Ahh it's so tricky isn't it @Dreamingof3 the distance to hospital feels like catch 22.
Hope you get vbac if that's what your wishes are 🙏

@iratepirate currently halfway through the book Why Homebirth Matters by Natalie Meddings and would really recommend. Very balanced book, weighing up options thoughtfully and with research. Reading it is making me excited about it all actually!

Homebirth sounds lovely but I hope if anyone is classed high risk they will still go to the hospital, I hope the book says that too?

I’m high risk and wasnt even allowed to have a pool birth at the hospital.

As I needed to be monitored the whole time, and they were right, my and baby’s bp dipped after getting an epidural. I was so exhausted that when they asked me, I didn’t notice any difference, fortunately they gave us something to bring it back up. Without the monitor I would have had no idea we were in danger, specially the baby.

and it was such a long exhausting labour for both of us, something else could have happened, couldn’t have needed emcs.

my DD was so tired as well that after she fed, she slept for 4.5 hours (and so did I), could have slept more probably but the midwife woke her up for her heel prick test.
It will take another 8 months before she slept that much again

CristinaNov182 · 26/10/2022 11:51

Anyone has their 20 weeks scans next week?

LittleAcorn20 · 26/10/2022 11:58

@CristinaNov182 it depends why you are homebirth as to whether homebirth is risky.
Also, I was classed as high risk during my first pregnancy for low BMI but signed off by the consultant at around 34 weeks back to midwife led care. My complications of low BMI and babies low birth weight will be monitored and then if consultant is happy to sign me off pre-birth then I'll be in a better position to choose.
I'll be listening to all expert advice but my birth is my choice.
Baby can still be well monitored at a home birth.

LittleAcorn20 · 26/10/2022 11:59

Should say *depends on why you are high risk

CristinaNov182 · 26/10/2022 12:02

@LittleAcorn20 so you were not classed as high risk after 34 weeks, it’s not the same as someone who is classed as high risk throughout, where they don’t go from high to low as you.

it’s good the baby will be monitored but if it takes time to get help than that should be considered too.

im only 5-10mins from the hospital by car and indeed I would love to have a home birth if I were low risk, but as it is I won’t.

ofc your birth is your choice, just saying everyone should have all info before deciding. And I hope the books is saying that too, and not minimising where risks exist.

Hope everyone’s scan goes well 🥰

Babynum2 · 26/10/2022 14:47

For all those worried about movement I am on baby 3 and the feelings i was getting up until 20 weeks i dont think i would have known or noticed if it was baby 1 or even 2. I am now 21+ 3 and only in the last 2 days ive felt big kicks and can now see and feel from the outside. Just for peace of mind!

havanamama · 26/10/2022 14:53

I’m going to be a minority (as it appears here!) and say I want to give birth in the hospital and am happy to have doctors there too. I don’t need a pool, I just hope they let me give birth in a position that’s comfortable in case I struggle on my back.

CristinaNov182 · 26/10/2022 15:00

@havanamama ask for a ball or bring your own, it helps with pain. You can also bring other stuff if you think it will help.

ToffeeEl · 26/10/2022 15:07

@havanamama I'm the same, always admired people having their births at home and seems a lovely thing to be around your family and things. Just not for me, maybe in the future

Room4onemore · 26/10/2022 15:25

My scan is Monday, I can’t wait

LittleAcorn20 · 26/10/2022 15:34

@havanamama they should let you move around. No reason not to. In fact I'd think they would actively encourage it.
I had an IV drip in throughout labour last time and they kept asking me if I'd like to get up and move around, despite the wires. For all the antenatal yoga I did and learning about being active and open during labour, all I wanted to do was lie on the bed on my side... I've since learnt that this is also a very favourable position to birth baby in as it helps open our pelvis. And that what works for one person to help their body open up doesn't work for everyone.

beatingheartbaby · 26/10/2022 15:42

Just had my 20 week scan, always get so nervy lol but all good and they confirmed she is a girl also so exciting. She wasn't playing ball at first so I had to go to the toilet and jump around haha

CristinaNov182 · 26/10/2022 15:56

@beatingheartbaby congrats, such a relief!

i can’t seem to remember, do I need a full bladder or not? (For the 20 week one)

beatingheartbaby · 26/10/2022 16:20

Thanks it really is.

I didn't go with a full bladder but when I got there they asked me not to go to the toilet until the sonographer had checked and then I ended up having to go empty my bladder mis scan

CristinaNov182 · 26/10/2022 16:24

Aha, thank you.

found it on nhs as well

You may need to have a full bladder when you come for the appointment. The doctor or midwife looking after you will let you know before you come. If you're not sure, you can contact them and ask.

^^

Bobduncan · 26/10/2022 17:52

Just had my whooping cough and flu jabs - one in each arm! Hoping they don't ache too much tomorrow 🙏 the nurse didn't bat an eyelid when I said I'm only 18 weeks thankfully. I was worried she would turn me away and make me rebook in 2 weeks time after some of the advice other people have had on this board!

Ill go one better, I’m having a C-section hopefully for maternal reasons. I am super anxious about giving birth. I never ever have managed to get any pain relief. And have had 3 massive babies. I hate the lack of control. So I’m opting for a section. All these Hypnobirthing homebirth etc ladies I could never. I want every single drug and to feel as less pain as possible.
