I can't get my head around this glucose test...surely drinking water or pottering about is more reflective of reality than just sitting dead still and not even having a drink over that time period? There doesn't seem many circumstances in our real lives where those would be the conditions our body is working under.

Got mine next Weds I think. Really hoping it comes back OK!

TurquoiseDreamCatcher · 14/06/2022 10:54

I'm glad it's not just me that thought not having water was ott. I've just had the second lot of bloods and I have given me a cuppa tea. Then off home to chill in the garden.

HaresHoping · 14/06/2022 12:32

That's so OTT! I had loads of water during mine as I'm always thirsty... oh dear 😬 glad you've got it over and done with now!

That's ridiculous! Had mine yesterday and they made a point of showing everyone where the water fountain was on the way to the waiting room/I drank my 1.5l bottle whilst I was there! They also gave us biscuits when we had finished

TurquoiseDreamCatcher · 14/06/2022 18:36

Hmmm thank you everyone for the feedback on the water situation. I've had a text from the nhs to rate the service for today. I'm going to give them a poor rating for lack of water. I felt quite unwell by the end of three morning and still feel out of sorts now.

madeleine85 · 14/06/2022 18:51

@TurquoiseDreamCatcher sorry you had to deal with that! With my first pregnancy I had HG and had to ask for water to have during the test, which initially they did question, but then were like "ok, just drink it slowly please so it doesn't affect the results". With my second, no one asked/said anything. I wasn't even given instructions about eating before! Sounds like an overzealous team tbh...

Butterflytulip · 14/06/2022 21:03

@TurquoiseDreamCatcher mine was exactly the same as you! No water from midnight the night before! They didn't even offer me water at the end of it! I just had a bottle with me. I was also advised to eat before driving home! Again I had to pop to hospital shop and buy a snack!! Hope your test is negative and you can put the awful experience behind you

TurquoiseDreamCatcher · 14/06/2022 21:07

@madeleine85 @Butterflytulip I think our experiences prove the point that healthcare for women in this country is poor. I'm sorry that you both had bad experiences too.

Hi ladies, so interesting to read the comments about an August vs September baby. I teach in a secondary school and by that point, there really is no correlation with the oldest being the cleverest, so I think it's just the first couple of years it might show. If i could pick, I would pick for baby to be born in September rather than come early in August but this is more because I would like them at home/nursery for an extra year! What will be will be I guess. As long as our babies arrive healthy that's all that matters.

PeachP · 15/06/2022 06:22

Hello everyone, long time lurker! I'm due 23rd Sept with first time baby, so will be 26 weeks on Fri.
Wondering a couple of things...

  1. interested to know if anyone else has had guidance about limiting contact outside your households from 28 weeks, because of covid.
  2. a few people mentioned pregnancy yoga/Pilates - do you use online classes or say YouTube and would you recommend? I was doing f2f yoga but my classes have stopped as my teacher is late pregnancy!

Thank you :)

HaresHoping · 15/06/2022 08:48

Hi @PeachP! Congratulations and welcome ☺️

  1. hmm I haven't yet but I have my next midwife appt on Tuesday so will report back! I'm 28+1 now.

  2. I am thoroughly enjoying pregnancy Pilates which is done over Zoom once a week. It's especially for people who have experienced loss, run by 'Finally Pregnant' which you can find on Instagram. I'm sure there will be lots of others out there too ☺️

How are you feeling? Hope it's all gone smoothly so far!

Welcome @PeachP and congrats!

I had my 28 week appointment yesterday (am actually 29 weeks) and the midwife didn't mention that, I fully vaccinated though, so that may be why, but I thought those rules weren't around now

Butterflytulip · 15/06/2022 14:20

In Northern Ireland we can now decide what year our kids start p1. I'm due 8th sept so all being well be a sept baby anyways but will be old for the year as I'll not hold back a year.

28 weeks tomorrow. Went for a short walk this afternoon and the heat has left me exhausted! Be careful in the heat everyone ☀️

legaltigger · 15/06/2022 15:51

I had my 28 week appt on Monday and it wasn't mentioned. I assume that isn't guidance anymore unless you're CEV in which case they'd probably tell you.

I just think it's so weird, like why do they need to create falsely harsh conditions to determine how our bodies deal with glucose? In reality, particularly in this heat, we'd all be drinking something in those hours and if that changes the results then surely that's the reality and is more reflective of how we actually live and the true impacts on our bodies?!!!

Totally second @TurquoiseDreamCatcher 's comment about it showing how rubbish healthcare for women can be in the UK.

madeleine85 · 15/06/2022 17:13

@PeachP welcome and congratulations! Re. covid boosters and restrictions, I spoke to my doctor at my 28 week checkup (based in the US so may be different). My last booster was in October last year, so fair to say it has likely worn off. I'm eligible for another one due to the pregnancy, but I want to time it to try give maximum protection to me in the last month of pregnancy, and to pass antibodies to the baby as he won't get vaccinated for at least 6 months by the sounds of it. I think for that reason I am going to get the booster in early-mid July, and from personal choice, I am just going to wear a mask to do the weekly shopping/see people indoors in the final month. The absolute last thing I want is to be giving birth with covid, be in hospital masked 24/7 etc (watch now as this happens, would be just my luck!). The doctor did say that they are noticing it seems to move in 2 month long waves of peaks and troughs. Right now we have a peak where I am, and will likely have this through July, so hoping that August and September are better months for it and are just safer in general. I have a toddler in daycare, and another child had it in her class last week, and we were all feeling a bit not great, so in all honesty, we probably had it recently and just didn't know.

PeachP · 15/06/2022 17:57

Thanks everyone that's helpful! :)

To explain - I commute on public transport in London and was working in the office 4 days a week (but can WFH) - and my midwife said at my booking appt that I would need to WFH to avoid public transport and "minimise all contact outside my household, both social and work related" from 28 weeks onwards. At my last midwife appt she said the official guidance has been removed but if I can WFH full time then she recommends I do, as well as avoiding public transport and minimising extra contacts where I can.

Should say I'm triple jabbed and no reason I'm more clinically vulnerable! I think transmission in my area was quite high so that might have been why.

But anyway I guess we'll all make our own decisions about the risk, and the midwife was just recommending I don't go crazy. Agreed @madeleine85 I really don't want to get it nearer the end! So think I need to have a think about how I want to play it...

amorningperson · 15/06/2022 17:59

Welcome @PeachP
I was told at my very first appointment that travelling after 28 weeks was now not recommended (I was asking about travelling at 20 weeks and she said was fine) because of risk of covid. I'm also fully vaccinated but I guess it's an extra precaution. I'll be 28 wks next week and I decided not to go to a few weddings we had been invited to this summer but mainly because I'd rather just chill at home with my DC and dog than have to dress up my swollen 36 week ham feet and stay sober all night haha! I'll probs wear a mask in big crowds too @madeleine85 from then onward - or just avoid big crowded places.

Anyone else feeling more and more like not seeing anyone, just naturally (not covid related I mean). All I want to do is: tidy up and look at baby things, hang out with DH and DC and pets, and very VERY close friends. I have a LOT of trouble with small talk, feel exhausted and stressed even at the thought. I remember being text reply/phone call/socially anxious last time so I think it's just coming on a bit earlier as all things with this pregnancy.

What has everyone been doing that's been feeling so good? Walking SLOWLY listening to podcasts has been good, gardening, looking through old baby stuff and drinking decaf frappucinos from Starbucks has been the best recently for me :)

legaltigger · 15/06/2022 18:25

Yeah I don't want to go anywhere really. I've got tonnes of things to go to and family to see so I will be but people are trying to get me to agree to going to london for a day etc and I'm just like nooooo thanks.

TurquoiseDreamCatcher · 15/06/2022 19:32

Ladies, I've just had a call from the hospital to say I've got GD. I know there are a few other on here who have it. Please can you give me some breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas so I can behave myself until my appointment at the hospital?

madeleine85 · 15/06/2022 19:43

@amorningperson lol at ham feet. I’ve been taking short dog walks. Want more but I’ve screwed up my ankle, though I think it’s just complaining at the extra weight 🤦‍♀️.

@TurquoiseDreamCatchergah so sorry to hear that!

@PeachP i kinda love being a hermit so this plays well to my “I want to stay home alone” mentality.

Butterflytulip · 15/06/2022 19:57

Ahhh no @TurquoiseDreamCatcher
It's not too bad, it's just knowing how much carbs you can tolerate.
What does your diet look like now ?

Butterflytulip · 15/06/2022 20:00

@PeachP welcome and congrats.
I'm triple jabbed too however my last jab was in Dec so I'm likely to be totally not covered now. My GP hasn't called me for another booster and to be honest with my little girl in nursery bringing home all sorts there's not much I can avoid! Will prob avoid crowded areas and try to WFH.

TurquoiseDreamCatcher · 15/06/2022 20:19

I am a chocoholic - holds hands up!

Normal meals for me
Breakfast: weetabix made with hot water and dash of honey.

Lunch: ham, mushroom pasta made with soft cheese

Dinner: hunters chicken with herby potato's and cheese.

I'll have around 2 cups of tea a day, 1 orange juice and lots of water.

Butterflytulip · 15/06/2022 21:30

@TurquoiseDreamCatcher you'll get lots of support from the dietician who you will see at your next appt.

I find eating 4 small meals and 2 snacks is the only way i can manage. I want to try and diet control again to avoid insulin. They'll keep an eye on baby growth to make sure baby isn't getting too much sugar from you and getting too big.

For breakfast I usually have eggs, avocado and wholemeal toast (1 slice as 2 slices puts me over the edge!)
Then if hungry I'll have piece of fruit or veggie sticks with Humous.
Lunch usually salmon / chicken salad
Afternoon snack Alpen cereal bar or nature valley protein bar with decaf coffee.
Dinner, fish/chicken/veggie alternative/spag Bol with lots of veg mainly green and sweet potatoes. Also drink lots of water.

This isn't the time to be radically changing your diet. You might just have to start on medications and or insulin injections to cope with the carbs. Just ask lots of questions at your appt 😊
