Biggest shock of my life

I've joined this group specifically because I need to talk about what I've just discovered - 44 years old, unprotected s$x with my husband for well over 20 years (had a miscarriage with him when I was 21) - resigned myself to never having a baby of my own. Every time a friend or colleague got pregnant I became more comfortable with it just being me and him for the rest of our lives....
I thought my period was due, sore boobs etc. Had some very light spotting yesterday which I assumed was the start of my period, then nothing. Realised period was late (usually 28 days like clockwork), funny taste in my mouth, super sensitive sense of smell. Thought it was in my head but went to get a test anyway (part of me kind of 'knew') - got a very strong positive - didn't believe it so did another. Then went back to get a digital one which says 3+ weeks. I daren't be happy yet, I'm just stunned.

Wow! What a wonderful shock!
Many congratulations

milesmachine · 23/08/2022 16:49

What a wonderful thread!

I'm a later in life mum and absolutely loving it. Although it's tiring, we are more settled as a couple, more financially stable, have a home ready for our unexpected DC, are further along in our careers and I think more confident as people.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't have a fucking clue on a lot of things but I feel like I had a solid head on my shoulders to cope (vs my chaotic 30s!).

I've also found lots of older mums at DCs nursery which surprised me and has meant we've found a lovely group of friends too

Let us know how it goes telling your DH!

Ihatethenewlook · 23/08/2022 16:54

That’s lovely news OP, but you will feel stunned. Take time and deep breaths. I was 42 when I found out I was having DC3. I was utterly floored and it took me 3 days to tell DH while unpacked my feelings. We had never used contraception in 16 years of marriage yet I’d never conceived naturally before. DC1 and 2 were IVF babies, born after many years of trying and ICSI cycles. We were told we’d never conceive naturally due to male factor infertility. It can happen.

woulducouldushouldu · 23/08/2022 16:59

I'm having a shit day but this made me grin like a Cheshire Cat. I don't know you but I'm so happy for you. Life's a funny thing

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/08/2022 17:01

It happens! A friend of mine had a baby at 47 entirely by mistake.

It’s early days as you say, but fingers crossed for you x

Sswhinesthebest · 23/08/2022 17:02

Yup get that folic acid down you!

How exciting but you are right to be cautious, it’s very early days. Expect the worst and hope for the best until you get to 12 weeks.

Braveheart35 · 23/08/2022 17:07

Lots of good luck wishes, pls update with DH reaction!

PinkButtercups · 23/08/2022 17:08

Wow, congratulations! What a lovely surprise!

From what I am aware (could be wrong) they don't tend to offer early scans if someone is older. Probably later on in pregnancy but not early pregnancy x

clarepetal · 23/08/2022 17:10

This is the beat thread I have ever read. Massive congrats 👏

Picoloangel · 23/08/2022 17:10

I became pregnant with DD (now 11) at 44. Gave birth at 45. Lots of miscarriages before her and just thought it wasn’t going to happen. Congratulations OP. Xxx

Lovingtheglitter · 23/08/2022 17:12

That's fantastic!! Congratulations 🥳

maria156 · 23/08/2022 17:14

Massive congrats 💐and thank you to everyone for sharing such positive stories of conceiving in 40s! 🙏

I’m 42 and ttc, and reading up so much on here and other sites, trying to understand and be realistic of natural chances… this has given me strength and hope to not lose faith for a wee while just yet! 🤞

99redballoonsgobyy · 23/08/2022 17:14

aww how lovely congratulations to you both. This happened to a friend of mine at age 44 and over 20 years of marriage. it was a huge shocked for both of them after years of trying and then giving up. They now have a lovely little dd. 😊

HappyGranny6 · 23/08/2022 17:17

Oh wow OP - I too have just joined specifically to post my absolute delight at hearing your wonderful news. I'm much older than you are and can still remember the overwhelming joy I felt when I found I was pregnant - can't wait for the update when you tell dad to be xx

Thank you for the reassurance :-) Need to just keep calm until the 12 week mark and not try to second guess anything. I'm looking at the tests right now still in disbelief.

Oh OP you've really made my day. How utterly, utterly wonderful. This is going to be just as good as @Omgwhatthehell 's thread where half the nation were gunning for her and baby Brian. I have no idea how on earth you're managing to wait to tell DH in person. Please, please update us with his reaction won't you? Oh and many congratulations to the two of you. x

Bloodybridget · 23/08/2022 17:18

OP, I absolutely wish you a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby.
