Today, at the small children’s playground, I saw three different mothers, at three different times, encourage their no-longer--in-nappies son to “have a wee” against the tree INSIDE THE FENCED IN PLAY AREA before they left the playground!!!

There are public restrooms nearby, and a myriad of wee-on-the-go vessels available.

Is this normal?

Why would we teach children to commit public urination?

Am I the only one who is horrified by this?

My son loves plants and likes to go up and touch trees to feel the texture of the bark and to pick up fallen leaves. I would have thought that if any tree would be wee-free, it would be the tree inside the fenced-in, no-dogs-allowed, children-must-be-accompanied-by-a-parent, adults-only-allowed-when-with-children, small-kids-only playground.

🤢

TunaJacket · 29/07/2023 20:55

Oh wow.... that is.... i dont really know what to say!

But that is not okay 😂

YfenniChristie · 31/07/2023 19:54

@aNewYorkerInLondon That's grim! 🤢 Never heard anything like it.

Picked up DS from nursery today - he's fine but because he's had two nappies with loose poo, we have to keep him at home for 48hrs. 🤦🏼‍♀️ My parents have agreed to have him for the next 2 days, which I'm really grateful for but they can't get here til midmorning and want to leave before rush hour. So I'll be late into work and then leaving early.

I'm lucky work is very flexible and understanding, but this month has been a real struggle (he was off for a week earlier this month too) and I feel like I'm barely keeping my head above water. This week has minimal meetings so was meant to be my catch up week and now I'm going to fall further behind. 😩

aNewYorkerInLondon · 31/07/2023 22:37

@YfenniChristie , I'm sorry! That is so frustrating. I know that for actual diarrhea they have to stay home 2 days, and for good reason too, but how to they determine "loose?"

YfenniChristie · 01/08/2023 06:55

@aNewYorkerInLondon In this instance, it wasn't a diarrhea/liquid poo but it didn't have any structure, if that makes sense? It also smelt sour apparently. I understand why they have these measures in place, but it's so frustrating (even more so when DS hasn't pooed since he got home!)

Luckygreenduck · 05/09/2023 21:43

How is everyone doing? Just wondered how talking was going for everyone. We have had the odd word but he doesn't seem to regular say them. So we have had mummy, daddy, nanny, no, up, digger, hiya but he doesn't say them regularly. Almost like he will say them a few times then forgets.

Bubbasmama2017 · 06/09/2023 05:17

@Luckygreenduck we've had a few words too - cat, dog, look, mama, dada - they say them for a few days then forget them again it seems.
We're really struggling with early wakes (pre 5am some days now but generally between 5-5.30) would anyone share their routine with naps and bedtimes please so I can see if I'm doing something wrong? I think she is a low sleep needs baby possibly

Luckygreenduck · 06/09/2023 05:51

We are quite relaxed about naps so they fit into whatever we are doing that day but usually;
Bedtime 7pm
Couple of quick wakes in the night for milk (around 11, 3, 5)
Wake for the day at 7 but those last 2 hours are usually in our bed.

Naps are either a short morning one around 10 and longer one at 2 or around 2 hours at 12.30. If he sleeps well then the one after lunch is ideal but I don't stop him if he wants a morning snooze especially if we are in the car or on a walk. Nursery have moved him to one nap after lunch most days but again if he is tired he has a short morning one on a pram walk.

I definitely thought sleep would be a bit easier by now! But I am grateful he settles easily. I think my one just likes cuddles and still needs a bit of reassurance in the night.

Luckygreenduck · 06/09/2023 05:53

@Bubbasmama2017 thanks that's sounds really similar to us so good to know it's normal! I was a bit concerned he seemed to have stopped saying some words.

YfenniChristie · 06/09/2023 08:30

We have a couple of words - mama, mummy, hi, bye, dog, yeah and no. DS knows and says dada but much prefers to call DH mama 🤷🏼‍♀️ He also seems to be gearing up to bath (we have baaaa a lot) and he barks when he sees a dog. He's a very chatty little boy!

We have a very relaxed structure here. DS usually gets up at 6am. If he's in nursery, he'll usually go down for a nap between 11am and midday and will sleep for an hour (he napped for nearly 3hrs the other week and the nursery were really surprised/concerned). If he's at home, he'll go down for a nap anytime between 10am and 11am (sometimes up to midday) and will sleep for 2-2.5hrs. He'll then go to bed any time between 7pm and 9pm depending on mood.

aNewYorkerInLondon · 06/09/2023 12:01

My cheeky boy had me really worried because he was basically not speaking at all.
One day, I was picking him up from nursery, and his carer was telling me, “oh mami! He is such a sweet boy. He just said bye to everyone on our way out!”
I said, “hang on, he actually said, ‘bye’ to them?” And she said, “yes mami!”
apparently, he says many words at nursery, just not at home! They gave me a list! 🙊

Since then, he is now speaking a bit more at home too. Seems they really are on their own track.

GinnyBee · 07/09/2023 19:05

Mine is super chatty and in the past two weeks has started copying words much much more than before, and learnt so many new ones that he now uses correctly too. He's been saying ball, down, dog, no, shoe, hat, brum brum, horse (sounds like hoe though lol!) and many animal sounds for a long time, and now just suddenly has added so many more! Mama, daddy (before every adult was dada), tractor (ta-daaa), car, phone, beans, cheese, sock, bike, hand, and ty which is his first start of a Finnish word that means 'empty'. He also constantly copies what we say, but most of those don't stick.

Our schedule is roughly
6-7am wake up
11-12.30 nap
7 bedtime

He goes to nursery two mornings a week and tends to nap there around half an hour later than at home. He mostly sleeps through or has one wakeup around 10-11pm for cuddles, except when he's teething or ill, which seems to be almost all the time now with nursery bugs 😬

Bubbasmama2017 · 08/09/2023 10:04

Thanks for the responses everyone, back at nursery this week after the school holidays and little one is sleeping in a bit later so hopefully we're on the right path. I think she thrives on a good routine.

Yellowbelly12 · 09/09/2023 06:35

Just wanted to celebrate the first proper night sleep! Went to bed at 715 and didn’t wake until 545. She’s being good for me to have a spa day and night away today ☺️

GinnyBee · 14/09/2023 11:41

Toddler logic: Didn’t nap all day, and instead of sleeping at night we were up practicing words and looking at books from 12-3.15am 🫠🫠🫠😭 then awake for the day at 7.15! Just as well since he goes to nursery on Thursday mornings so I dropped him off at 8 before I even attempted my own breakfast and then called in sick to work. But fucking hell, why don’t they need sleep if they haven’t slept?!?!?? I know his first molars are coming in but he wasn’t grumpy like they were hurting, he just wanted to babble and snuggle, but didn’t drift off to sleep.

YfenniChristie · 14/09/2023 20:29

Oh @GinnyBee that sounds rough! We haven't had that here yet but have had bedtimes that involved spending hours sat in the dark, holding DS while he babbles away and coos at the stars on his ceiling.

Is anyone still breastfeeding? I last fed DS 4 days ago. It's fine. I was expecting it as he'd started to go 48hrs between feeds, but I kind of wish I'd had someway of knowing that it would be our last feed together. 😭

Luckygreenduck · 16/09/2023 09:34

Still breastfeeding, I keep thinking he is finishing and then he gets unwell and goes boob crazy!
I bet it is a strange bitter sweet finishing although I am ready.
Did he stop himself or did you do anything to encourage it?

aNewYorkerInLondon · 16/09/2023 15:00

@YfenniChristie , sending hugs. ❤️

I will be very sad when the breastfeeding stops. I thought we might be headed that way, then he started to cut a molar and he only wants booby and fruit. No other food.

Bubbasmama2017 · 16/09/2023 19:30

Just stopped around a week ago too. It was a random early morning feed trying to get her back to sleep, didn't take a photo or cherish it as didn't realise it was our last. I feel sad but was ready to stop so I haven't pushed to continue and neither has she.

YfenniChristie · 18/09/2023 10:14

Thanks guys. It was all of his own accord - whenever he wanted a feed he would drag the breastfeeding pillow over to me 😂 And he just stopped doing it.

Oddly enough, he asked this morning for feed and got a bit upset when I said no. But once we were downstairs and had his usual cup of milk and snack he was fine.

Luckygreenduck · 27/09/2023 13:34

I think our breastfeeding journey might be at an end. It doesn't seem to settle him anymore and he is downing bottles. I think this is what I have wanted for awhile but still felt emotional not been able to settle him easily anymore.
I am trying to decide whether to just go cold turkey as I think it is stressing him out trying to get milk and finding there is not enough.

So many challenges I never thought about! Life with a toddler is amazing but so intense. Finding it a joy and a surprise.

Bubbasmama2017 · 28/09/2023 09:21

Aww hope you're ok @Luckygreenduck it messes with your emotions for a while.
I found we were down to one short feed and stopped cold turkey and she's not really asked for it. I did have a bit of a lump in my boob for a couple of days but it went away fine and still got a tiny bit of milk if I hand express after 3ish weeks. Good luck!

JMill13 · 27/10/2023 19:23

hi all,

thought I’d come by and check in on everyone if you’re still around?

how is everyone and the babies?

GinnyBee · 27/10/2023 21:24

It’s been a pretty rough autumn for us! As soon as term time only kids went back to nursery we got ill. Baby had HFM and cut bottom molars at the same time, and I think I had HFM too and I’ve now had a sore throat requiring painkillers for almost two weeks. Before this we both had pink eye 🫣

Other than the endless nursery bugs things are good though! He’s such a happy little chap, mostly always in a jolly mood, has a great sense of humour and fun! He’s started talking in two word sentences now, and hardly ever shuts up and just spends the day babbling to himself and practicing his words and narrating everything he’s doing, it’s absolutely adorable! With the increase in communication he’s also much easier and has far fewer tantrums, and I rarely have to fight him anymore to get him changed or dressed etc. A good little soldier!

aNewYorkerInLondon · 27/10/2023 22:51

Hi @JMill13! How are you and yours?

@GinnyBee, I do look forward to that level of communicativeness. We are definitely up to our ears in tantrums, but he’s the sweetest little boy otherwise. Loves to be helpful. Always smiling and trying to engage. Loves hiding then popping out and saying “boo!” Constantly pointing to things and saying “that” — expecting me or his daddy to name the object for him. We’re just getting over a pretty rough week of illness. I hope we get a break before the next one!
