RDK how mature. I don't have any of those names but I could have done and you would have offended me for no reason if I had as I haven't slated you at all.

Playground tit for tat isn't clever, the names you mentioned are traditional and "nice" names, what is boring about that?

JodieG1 · 05/01/2008 19:02

Oh and how do you know the people slating your choice of name have children with those names? Just off the top of your head? Not very good is it?

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/01/2008 19:03

no need for that rdk

Just thought, how on earth can Jack be a boring name, Jack Bauer is the most unboring person on the planet and very sexy and saves the day every time

rdk · 05/01/2008 19:07

as i said ealier i would like a different name rather than what everyone else has got, but rather than some people/ not all they could have just stuck to what i asked in the begining rather than slagging it off and none of this would have happened, its put me and dp off the name now so well done to all that said it sounds like bum cream .if someone says something to piss you off then im sure you would give as good as you get.

OP posts:
rdk · 05/01/2008 19:11

Spell it how you like, if it is a made up name there isn't a correct of spelling it is there?

I prefer Caleb, it has the same ring to it but sounds more real if you know what I mean.

rdk · 05/01/2008 19:15

id just like to know why a hundreds of times over ive seen post on here about names and hardly any have had negitive or horrible post from people but mine has, the name i said isnt that unusal as theres names very very similar

rdk - I liked your last message on boring names. They are lots of people out there who would like to have given their child an unusual name but don't but because they're too concerned what other people think.

I'm not sure how to spell the name you're looking for but I hope you find the spelling for it. (It looked a bit like a Hawaiian name to me).

Don't bother what other people think of your choice of names. Go for what feels right for you.

kiskidee · 05/01/2008 19:16

to op: kailon surely must rhyme with Dylon. sorry. don't like it.

dejags · 05/01/2008 19:17

My son is Caelan (meaning child).

Pronounced like Kevin but with an L in the middle.

A gaelic name.

rdk · 05/01/2008 19:17

a lady has said earlier she knows someone with this name so after all what my mother in law thought was a made up name is not but ive never heard of it.

OP posts:
3andnomore · 05/01/2008 19:41

rdk, it still is possible that the name is made up...only that someone else also thought of it!
Also, there is a way to have an unusual name, wihtout making it up. Look at other cultures and their names....
my sons are Sven, Yannic and Flynn, and the first 2 are commonly used in Germany, even though they are swedish and french in origin, as for Flynn, think it's irish, but I only ever heard it in Home and Away and loved the name
How about Kai-Len or somehting liek that?

PatsyCline · 05/01/2008 20:10

I honestly think that the best advice on names is to decide what you like and then keep it top secret. You can always check out spellings before you register the birth.

My niece (10) is called Ruby. The first thing my dad said when told her name after her birth was, "I had an Aunt Ruby. Everyone hated her." If my brother had asked my dad his opinion before the birth I am sure that would have put him off using it...

Good luck with the name hunt. It drove me mad!

QuintessentialShadow · 05/01/2008 20:20

Well, if you want it spelt "properly", but not kailon, then I think you either have to go with the Gaelic Caelan (which is lovely), or Kai-Lenn which would be a Norwegian composite name.

I hope it wasnt my post about the keylon empire of star trek that pissed you so off. My sons name is Kai, so I think I can jester a little without slagging the name of.

Think patsy had a good point about keeping it secret until after birth.

Lol, when dh first heard what we called ds2 (Yannic) his first comment was...what's that then, a bloody eskimo name....rofl!

Our 3. son was originally going to be called Frederic, but when we told Friends a lot of either urghs came up, or people were saying things like...oh Freddy, how cute....that really put me off....not so much the urghs, but the name being shortened to a version I really dislike. However, I am glad that I found out beforehand, because I would have hated it if we had called him Frederic and people would have called him Freddy or Fred....

kiskidee · 05/01/2008 21:08

i hope my imput didn't offend. many people when choosing names think: what is the playground dynamics of this name?

the other thing I that quickly came to me was to transpose the O and the I which is clay but is an anti-diarrhoea and natural agricultural fertiliser among other things.

Magdelanian · 05/01/2008 21:14

I kept my choice secret until after the birth and didnt have one negative comment. (Her flippin mates shorten it and I hadnt thought of that). Other names that I'd sounded out had mixed reactions so it sure puts you off when people dont like it. OP you did get jumped on but I've heard the name before. Its up to you how you want to spell it. Kai is usually the shortened version of Kyle.

StaceyBranning · 05/01/2008 21:20

rdk - people are not boring because they chose names that are more common than others. You have no idea why a name is chosen, there are many reasons, some very personal. If you didn't want peoples opinions then you shouldn't post on a public forum. I know you only aksed anout the spelling but posting on a forum is inviting anyone to make a comment on your post good or bad. You might not like the answers you get and if so, just ignore them. You are fuelling the debate by answering them and getting pissed off.

NKF · 05/01/2008 21:23

How can a made up name have a correct spellng?

For what it's worth, many people seeing Kailon will either say Kaylon or Kyelon. They won't be sure which of the first two vowels to pronounce.

Flllightattendant · 06/01/2008 07:21

Oh don't let it put you off the name, RDK...put you off Mumsnet, well that would be utterly reasonable

Heifer · 06/01/2008 07:47

sorry the op feels hurt etc but surely it is better to find out what kind of response a name is likely to get before you actually name a child..

After all, if it has really put you off the name, better now than when it is too late....

And those of you who are shocked that people make assumptions on the child just by their name - are you really? are you new to Mumsnet!

And yes for the record I make judgements about all sorts of things....

Mumblesmummy · 06/01/2008 13:37

I like Kai (I'm biased) and I think what you're trying to spell would probably be Kylan or Khylan. I really like Cailan though. (as in like Kay-lan). I think it's the Scottish/Irish version of Colin (or so someone told me a while ago).

Kai means Ocean in Hawaiian which is really nice.

Also, MUMMYLITTLE I think Marcy's the nicest spelling. But that's just me. I like Macy too.
