I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Just got 8mg ondansetron and anti acid. Hoping these help better. Nausea is constant & still throwing up & heaving when I was on the 4mg. Been struggling eating much at all & just on sips of water.
Enough so far to keep me going but def want to be able to drink & eat more so I can keep working & be better for the kids in the evening & weekend. Working from bed today :-( with little work been done.
Any one got any food ideas? My poor DP is at a lost what to offer me. A cheese toastie was a hit in my last pregnancy but I can't look at them now.

evuscha · 03/04/2023 21:21

Smart ladies, I have a medication question, I’m a little over 7 weeks and miserable 😩 second HG pregnancy and I went the route of early preemptive medication. I first got on Xonvea, then added cyclizine twice a day. It worked well to prevent vomiting and keep me hydrated but the nausea is still progressing and debilitating. I couldn’t take it anymore today and took a 4mg Ondansetron.
My question is, should I quit cyclizine or can I take both since they’re different types? And should I quit Xonvea? (I think that and cyclizine are both antihistamines?)
My worry is this will still get worse before it gets better but also I don’t want to be on too many pills unnecessarily.
Wishing everyone a peaceful night!

LucindaE · 04/04/2023 20:50

evuscha I think you need advice from someone with better understanding of chemistry on here, or failing that, it might be worth asking Pregnancy Sickness Support on 024 7638 2020. Sorry no-one's been able to advise you so far. Would the pharmacist who dispenses be able to advise?
LilmissCa I can only think of various foods that some have found bearable on here. Chips, crisps, tinned fruit, especially peaches, cheap ice cream, baked potatoes...
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

I will consult PSS, thank you @LucindaE ! The problem with healthcare workers is they always say I shouldn’t take any/should take as little as possible especially in the first trimester..

Puddinandpie · 05/04/2023 00:05

I'm really struggling at the minute with keeping anything down now and did wonder about protein shakes or meal replacement drinks/shakes, has anyone tried or can recommend any?

LucindaE · 05/04/2023 17:57

evuscha I do hope they can advise you. Sorry the health professionals are being unhelpful.
Puddenandpie They have both helped various womng each other. en on here. Also, some find chocolate milk shakes, perhaps soya, bearable.
I will be unexpectedly away tomorrow and Good Friday, but will be back on Saturday until 16th when I have to deal with a family matter. You are all so good at supporting each other, anyway.

Hello, just back. Blundering about, as in my absence, OH has changed the settings on my laptop and I can't even make out if there are updates to this thread. Oh dear. I must somehow sort this out.

Hope everyone is surviving the Easter weekend. I’ve been getting a horrible after taste in my mouth every time I eat anything. I’m on medication which seems to be preventing any vomiting but this issue is causing me to dread eating. One of the medications I’m on is Omeprazole and that’s not helping. Anyone else getting this or know why this happens? Thanks

LucindaE · 09/04/2023 21:04

Ambern7 Sympathies: a good few have that, generally earlier rather than later on.
I used to suck barcley sugar sweets I got from a traditional sweet shop, or those funny 'travel sweets' you can get in a tin from some chemists; others swear by Parma violets; I remember chewing fresh mint from the garden, too; it is foul.
I seem to have sorted out the settings problems with my laptop...

Hi, looking for some help out of my sick bucket. I am 6+3 and a few days ago sickness struck. I’m struggling to keep food down and as well as vomiting have had diarrhoea. I did wonder if I have a bug but I don’t have any other symptoms and it seems to start and be worse early morning. I’m worried as haven’t kept food down since Friday morning and I don’t know whether I should get help now or if I’m being dramatic.

Im bridesmaid at a wedding next week so im also panicking about my ability to do that atm.

Ambern7 · 10/04/2023 17:04

Thanks @LucindaE I will definitely give some sweets a go, hadn’t thought of that. I am still early on, only 9 weeks so really hope that symptom reduces.
Glad you got your settings sorted out in the end.

LucindaE · 10/04/2023 21:33

Ambern7 I hope it helps. Thanks about settings.
Buttons86 Welcome. It could be a bug, but it does seem a co-incidence. As it seems so violent, do make an appointment to see your gp and ask for meds and have your urine checked for dehydration. Here is my normal spiel, which I hope helps. Here's my normal spiel, which I hope helps. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, frozen smoothie ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommende), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry orchocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Frozen apple juice has been recommended. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings and dry cereeal.

Hello, can I jump on? Currently 5+2 and had my first episode of nausea today after having had HG in my last three pregnancies, this will be DC2. I got my GP to prescribe Ondansetron as it was the only thing that worked last time around. Took my first pill today hoping I can keep on top of it this time….here’s hoping

cashmerecow · 11/04/2023 19:59

Hi guys, just as I thought my HG was calming down the last week, it's come back with a vengeance since last night and I've not been able to keep anything down at all today :( the nausea sucks!! Going to be 14 weeks tomorrow, thought I was getting to a good point but nope!! It's like my body's saying haha only joking here you go again 😭

spanglesj · 11/04/2023 20:40

Hi is anyone on this thread at the mo and suffering from HG?

Been so tough. Looking after my 2.5 yr old too, and feel so guilty not being ‘ present ‘ . when I’m sick he asks if he can help and rubs my leg. Going to ring the GP tmo as not sure I’m hydrated enough.

Buttons86 · 11/04/2023 22:12

@LucindaE thanks so much for the advice really appreciate it.

I have an appointment for tomorrow and it hasn’t got any better. Even the thought of eating is making me sick so just trying to get fluids into me and rest. It is grim!

LucindaE · 12/04/2023 21:05

spanglesj Welcome. Yes, there are a good few on here, though it's been quiet over Easter. Sorry you are suffering. I take it this is your second Hyperemesis pregnancy, and you won'tneed my advice about 'have you got kesostix, as while not the best test of dehydration, hospitals take their measurements seriously' and 'do you find full sugar coke, ice lollies and the juice of tinned fruit help' and 'a good anti acid can make a huge difference'? What meds are you on? Have you got any help from family/friends? I'm glad you are contacting your doctor if you have concerns about dehydration.
Buttons86 How did the appointment go? Fluids are the main thing when really suffering.
slimshadyscousin Welcome. I am glad the doctor has prescribed Ondansetron. As a veteran, you don't need to be reminded about the need for a laxative with that!
cashmerecow Sorry to hear that. Many seem to have a hormonal surge around 14 weeks. Might it be that?

Signing up to this club that none of us want to be in! 😔I’m sorry for everyone suffering with this wretched condition. It’s so miserable. I am 11.5 weeks in and have been suffering since around 5 weeks. Have tried four different meds but nothing has helped so far. Am back and forth to A&E for IVs, and wish they could offer fluids as an outpatient. Briefly had some respite through acupuncture but that doesn’t seem to be working now either. Generally just feeling very low as I can’t work or leave me room very much at all.

I just wanted to share this book someone brought me, as it was helpful to use with my little girl to speak about what has been happening, as its been very confusing for her. I hope others may find it helpful.

BettylovesAugust Welcome. Yes, I always call this 'the thread nobody wants to be on'! Thank you for the link: that is such a good picture book. Sorry none of the meds has helped so far. Are you a first time sufferer, as I normally quote my normal spiel, but I had the idea you were not for some reason, though haviing an LO isn't always an indication, as some escape it in their first pregnancy! If you are a first time sufferer, my apologise and the normal spiel is only a few posts below.

Puddinandpie · 14/04/2023 10:21

Only just spoke to the doctor this morning, who made it clear as day they couldn't be bothered with seeing me or even talking with any effort, they haven't checked my urine, haven't bothered in general and now im being told I can't choose the hospital I want because it's not on their list at the gp surgery, meaning they have to phone specific hospital in there lunch break to get me referred and that they can't be arsed to do their job! Has anyone experienced this in london where they work on catchment now as opposed to being able to choose where you are safe and happy to have your baby, between crap hospitals and good hospitals? Im not asking to have my baby in scotland and i live in london, just to have my baby in hackney instead of tottenham! Sorry I'm venting feel very tearful and angry today, just want one thing to go smoothly!😮‍💨

Puddinandpie · 14/04/2023 10:26

Also got given cyclizine but told she's not prescribing acid reflux as I will be taking to many tablets/medicines "we don't want to overload the baby" so instead I've got to suffer bloody heartburn every evening causing me to be violently sick before bed every night! The mind boggles!

Puddinandpie · 14/04/2023 10:27

Do they do that prescribe one and not the other? I told her gaviscon makes me more sick eveytime I take it, its the taste texture everything, just can't keep it down!🤢

BettylovesAugust · 14/04/2023 11:14

@LucindaE Thank you. Its not my first pregnancy, I’ve had morning sickness in previous pregnancies but nothing like this. I’ve read the spiel, thank you. I think one of the hardest things is how lonely and endless it feels. I was thinking of your castle last night and imagining my baby in my arms. I do sympathise with those who get HG with their first pregnancies- I honestly am not sure if I would’ve coped, and I almost certainly wouldn’t have gone on to have more children.

@Puddinandpie My Gp has prescribed antiemetics to compliment each other (I have four different ones now) + anti reflux. But tbh I just stick to the ones that are most effective and have the least side effects as I was like a zombie with the cocktail I was on. In terms of hospitals, I understood we have a right to choose but maternity care can remain locally. I am also in NE London and have local friends who have given birth in UCLh, Royal London, Homerton, Whipps, North Middlesex etc. I would double check this with your midwife. If you are in Tottenham, have you visited North Mid? I was admitted there recently and was pleasantly surprised by how clean it was and how attentive and courteous the staff were.

Puddinandpie · 14/04/2023 11:36

@BettylovesAugust that's good to know, I have heard utter horror stories of North middlesex and my si who is a matron midwife said it was horrendous when she was there and when I got referred there for endo the drs were to put it blunt a joke! I checked the cqc it was rated soooo poorly it just put me off as this is my 4th csection and I always have bloody complications, I can't afford for anything to go wrong! That's why I was looking at homerton as on the cqc it's awarded outstanding and my si now works there too! Another one I looked at is uclh if all else fails do you know or have heard what that's like!?
