I feel really mean to write that about my baby, I love him more than anything in the world 😰 but we're so tired and just wish we could put him down for 5 minutes. Why doesn't he sleep anywhere but us ...

RoseValleyRambles · 04/07/2022 02:31

Baby has been fussing all day, and I just tried my grobag in 'full swaddle' mode for the first time. He's off to sleep within seconds! Here's hoping it's not just a one off...

RoseValleyRambles · 04/07/2022 02:34

@Laurengame that sounds super tough. Remember it's ok to put him down somewhere safe for a few minutes and a have a break, seven though he cries. They change so quickly at this age hopefully he'll become less glued to you soon. ☹️

RoseValleyRambles · 04/07/2022 09:09

@prema112 What do you do with him when he's awake? I'm struggling with newborn friendly activities :D

beansprout55 · 04/07/2022 10:19

Awwwww congrats @laurenGame - I also wasn't allowed pain relief for the push stage, I thought I was going to die in pain without gas and air (I think I almost did!😂) torturous eh.

I so so feel for you re babies sleep. Have you tried googling for tips? Open a new Mumsnet asking what others did? Praying there's an improvement, you must be exhausted x

Anyone got tips to reduce reflux? I changed baby beansprout 3 times in the middle of the night!!! So weird it only started two days ago this and now it happens after every other feed maybe. Scared to go out as it's impossible to not get it on either myself or him!

Yecats22 · 04/07/2022 10:19

@RoseValleyRambles my little one is 7 weeks today and when he is awake we do tummy time and do some nursery rhymes with actions and generally just chat and make faces, we have some colourful rattles and have just ordered a few other wee maracas etc to play with. He is also quite content kicking away on his play mat or bouncy chair looking at the sky from the patio doors.

beansprout55 · 04/07/2022 10:24

@Yecats22 - how much easier is it, if at all, when babe is 7 weeks? Mine is a week and a half and I'm starting to panic about travelling to Suffolk for a week so baby can meet his grandparents - I'm EBF on demand and of course the tiny one has no pattern and wakes up every 2/3 hours for feeding. Sometimes less.
Does it space out a bit by then and become more manageable? I can't postpone trip either as I go back to work for keep in touch time once a week from week 8.

beansprout55 · 04/07/2022 10:24

Sorry I should mention, we are planning to travel when baby is 6/7 weeks old!

fpeg · 04/07/2022 10:40

@beansprout55 how long is the journey? I'm probably not much help as I've been working on routine since week 2 so have a decent idea of when she's going to need feeding. That said she doesn't always follow the routine 😁 I think if you're on demand just be prepared to stop along the way to feed. I've had a few trips where we've been out of the house for several hours and have just planned places to stop and feed as we go. I suppose even with on demand you could wake them up for a snack if there's a service station that suits? 7.5 weeks old here currently.

What I can definitely say is that by 7 weeks it isn't all brand new any more and you just feel more confident with stuff and in the swing of it (we well I do anyway, FTM). I'd have felt totally overwhelmed by the prospect at your stage but it wouldn't phase me now, so maybe that's the best bit if hope I can give you! 💕

Yecats22 · 04/07/2022 11:11

@beansprout55 I am formula feeding so a bit easier for me when planning trips. I like @fpeg havent been feeding on demand and I know he needs fed every 3 hours through the day but going around 5 hours through the night.

I am also a FTM and agree that I just feel
more confident in what I am doing now it has different challenges at 7 weeks. When Louie was newborn he slept 3 hours at a time but he is a cat napper through the day which can be quite exhausting but he is now getting a little personality which is lovely.

I would take Louie out for the full day now but would have been worried taking more than 1 bottle when he was little.

beansprout55 · 04/07/2022 11:21

Thanks @fpeg and @Yecats22. Really helpful!!

@fpeg I like the idea of a routine - no idea how to implement that with BF. Easier with bottle as you can fill them up, none of this 10 minute snacking 😂 How did you go about it??

The travelling I'm not too anxious about, it's living there for a week and I've only met them once (Covid marriage here and I live in Jersey) - I don't fancy spending the week with strangers in my PJ's with a messy bun, hoping I'll be more organised and have some vague routine but I just can't envisage it right now!! 🙁

fpeg · 04/07/2022 11:28

@beansprout55 if you want to be able to set up a routine I've been following the Gina Ford "the new contented little baby book," I've found it really good and little one is perfectly happy doing it. She only recommends starting when they have regained their birth weight. We aren't religious about the routines but it's really working for us and we are regularly getting 5-6 hours overnight. I did go a bit too far off piste and noticed our nights stayed to deteriorate so I just went back a couple of weeks in the book and worked on a more structured progression again. I was really strict on it for the first couple of weeks to really try and establish the routine but less so afterwards. I'm slightly on the autistic spectrum so I need that routine to try to work to, but am able to be relaxed that it might not always go my way ☺️

People have raised eyebrows at me when I say I'm following her and said "oh so you're following cry it out" and no I'm not and she doesn't advocate it either (they clearly haven't read the book). Anyway thought I'd share with you where I found my routine x

MsBubbles85 · 04/07/2022 11:30

Our little Julia arrived today at 4 am! It was a quick labour and didn't even have the time to have the epidural I wanted...the last 2 days were really bad with contractions but not enough to have me admitted to hospital. It was a hard experience but so worth it!

Thanks! Deffo will look into that! Whatever works for you and baby is what's important xx
I'm desperate for a routine. Finances are tough with DH on sabbatical, so I'm doing 10 Hours a week from 6-12 weeks post birth then I'm back.
Also don't trust DH with baby so I'm doubly anxious. A routine and some structure that he can follow will make us all more relaxed when I go back to work... she says xx

EarlGreywithLemon · 04/07/2022 12:04

@beansprout55 is little one bringing up milk? Our daughter brought up a lot - we went through countless changes a day, both her and me. We saw a paediatric consultant when she was three months old, who diagnosed reflux and talked is through the options: baby Gaviscon, which can give constipation, and he wasn’t keen; Colief, which he recommended and we tried. It didn’t work for us, and it’s a faff to give to a breastfed baby, but some find it helpful. Or Omeprazole- that’s the most effective, but also has side effects - e.g. it can cause agitation and disturbed sleep. In the end, we decided that since she seemed happy in herself, wasn’t suffering and was growing well, we’d just wait for her to grow out of it. She did, the vomiting stopped by about six months, and she’s never had any issues since. In fact she’s not a particularly vomity child now, and rarely catches any tummy bugs. On the other hand, a friend’s son had very severe reflux and Omeprazole helped. But his symptoms were different - he actually didn’t vomit a lot, but had a persistent cough, and cried and struggled a lot. Sorry, this is a very long answer, but my conclusion was that there isn’t a straightforward one size fits all for reflux.

As for travelling at 6-7 weeks, I found that was OK with our daughter (EBF). It’s easy enough to stop and feed her even in the car (stationary car of course!) as needed. In fact I found being out and about with her a breastfed baby was very straightforward. Just needed a changing bag to change her nappy as needed, and we were away.

EarlGreywithLemon · 04/07/2022 13:13

@beansprout55 also, I found it easy enough to visit people and have them visit me. I just retreated to another room if I didn’t want to breastfeed in front of them (or stayed in the same room if I didn’t mind, depending on who they were). I and I found going out with a vomity baby was fine also - I had spare clothes for her in the changing bag, and several muslins to protect me when feeding/burping. I did have to accept some small stains on her clothes every now and again, but it wasn’t really a problem.

Vimto1991 · 04/07/2022 14:14

@MsBubbles85 congrats!! A hard few days but so worth it!

@EarlGreywithLemon i just learnt not taking a spare change of clothes the hard way. Dd just threw up after a feed and it went all down her outfit, on the car seat and my hand. First time she’s thrown up so much, but I hadn’t burped her and she was lying pretty flat the entire feed and after so probably my own doing… 😩

beansprout55 · 04/07/2022 15:52

Thanks @EarlGreywithLemon so so helpful. Just had a chat with MW and she weighed him, gaining so so well despite the spit ups and she also said best to let them grow out of it and it's normal still for them to spit up after every feed! He only does after every other feed at most so he's not even that bad I suppose. x

I don't even wear anything that shows cleavage in general, so BF in public will be hard for anxious me - do you all wear muslins or specially designed covers for breastfeeding in front of others?

InvisibleDragon · 04/07/2022 16:08

@beansprout55 I thought about getting a special cover for breastfeeding (JoJo Maman does an "infinity scarf" one for 20), but I'm too cheap. I went through my collection of scarves instead and found a very wide/long one. Knotted the ends together and good to go. I've used it twice in the car and twice in actual public locations (a park and a shopping centre) and it's been really good. Wide enough to completely cover the front of my body and definitely opaque.

Didn't really want to use a muslin because it's a bit see-through, but a big one would also work well, especially for hot days.

EarlGreywithLemon · 04/07/2022 17:30

@beansprout55 I really didn’t think I’d be comfortable feeding in public, but I found it was fine. It helped that my first outings were with girls from our NCT group and they were all doing the same. Oddly enough I found it more comfortable feeding in a cafe with strangers than in front of certain friends and relatives! But where that was the case, I’d just go to a different room, or corner of the restaurant/cafe. I used muslins and found they worked very well. I didn’t think much, if anything, showed at all (though I may be wrong!)

Vimto1991 · 04/07/2022 17:30

Called the GP about DD’s symptoms and they think it’s colic and reflux so prescribed something for reflux (baby Gavison), and told to use infacol for colic. Didn’t even entertain CMPA as she doesn’t have a rash everywhere (she has a few red spots on her face but more like acne then rash and normally would have a rash on her bum?).
im so worried they’ll misdiagnose her and CMPA will get worse and something severe will happen to her. 😩 I’ve cut out dairy from my own diet, so if I can reduce her formula even more I know she’d be okay… just need to increase my supply somehow. :/

Letsbekindplease · 04/07/2022 17:42

@laurenGame you should order a “love to dream” swaddle. Look at the reviews. A lot of people saying they had a baby that didn’t like being out down and they tried LTDS and it worked for them. It’s expensive but might be worth a go.

EarlGreywithLemon · 04/07/2022 17:47

@Vimto1991 not sure if that helps, but both my babies had baby acne, and vomiting, but no CMPA. We also get as many as 8-9 poos a day (again with both babies) and they are watery - I think they tend to be at this stage.
A friend’s son did have a cow’s milk allergy which did in the end improve by itself. He was diagnosed at around 6 months, and no harm at all came to him.

Vimto1991 · 04/07/2022 17:51

@EarlGreywithLemon that’s reassuring to hear, thank you. Would you say the poos are mucuosy? They all look stringy at the moment and not thick at all. I wonder if it’s because she’s having more breast milk these days. She was having around 7 poos last week, so far only 2 today so has gone down, but same stringy ness.
I think the thing that creeps me out is when she drinks out of the MAM bottle for her too up she is basically wheezing when off the bottle until she is burped, although I have read that can be reflux, just scares me her throat is closing or something. Babies make such scary noises. 😱

EarlGreywithLemon · 04/07/2022 19:36

@Vimto1991 yes, I checked just now when I changed his nappy and there was definitely some stringiness. Mostly very watery though, definitely not solid. And yes to funny, grunty, wheezy noises!!
