Biggest shock of my life

I've joined this group specifically because I need to talk about what I've just discovered - 44 years old, unprotected s$x with my husband for well over 20 years (had a miscarriage with him when I was 21) - resigned myself to never having a baby of my own. Every time a friend or colleague got pregnant I became more comfortable with it just being me and him for the rest of our lives....
I thought my period was due, sore boobs etc. Had some very light spotting yesterday which I assumed was the start of my period, then nothing. Realised period was late (usually 28 days like clockwork), funny taste in my mouth, super sensitive sense of smell. Thought it was in my head but went to get a test anyway (part of me kind of 'knew') - got a very strong positive - didn't believe it so did another. Then went back to get a digital one which says 3+ weeks. I daren't be happy yet, I'm just stunned.

Film when you tell your husband - something to look back on in the future. Congratulations

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 23/08/2022 15:42

Awww so happy for you! That'll be such wonderful news to share with your DH too Smile

I had my twins at 40 (you never know...!) - hope it all goes super smoothly for you too.

Congratulations @Shocked44
The world works in mysterious ways sometimes!

I think @NewMum0305 is referring to my thread. I unexpectedly found out I was pregnant before Christmas. I’m just setting down to an afternoon nap with my gorgeous 4 week old son right now 😊 I still have to pinch myself.

jordini · 23/08/2022 15:51

Congratulations!! What was your mums reaction?

Shocked44 · 23/08/2022 15:54

Oh wow that’s amazing news congratulations!

I know many women who had babies in their 40s and they’re all incredible parents.

It is slightly concerning that this hasn’t happened before apart from one time when you miscarried so I would try not to get your hopes up too much until you are much further on (sorry!).

I’d definitely make a gp appointment asap and start taking folic acid etc.

I'm trying to stay positive - thanks for your word of warning. More to my story than I've published on here though so please stay positive for me.

Seems like it is more common than people think and it's great to hear so many positive stories from others on here. Congratulations on your little one, truly a blessing xx

Huge congratulations! What fabulous news 🥰 you must be thrilled! Can't wait to hear about your husband's reaction (don't rush to tell us though - give yourself time to soak it all in ❤️)

whatamigoing2do · 23/08/2022 16:07

Wow, I had a shock + test this weekend. I am 45 and had a scan this morning and am 5 weeks and 6 days. It's a bit different for me as I have older children but I am going to see what the next scan in 2 weeks shows

HereComesBaby2 · 23/08/2022 16:07

Congratulations to you, i had my youngest when i was 40.
I know of someone who tried for second baby for years and then had a shock at the age of 51! Mum had a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Wow congratulations!
I called the Doctors to register with a midwife and they just made me an appointment to go see them on 19 Sept....should I have been offered a scan as I'm older?

I think I feel more excited by this than when my friend told me she was pregnant a few days ago and you’re a complete stranger 😁

Please let us know how your DH reacts! He’ll probably be lost for words for a while xx

OnTheBrinkOfChange · 23/08/2022 16:27

Congratulations! What a lovely surprise. 💐

Rebelmcstreettuff · 23/08/2022 16:27

Congratulations OP I can feel your excitement through your words.
Everything crossed for you as you have experienced a loss before.
Stay positive ❤

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 23/08/2022 16:31

@Shocked44 they generally don't offer any scans before 12 weeks unless you've had multiple miscarriages or are at risk of an ectopic pregnancy. They base it on date of last period and then use the scan to confirm dates.

You can get a private scan earlier but it's best not to do too early as there may be nothing much to see which can cause more anxiety, there's a big difference in what's visible week to week and even a few days.

annoyedneighbour1 · 23/08/2022 16:35

Thank you so much for the reassurance. I have an appointment booked for 19 Sept so I'll wait until then - I did have an early scan when I was pregnant before (at 21) and the experience wasn't very nice (was referred to an early pregnancy unit who didn't really seem to care - not in a hurry to repeat that to be honest). They said they couldn't see any sign of movement and I was offered a medical evacuation which I deeply regret having heard from people since who've challenged back on it. So it's in the lap of the gods until then and I just have to hope and prey that this time I'm lucky.

Thank you - I'm excited and terrified too which is why I took to this group for a bit of support since I haven't told any of my friends. My mum is also in complete shock and, like me, doesn't want to get too excited just yet x

Congratulations op! Wonderful news!

I seen your earlier post asking if you should get a scan as your older. The nhs will not scan you until you are 12 weeks but you can book an early scan at a private clinic, thier normally around £50. I done that both times as I was too anxious to wait until 12 weeks! Huge congrats again x
