I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

I’m feeling quite down about things this evening, I struggled with nausea so much 7-11 weeks, now I’m nearing 12 weeks I’ve started vomiting even when I’ve taken Stemetil, only one or so ‘session’ a day but probably about 4 productive heaves and a couple of dry heaves. I really had my hopes pinned on getting to the 12 week mark and starting to feel better however I know that is not the case for a lot of us x

QueenBee22 · 29/12/2022 19:16

@Charlotte1256 if you are getting no relief from the stemetil ask for something stronger. I found it no help on my last pregnancy either and had to change meds.

Charlotte1256 · 29/12/2022 19:21

@QueenBee22 thank you, they’ve been reluctant to prescribe anything else (so far had cyclizine & Stemetil) until I am over 12 weeks, I will be 12 weeks on Sunday so I think I may try and ring my GP tomorrow. I’ve heard Ondansatron is helpful, but I’m a bit of a worrier and it’s my first pregnancy so I worry about any side effects on the baby but I really need to be able to function more normally than I am now so if I need medication to do that then so be it

PumpkinDart · 29/12/2022 19:26

The risk with Ondansetron from 12 weeks is very low I think. I hope you feel better soon Charlotte. It's rubbish when you're holding out for 12/ 16/ 20 weeks but don't get relief. I remember my eldest I was sick through to bloody labour (then after I was ravenous and ate a full pizza and tube of Pringles). I hope things settle down and you get meds that work for you!

FarmWife23 · 29/12/2022 19:51

Hi all, I’ve had a couple of weeks from weeks 28-30 of no vomiting (just constantly nauseous, loads of saliva and the grim taste in my mouth), but started being vomiting again on Christmas Day and it’s getting worse. Did anyone else find baby’s movements triggered vomiting? It feels like no matter how little I eat at a time/what I eat, I’m constantly very full, and then his wriggling just tips it over the edge. 31 weeks this weekend so just keep telling myself the end is in sight…

Charlotte1256 · 30/12/2022 09:47

Managed to speak to a GP this morning, they explained that they are reluctant to give Ondansatron until 14 weeks however have prescribed domperidone to try in the meantime, has anyone tried this before please? I’ll continue to muddle through, he was very understanding thankfully and has done me another sick note for work so one less thing to worry about.

LucindaE · 30/12/2022 17:38

Charlotte1256 Some have been helped by that. I wonder if it was an expense issue that prevented the doctor from prescribing Xonvea, which was designed especially for pregnnacy.
FarmWife Sorry to hear that the movements set things off. They have for some sufferers on here. Can they increase the meds or add anything if things are getting bad again?
Waves to PumpkinDart and for QueenBee22 and everyone.

Hi all, new here. Due 23rd May so almost half way through. Have been vomiting since about week 7. I'm taking cyclizine 3 times daily but some days it doesn't work, and if I miss a dose then I well and truly know about it.
Didn't consider myself to have HG as haven't had to be hospitalised.
Have had an awful week of vomiting most days this week, headaches and just not being able to do anything. Plan to call GP on Tuesday and see about having other meds to add in on the bad days.
Hoping i don't have another 20 weeks of this 😫

LemonDrizz · 30/12/2022 18:45

Should add I'm also on 40mg per day of omeprazole.

QueenBee22 · 30/12/2022 19:09

@Charlotte1256 anti nausea meds are perfectly safe during pregnancy. I took them for months on my last pregnancy and they had absolutely no effect on my now toddler so don't even think like that. It is most important that you are well, definitely tell your consultant/midwife the stemetil is not working and you need something different.

LucindaE · 31/12/2022 21:06

LemonDrizz Welcome. Sorry you are still suffering. Don't be discouraged, as some improve after twenty weeks. It certainly seems worth asking for additional meds. Fortunately, it is possible, now that doctors do give medication more willingly, to have Hyperemesis and avoid being hospitalised. I am glad you have been given a good anti acid. There is lots of support on here. I don't know if this is your first Hypermesis pregnancy or first pregnancy, but I attach my normal spiel just in case. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, frozen smoothie ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange (M and S has been recommende), 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of strawberry or chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings and dry cereeal.
Waves to QueenBee22 and everyone. Have as Happy a New Year as you can!

@LucindaE How often would you recommend eating? On my last pregnancy I would have small snacks every 2 hours but I am wondering should I be eating more often. Had bad nausea all day today and vomited as well for the first time this pregnancy. It was a matter of time.

LucindaE · 01/01/2023 18:57

QueenBee22 Sorry to hear that. I think every two hours seems like a really good plan.

Babytwodue · 02/01/2023 12:52

How is everyone doing? Is anyone planning to go back to work tomorrow 🤦🏻‍♀️
I never did a day in the office with my first pregnancy as it was during Covid …. So tomorrow will be ….interesting!
I’m 7+3 and the pre-emptive meds have definitely helped, I’m nauseous but not all the time, there has been some retching, food aversions and my sense of smell is insane, but so far things seem to be better this time around as I was already vomiting alot by this point 🤞🏻
@Charlotte1256 I think you mentioned earlier in the thread about getting to the 12 week mark. I remember feeling the same and I actually had the worst couple of days after my initial scan, the anxiety played a part and always made me much sicker! I then took a couple of weeks off work and got lots of rest, by week 15 I was vomiting sparingly and could often pinpoint what had triggered it ….being too hot or smells etc. I hope things improve soon!

Charlotte1256 · 02/01/2023 14:30

@Babytwodue I’m having a terrible day today at 12 + 1 ☹️ I am due back to work tomorrow but think I will need to speak to my boss and explain I’m still not well enough, they’re very understanding but this will be week 6 off work for me so not ideal and I will now be on statutory sick pay too. I actually had a good day yesterday though without needing to take any meds, which is why I think I feel more upset that I feel so unwell today. Keep going everyone we will get there xx

PumpkinDart · 02/01/2023 16:40

Hi Babytwodue I'm back in work on the 9th and so torn, I feel a bit better but not 100% I don't want to go back too soon and end up ten steps back. I've been hospitalised 3 times in the last month overnight for fluids each time I've been so dehydrated so head is telling me stay off but my heart wants to go back to work. It's such a hard balance! If you do go back try and take it easy and listen to your body xx

Babytwodue · 02/01/2023 17:32

@Charlotte1256 sorry you’re feeling bad, it’s so awful. Have you thought about taking the meds even on the good days so they stay in your system? The good thing is that you had a better day, Lucinda used to tell me that it’s usually a sign of better things ahead 🤞🏻
@PumpkinDart 😞 it’s such a tough thing to balance. Could you stretch another week off to make sure you don’t overdo it? It sounds like you really need it, especially with all the hospitalisations!
Thank you, I have definitely learnt a lot from my last HG pregnancy and have been resting as much as possible with a 2 year old. He’s staying at his Nanny’s tonight so I can tackle the early start without having to worry about him too x

LucindaE · 02/01/2023 20:16

Great advice from everyone. As always, Mother Hen says don't rush back to work and overdo it and as PumpkinDart says, put yourselves 10 steps back. Do take care, Babytwodue if you have to go back. I hope they're giving you reduced duties, or a similar arrangement. Fingers crossed over my mantra of ' a good day being so often a sign of more to come' for Charlotte1256.

Uh I've been struggling the last couple of days. I have a slight cough and if I cough maximum two times I'm physically sick for about 20 mins. I'm trying to swallow back coughs but it's just like clockwork, cough twice, bam pain in the stomach and a minute later everything comes up 😭

LucindaE · 03/01/2023 19:44

PumpkinDart Oh no: are you back at work? Doesn't sound like you should be.

OP posts:
QueenBee22 · 03/01/2023 20:03

@PumpkinDart I had a chest infection for 2 weeks and my nausea increased massively during that time and I also started vomiting. Once the coughing eased, the nausea eased off hugely. I am only nauseous now if I don't eat every two hours. Hopefully once your cough gets better your tummy will be better too.

PumpkinDart · 03/01/2023 20:27

@LucindaE no I'm due back Monday although my kids are home this week so I'm not sure what's more stressful 😂

@QueenBee22 hopefully the cough disappears it's one of these lingering something and nothing coughs but it's making me so sick.

LucindaE · 04/01/2023 21:20

PumpkinDart I hope the cough eases and hel;ps with the sickness, as
with QueenBee22.

Thank you guys for your support on my rough days. I've had a few good days and now a bad day today. I can't seem to keep down any vitamins so have stopped. Also have really frothy vomit. I'm supposed to take aspirin too but can't quite manage it. I had to leave a supermarket today because the smell really got to me...ended up vomiting in my car in a bag 6-7 times. Im 14 weeks tomorrow and I suddenly don't want to eat anything. Had cravings before but now I'm not hungry. Is all of this normal?

LucindaE · 05/01/2023 19:37

heartbroken22 Anti-acids can give you frothy vomit. Sorry to hear about this bad day. I hope tomorrow is a better one.
