I'm 43 my husband is 50. He has anti sperm antibodies. We tried ivf and icsi a few years ago but no luck. We adopted two kids and we are a happy family of four. The kids are in their teens.

Haven't had a period since november presumed menopause. Just to tile it out ive done a pregnancy test. You can guess the rest.

How many of these are
False positives with the menopause etc

What!!

Ive heard of this happening to people before. Rare, but it happens! Have you spoken to your DH?

wishuponastar1988 · 15/03/2022 07:39

Wow congrats! It depends on your area policy as to whether you self refer to the maternity services or via the GP. I had to go through the GP. I would book a private scan today to get rough dates. My last period was 1st Nov and I am 20 weeks this week so you could be as far as long as me! X

Steamedhams · 15/03/2022 07:50

What an incredible story! I am assuming congratulations here.

I wouldn't worry too much about the alcohol. As you may know from your adoption training, typically a pregnant woman would have to consume a large amount of alcohol over an extended period of time for FASD to develop although there is no known safe limit hence the guidance.

Not sure on tramadol but I know codeine is sometimes given to pregnant women and I think that also passes through the placenta.

Easy for me to say but try not to stress. You are already an amazing mum.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 15/03/2022 14:29

Wow! What an amazing surprise
Don't worry about the things you can't change.
I hope you're able to get a scan very soon.
The number for the midwife should be on GP website or look at community midwife on the hospitals website

Oh my gosh wow!!! What an amazing story please keep us updated I would love to know how far along you are ❤

MarmiteCoriander · 15/03/2022 17:03

Let us know how the scan goes and how far along you are. Back in my grandmas day, this used to be called 'a change of life baby'. She was 19 when her mother got pregnant in her early 40's. Her and her 18yr old sister were so embarrassed that her parents were 'still doing it' at their age! Grin

I would look into having an NIPT- depending how far along you already are. They can be done from 10 weeks. They are offered if your 12 weeks scan/blood are high risk, but not in all areas, and often not for many weeks. I paid privately and was very glad to know at 11 weeks the outcome.

HammerToFall · 15/03/2022 20:51

An update:

Well things are not quite as they seemed. I managed to get a scan in EPAU today (perks of working on labour and delivery)

There is a viable pregnancy but gestation of 6 weeks 4 days.

There is a gestational sac with a yolk but no embryo seen yet.

I'm back there in 3 weeks to see if there is an embryo and the pregnancy is still viable.

So good knows what was going on with my period december and January!

I'm not really sure what this means, should there be an embryo, the doctor scanning said to not see an embryo at the stage wasn't unexpected.

So it's a waiting game now. Im presuming if it was an empty sac and no embryo appeared that hcg levels would fall, also that there would have had to have been an embryo for the sac to form?? Argh ik even more confused than ever!!

@HammerToFall- Thank you for the update. I'm glad you were able to get a scan and have some idea of dates. To answer your questions, a sac can form without an embryo. Sadly this is called a blighted ovum, and not that uncommon. It is still very early though, so no reason to think that its just too early to see anything. At this stage, the foetus would only be 4mm, so this is still incredibly tiny.

Best of luck and do let us know how you get on Flowers

Steamedhams · 16/03/2022 06:35

Thanks for the update.

This must be such an emotional roller coaster for you. I don't have any advice but will be holding you in my thoughts.

Please do let us know how it goes and good luck again OP.

Rebeccalin · 20/03/2022 21:02

Thinking of you for a few weeks time

HammerToFall · 27/03/2022 13:16

Another update.

We went for a private scan. Fetal pole 7mm heart beat present and strong. It's still early days but looks like this is a viable pregnancy.

I'm not sure what extra difficulties come from being 43 and first time pregnancy. We are decided that as long as everything is ok we are going ahead.

Wow darling, congrats!

I am sure you will have extra scans due to maternal age and obviously due to difficulty to get pregnant in the first place.

So now when you know that the bean is there - how you cope ?

sjxoxo · 27/03/2022 13:43

Oh congratulations op 💖 this is a lovely thread and i wish you & your family all the best! Xx

Furmummy · 27/03/2022 13:46

This is such lovely new xxx I am unsure on risks, I am not far behind at 39, but luckily everything has gone smoothly so far xx I was in your position thinking I couldn’t have children, and found that I took it in stages till the 20 week scan and then managed to relax a bit more. X

Fraaahnces · 27/03/2022 13:49

Well, congratulations! My friend found out that she obviously wasn’t quite as menopausal as she had previously thought on her 50th bday. She was already seven months along!

RenegadeMrs · 27/03/2022 13:57

Congratulations wonderful news.

My mum was 46 when she had my brother. She was told she was going through the change so didn't monitor her irregular cycles. She was 3.5 months when she found out and paced up and down for 40 minutes talking to her self saying "how could this of happened". I actually went and got the test as a joke with all her friends there laughing saying could you image. We honestly didn't think she would be pregnant, but my brother is now 12 and enjoying his first year in high school. My mum said it was far better for her being a mum at that age and enjoyed it far more. It was just a different experience altogether than jn her 20's with me and my sisters. She was never at home with him, if she wasnt on a cheap butlins weekend away she was some where else lol. I wish you all the best with your pregnancy x
