Biggest shock of my life

I've joined this group specifically because I need to talk about what I've just discovered - 44 years old, unprotected s$x with my husband for well over 20 years (had a miscarriage with him when I was 21) - resigned myself to never having a baby of my own. Every time a friend or colleague got pregnant I became more comfortable with it just being me and him for the rest of our lives....
I thought my period was due, sore boobs etc. Had some very light spotting yesterday which I assumed was the start of my period, then nothing. Realised period was late (usually 28 days like clockwork), funny taste in my mouth, super sensitive sense of smell. Thought it was in my head but went to get a test anyway (part of me kind of 'knew') - got a very strong positive - didn't believe it so did another. Then went back to get a digital one which says 3+ weeks. I daren't be happy yet, I'm just stunned.

Huge congrats OP. My DSis is in a similar boat to you - but it is child number 2. Same age too. She is probably on here somewhere and is 3 months ahead of you.

I hope it all goes well.

Aww congratulations! It happens more often than you’d think :-)

Massive congratulations, your lovely news has put a huge smile on my face. I'd love to be a fly on your sitting room wall later on when you give hubby the news lol,

Thank you again everyone, I'm overwhelmed with the support from this group. I'm counting down the hours until hubby comes home from work to tell him the news - I know he's going to be just as shocked as I am!

Just amazing ! Congratulations ❤️

SunnyD44 · 23/08/2022 15:16

Oh wow that’s amazing news congratulations!

I know many women who had babies in their 40s and they’re all incredible parents.

It is slightly concerning that this hasn’t happened before apart from one time when you miscarried so I would try not to get your hopes up too much until you are much further on (sorry!).

I’d definitely make a gp appointment asap and start taking folic acid etc.

PeterPomegranate · 23/08/2022 15:17

Congratulations! That’s wonderful news.

I had my second son when I was aged 40 and there seem to be lots of older mums these days

spiderlight · 23/08/2022 15:19

How exciting! Congratulations! My mum had a similar shock at 46, after 14 years of trying, and here I am! Her doctor told her I was the menopause 😆

violetcuriosity · 23/08/2022 15:19

How amazing! Good luck x

ChimChimeny · 23/08/2022 15:20

I literally got goosebumps reading this, what lovely news. Keeping my fingers crossed for you 🥳

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 23/08/2022 15:22

Congratulations!

If you google your city/county + maternity services you should be able to self refer to your midwifery services so you can get your booking in appt sorted, usually takes place around 8 weeks pregnant, with the delayed booking/waiting times for everything in the NHS at the moment it's worth getting the ball rolling so you can get the 12 week scan booked in.

catsnore · 23/08/2022 15:32

Congratulations!!!! I had a similar shock at 42 😂 gave birth in January. It's the best surprise of my life! Wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy with not too much throwing up.
