Jack is not a boring name! My cat is called Jack. It's a very interesting name for a very interesting cat!

Word of advice to the OP. Keep it simple and spellable.

I do love the name Caelan but it does make things harder for DS1. He spends his life correcting people's pronunciation, people often say it like a girls name and then get a surprise when he's a boy. We also have a very unusual surname.

He'll love it later in life and we wouldn't change it, but I did make sure that the two younger children had easier names.

Having said that, my DD is Carys and people frequently get that wrong too.

No pleasing everybody.

Personally I hate it and all other made up names that will be impossible to spell/pronounce later in life and make the child feel awkward/uncomfortable so the parents can be "different" but it's up to you and surely if your MIL made it up you can spell/pronounce however you damn well like?
I don't really see what your thread is about. If you don't want opinions and it's a made up name (so you decide the spelling) what are you asking?

My DS is Callan which we originally chose from the gaelic and changed the spelling slightly to honour my beloved late Grandma (was her maiden name) We didn't tell anyone the name before he was born as we loved it and didn't want to be put off by anyone saying they hated it. FWIW we've had no negative comments about the name (but feel free to add yours if you don't like it! )
I personally don't like names beginning with K but that really is just a personal opinion and I would never let it affect how I felt about someone or hurt someone's feelings by commenting on it if they'd given the name to their child or had chosen it for their unborn child.
However, personal attacks and unreasonableness aside, the OP asked for an opinion on spelling and that transcended into a discussion about the name which I really think is quite acceptable on a public forum.
As you were.

I just googled the name as you spelt it and it came up with a cooling system or the following:

"Kailon was a character of one of the players in my roleplaying game. He was a dwarven cleric who discovered a magical axe called Trollbane."

I actually think it sounds quite Lord of the Rings and if you like it - then why not. All names were made up from somewhere, whether it be now or 400 years ago. Kai on its own is quite nice too though.

Okay, don't know if I should be admitting this, and I am preparing to duck as the rotten tomatoes come my way, but the name is fairly similar to a Gaelic boys? name which can be spelt different ways depending on whether you go with the Irish Gaelic or Scottish Gaelic. The reason that I know this is because my youngest is called Keilan. ducks and runs for cover
