hear that. Very often, a good day or two is the sign of more to come and the turnaround to things improving. I do so hope you follow this pattern.

Oh my word, I was just coming onto the thread now to ask if it's normal to have 48 hours where I felt great, and then the last four days, I've gone downhill again. I see it is. 6 days ago i finally felt good, i was back to my old self, doing ots of stuff around the house, taking the dog for a walk. And then i have had only bad days for the rest of the four days. Today I was back to being in tears wondering how I'm going to do this.

FTMworrier · 29/10/2022 21:24

@Quinny2288 @Melissa2023 that is a positive sign, although very disheartening when the rough days return! I found this happened a lot to me as I was getting over the worst of it which was around 15 weeks I think. 🤞🏻 For you both x

Quinny2288 · 29/10/2022 21:26

Can I ask you all something, that have been through this before? I am currently 14 weeks and 5 days. When I was in my first trimester, everyone kept saying it gets better during the second trimester. I have now entered my second trimester and I am still throwing up.

I also saw the midwife on Thur and I told her I'm still not feeling much better except for a couple of good days and she goes to me, oh by week 16 you should start to feel so much better.

I just wondered if other people have actually found they started feeling better eventually? Or is there a chance I will be sick throughout my whole pregnancy? What's been other's experience? Is it likely that with hyperemsis we don't follow the same pattern as others, and actually all of this "by week xx, you should start to feel better" doesn't apply?

Thank you. You’ve sort of answered my next question, as well ❤. I’m 15 weeks on Monday. Did you go from being well for a couple of days then lots of bad days and then the balance slowly shifted? Or was it more sudden?

FTMworrier · 30/10/2022 06:20

@Quinny2288 I remember having the odd day that wasn’t as bad, maybe once every 10 days or so. Then after my 12 week scan I got signed off from work rather than trying to just work whenever I was well enough or in between being sick.
I started on a new medication and had a good couple of days and then I had the worst few days throwing up all of the healthy fruit I had managed to consume and was on the brink of going into hospital. After that horrendous episode it really levelled out. By 15/16 weeks I went back to work (at home). I would still be sick occasionally if I was stressed or worried about anything or if I got too hot, but it was more like a one off every few weeks (like the 20 week scan). Hopefully it’ll be similar for you 🙂

This is really helpful, thank you. I got signed off around the 11 week mark, I think I struggled through like a zombie the first few weeks and then just hit a wall after my mental health just couldn’t take it anymore. I’m due back to work after 11 Nov, and one of the things I often think is how on earth am I going to go back to work if I’m still like this. Anyway, really hope things shift for me in the next couple of weeks. Thank you for sharing your patterns x

SpringChicken06 · 30/10/2022 15:57

@Melissa2023 @Quinny2288 in the exact same boat. I tend to try and do what i normally could before on the good days but learnt now to just take it easy still otherwise it’s another rough week. But my good turn started at 17 weeks like yourself Melissa and now just hit 18, and still (like you touch wood) feel not bad. Sleep and anti-sickness are still a daily necessity though but work and eating is more manageable finally!

LucindaE · 30/10/2022 20:31

Quinny2288 You've already had great advice about when many feel improvement and how a couple of good days is a very good sign of improvement to come. Most get improvement between weeks 15-21. An unfortunate minority suffer sickness throughout, but even for them it is only rarely as bad later on as it is in earlier days. There are hormonal surges, for instance, week 20, which can cause tempary relapses. don't try and rush back to work. Get as many sick notes as you need. It is very debilitating and you need to recover for a bit, even when the symptoms lessen, as rest is very important.
Great advice from SpringChicken 06 and FTMworrier. Glad to hear of the improvements.

Hi.
After being sick all weekend I took a tested and it’s positive I’m just under 5 weeks. I am so sick. HG runs in my family. What do I do to be taken seriously by dr? And also what do I do about my work?!

I literally have been sick all night. It’s only 4 weeks 4 days. I don’t know if I’ll cope.

izzyroo92 · 31/10/2022 10:34

Hi all,

10 weeks due 27th May.

Was hospitalised at 7 weeks. To say this is a struggle is an understatement. I'm on cyclzine (dunno how you spell it) I the sickness has reduced to once a day which is obvs great but I'm so dizzy I feel like I cant stand up! The anti sickness do makes me feel very spaced out and zombie like. Trying to get hold of the gp this morning for some advice because I can't carry on like this.
My other half has taken a week off work but he's gone back today so I'm on my own looking after my 3 year old and I dunno how we're gunna make it through the day!

LucindaE · 31/10/2022 19:13

izzyroo92 Welcome. Ten weeks is often the worst bit for many sufferers. A hormonal surge adds to the misery. I've added my normal spiel below for both you and Carly2014 in case you need it, though you may have suffered before with your 3 year old. Do aks for stronger meds, though it's exhausting pressing for them when feeling terrible. Are there friends and family who might be able to help a bit? Does your 3 year old go to nursery so you can rest then, at least? I'll add your due date.
Carly2014 Welcome. As you are suffering badly so early, you obviously need meds and to have your urine tested asap. I am afraid most sufferers - particularly those who suffer badly, do need to take a fair bit of time off work. Here is my normal spiel for you and izzyroo92 which I hope might be of use.
Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, frozen smoothie ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommende), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry or chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings , dry cereals and slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.
