I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@IHaveBeenFallingFor30Minutes I bet you're on a countdown! Well done for making it so far ❤️❤️

Charlotte1256 · 08/01/2023 19:13

@IHaveBeenFallingFor30Minutes not long for you at all! Nearly there!!

I’m now trying taking my Stemetil and Cyclizine alternatively every 4 hours, so still leaving 8 hours between each medication but trying them in combination. My auntie who is a midwife said this was okay and I will double check with my consultant tomorrow but hopefully it helps as previously I’ve been using one or the other x

LucindaE · 08/01/2023 20:03

Heartbroken22 Sorry about chest infection and unsympathetic husband. I hope he improves.
PumpkinDart I'm glad your husband improved. Can you avoid going in?
mallowmoon ...And yours!
Charlotte1256 Sorry you feel so bad. I hope that combination works. I think you need your sick note renewed as well.
IHaveBeenFallingForThirtyMinutes Thank you. I am glad that this thread is helping. Much sympathy it hasn't eased off at twenty weeks as it did with your first pregnancy.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

Thanks @LucindaE I'm probably going to have to extend my time off, not that I want to I haven't been in this role for very long but I've been bed bound most of the weekend. @Charlotte1256 I hope you start feeling better soon x

MrsJdot · 09/01/2023 00:00

@PumpkinDart hi, I read that you had 4 HG pregnancies, how do you manage?
This is my second pregnancy and I was admitted to the hospital due to dehydration, told my husband I don’t want any more kids after this one, and he goes he would love to have 5-6 kids.

I can’t imagine putting myself through so much physical and emotional stress. 😐

PumpkinDart · 09/01/2023 08:28

Hi @MrsJdot yes this is my 5th baby (very much unexpected and unplanned). In all honesty they've varied so much if they'd all been as bad as the first I'd definitely not have done it.

Pregnancy #1 was complete and utter hell, I was on the bathroom floor/ in hospital for most of it. I threw up until the day she was born it was just the worst, I had some anti sickness but it didn't work and I had an over cautious doctor who was loathe to do anything other than sign me off work.

Pregnancy 2 and 3 were rough but improved massively by 2nd trimester, my GP put me on preventative meds, I knew my body and got fluids straight away, in the first I made mistakes like waiting 12+ hours in A&E instead of going via GP and EPU.

Pregnancy 4 I literally just had awful sickness for the first trimester and was fine for the rest of it.

This pregnancy is up there with my first, actually I've been hospitalised more in my first tri this time than the first. These would be my tips I wish I'd known from the beginning:

Get the antiemetics as soon as you find out your pregnant if you have had HG previously.

If one type isn't working pressure to change

Don't guilt yourself over what you can eat, in my first I felt dreadful that I could only eat Pot Noodles, eat what you can stomach, baby gets what it needs.

If you feel sick, don't put it off. I've taken to just going with "right come on let's get it over with" rather than "please don't be sick".

Constipation makes it worse, Laxido/ Lactulose/ Fibrogel whatever you need if you start to feel backed up try and take it.

Antacid helps massively.

Rest as much as you can. Don't feel guilty about your children, mine are little but even my 3 year old shows empathy about it and asks me every day how I am.

I'll be honest though this pregnancy feels a step too far, my body and mental health are struggling. I know that there's light at the end of the tunnel but it feels like a very long tunnel at the moment 😭

heartbroken22 · 09/01/2023 12:34

Thanks guys for your support ❤️ I'll pop into write more later. I'm 14 weeks but still can't cook anything. I open the fridge and feel sick. Never relied so much on takeaway. Just taking small bites out of an apple right now. Hope we all feel better soon.

LucindaE · 09/01/2023 19:07

heartbroken22 Sympathies.
PumpkinDart I hope you got a sick note. Great advice. You deserve a medal.
MrsJdot That wasn't the most sensitive of comments from your husband in the circumstances!

Just an update, I’m now around 12w 2d, actual sickness isn’t very bad really like it was in my previous 2 pregnancies but I am floored with all day nausea, and I also have a 10m old baby which is haaard when your feeling rubbish.. I’m currently 23lbs down as I’m struggling to eat so back, dr kept refusing ondansetron but today I spoke to the GP and I wasn’t taking no for an answer and she’s eventually prescribed it, my goodness I feel like crying I’m so happy 🤣💃🏻

LucindaE · 10/01/2023 15:10

Mamaoftwoo My goodness, it must be hard with a ten month old, and I am so glad you have got Ondansetron. That's a big weight loss.

GPS weren’t concerned about weight loss as I was overweight pre pregnancy 🫣 at least I now have some different meds to try 💃🏻

LucindaE · 11/01/2023 21:09

Mamaoftwooo I do hope they work for you. They've helped so many on here.

OP posts:
PumpkinDart · 11/01/2023 21:12

@Mamaoftwooo my GP and midwife didn't seem to mind the weight loss since I was carrying too much to begin with (and still with an overweight BMI after dropping a lot first tri- thank you thyroid meds). I hope the Ondansetron works for you, head off the constipation from the start by getting Fibrogel/ Laxido/ Lactulose prescribed as the constipation is a nightmare but also makes my nausea and sickness worse.

I'm 13 weeks now and have my scan tomorrow, fingers crossed for good news 🤞

LucindaE · 11/01/2023 21:13

Mamaoftwooo I forgot to say - do make sure you stock up on laxatives, if you haven't tried this one before. Many can't stand Fibregel etc. There's Lactulose, and there are those suppositories from a chemists - but pharmacists can be wary of giving them tto pregnant women, though they use them in hospitals.

@LucindaE seasoned HG pros 😂 agreed Fibrogel texture is absolutely rank, Laxido was less offensive but still bleugh. My consultant at the hospital mentioned antiemetic suppositories, apparently taboo in the UK but widely used in France. Hoping to see the same consultant tomorrow and see if you can get it via NHS, I think I'd stick anything up my bum to stop the sickness 😂

Thank you for your support as always 😘

Thanks for the advice, with my first pregnancy when on ondansetron I was constipated bad, my second pregnancy on it I didn’t seem to struggle at all.

I don’t have my NHS scan until 13+6 so I had a private scan yesterday at 12+5, I had a miscarriage a couple of months back so my anxiety was so bad I couldn’t wait for my NHS one. All was well so that was amazing ♥️

good luck for your scan today ♥️♥️♥️

Hi, can I ask some advice. I haven’t read through all this thread so please excuse if this has been asked and answered. I don’t have HG but I’m really struggling with sickness. I started getting really bad nausea from before I was 4 weeks I’m just over 6 weeks now and from 3 days ago the vomiting started. I just feel sick all day long and the smell of food is a huge trigger for my vomiting. I’ve already threw up 3 times this morning within a couple of hours. Can someone please recommend something I can eat or drink first thing in the morning that can settle my stomach. No one knows I’m pregnant only my dh, we had 2 miscarriages last year and I just don’t want to tell my family and then things to go wrong so can’t really ask for help but we have a 16 month old and I struggling making his dinners etc. I never had any nausea or sickness with any of my pregnancies before so this is a shock to me. Please give me some wisdom 😂

MrsJdot · 12/01/2023 15:55

@PumpkinDart thank you for the response, honestly I am feeling so weak, the cyclizine and prochlorperazine weren’t working, got it changed to metoclopramide, had one dose and still vomiting everything I eat, I think at this rate I will be back at the hospital for fluids.

I have had enough. :(

PumpkinDart · 12/01/2023 17:12

@MrsJdot that sounds awful. Metclopromide did nothing for me (other than one hell of an allergic reaction). I hope that they can find something that works for you and get the fluids if you need them.

I had my scan today 🥰 baby was so active! New due date 17th July.

LucindaE · 12/01/2023 20:38

Welcome to Luna57 and twoundertwohowscary. Sorry you are suffering.
Lunda57 Do ask for meds. Everyone is very supportive on here. Here is my normal spiel, which I hope will be useful. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, frozen smoothie ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommende), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry or chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings and dry cereeal.
twoundertwohowscary I am not sure if it is your first Hyperemesis pregnancy so I don't know if my normal spiel above will be useful to you,. That sounds awful. I hope they give you more effective meds soon.
PumpkinDart Happy news about the scan. I'll add your date.
Mamaoftwoo I'm glad that early scan was reassuring.
Mrsjdot Sorry that things are so bad at the moment. I hope you get some relief soon.

@Luna57 sorry you’re feeling so nauseous and that you’ve started being sick - if it carries on I’d definitely ask for medication to help as it’s easier managed if you can get on top of it early rather than trying to bring it back down after it’s got out of control. I’m on medication, but I found something plain like digestive biscuit or toasted pancake or plain white toast eaten in bed before I got up sometimes took the edge off. Even if you can eat and then lie down/go back to sleep for a bit I found that helped. For drinking, I couldn’t stomach water but sipping soda water or ribena seemed to stay down best (appreciate they’re not ideal first thing!). I really hope it drops off for you before too long 💐
