Does everyone get tested for gestational diabetes? I haven’t had it mentioned to me but cautious I’ve been eating a lot of sweet stuff (I just love cake! 😩😅)

NamelessBaby1 · 04/04/2022 22:31

I think it's only if you have a family history/ higher weight or age etc that you get tested. My midwife mentioned I'd have to do the test at my first appointment with her, so I'm sure you'd know already if you were going to need one or not!

SPea · 04/04/2022 22:32

My hospital does it for everyone at the 28 week Midwife appt, but I've read on other threads that not all places do and it can depend on your medical history/risk factor. Probably best to check with your Midwife what their policy is.

CaptainCarp · 05/04/2022 06:51

@Coco9910 ours is if you have a high BMI or if you have a parent or sibling with diabetes / mum who had gestational diabetes.

I was booked in because I am fat! Been trying not to have to many sugary things but been craving chocolate / biscuits at times.

I'm another one in for the diabetes test next week 😭 absolutely dreading it. Cba sitting in the hospital for 3 hours. I actually eat less chocolate now than I did pre-pregnancy so I don't know what the outcome will be. Has everyone else been told they have to fast from the night before the test? I'm worried about how hungry I'll get

feliznavidad2 · 05/04/2022 07:11

Also in the club for a diabetes club next week...

feliznavidad2 · 05/04/2022 07:11

Diabetes test^

NamelessBaby1 · 05/04/2022 07:16

@missv556 yes, I've to fast from midnight, and every day I'm waking up starving haha so that will be fun. Thankfully my first appointment is at 8.30, and I'm allowed to go home in between the 2 (I'm having my test at my GP practice which is 2 mins from my house), so that's not too bad. Will need to warn my partner to keep out of the way of a no doubt hangry beast that morning though Grin

Coco9910 · 05/04/2022 09:03

Oh okay nothing has been mentioned so far! I have my 25 week midwife appointment next week so will see if she mentions it. Doesn’t sound fun..feel for you all having it! The fasting sounds hard enough! I have to have 2 breakfasts now a days! 😂

SamanthaVimes · 05/04/2022 11:08

I had mine because there was sugar in my wee sample (not surprising as I’d eaten a load of chocolate that day which I did tell them) my test was fine though. I was reasonably confident it would be as I’d had the same issue in my last pregnancy.
I took a Mars bar to scoff in the car afterwards as I was heading straight out so didn’t have time for a proper breakfast after the test 😅

missv556 · 05/04/2022 15:27

I've been told not to eat from 9pm. I normally eat breakfast around 10am but sometimes as late as midday so hoping I don't end up too starving. My appointment is also first thing at 8.50am

strawberrysummer19 · 05/04/2022 15:32

Just to add to the diabetes chat, I had some bloods done as I joined a new surgery and they wanted to do a full blood count

He called today and says my cholesterol is sky high at 7.9
Then went on to say with the ratio of good and bad it's 2.9 which is ok

But then said I need to diet and watch my food!
Said to stay away from fried food and when I eat chicken remove the skin

I eat fairly healthy I normally weigh 8st 13 at 5ft 6 and I've put on 1st 6lbs so don't thinks it's too much? I know cholesterol doenst work like that but being told to diet at 6m pregnant doenst feel nice!!

Hi everyone, I had my Glucose Tolerance Test today at 8am. I had to stay for 2hrs in the reception. Midwife booked it in because I'm in an at-risk group due to ethnicity. I fasted from midnight last night (and literally had a chocolate eclair at 11:50pm because we were run off our feet and ate super late)! I've done nothing but eat chocolate and sweet stuff lately. Stress/comfort-eating mainly due to non-pregnancy related woes.

Porridgeislife · 05/04/2022 15:39

@strawberrysummer19 your cholesterol has to raise during pregnancy for your baby. He might be applying non-pregnant levels to you.

Heart UK even the recommend not testing for cholesterol during pregnancy as the results are meaningless.

strawberrysummer19 · 05/04/2022 15:58

@Porridgeislife oh wow thank you for this
I've been worrying all afternoon!! Makes sense

He was talking about me being pregnant in the same conversation 🙄xx

CaptainCarp · 05/04/2022 18:46

I had to fast from 10pm for appointment at 8:30am... Interesting to see how others are told 8hrs or some longer!
I found it surprisingly easy to not eat breakfast considering i normally eat about 7:15 on a weekday.

It took them a couple of days to process my results. I've got my fingers crossed for all of you who are going to have 1 that you don't have it.

Surprisingly the day before I had a midwife appointment & no trace of sugar/glucose in my morning wee sample.

I'll see what is said at my scan / clinic.

I'm also due to go for my Glucose Test next week. Absolutely dreading it - just mainly because I'm an absolute wimp when it comes to bloods being taken & quite often feel faint afterwards - so the thought of fasting & having 2 blood tests done is giving me major anxiety 😩😂

CaptainCarp · 06/04/2022 12:13

@Lianna93 the draw for the glucose test wasn't to long at all so hopefully you won't feel too faint!
They did my 28 week bloods at the same time so my 1st set took a little bit longer. So I'd suggest getting these done separately if you are due them.

I had my glucose test this morning, I found that the glucose drink they give you is not that bad. If I have GD they will notify me tomorrow, if they don't call me then good news! I hope they don't call me as tomorrow is my birthday and will like to be able to enjoy a nice dinner and cake!!

Lianna93 · 06/04/2022 13:28

@CaptainCarp My 28 week appointment is literally the day after my glucose test - so it's either have them done there & then or delay by only a day 🙈😂
I'll be able to brave it but have been given the day off work & have either DH or a friend to take me to avoid me driving.

Spottybutterfly · 06/04/2022 16:20
@KizboBaggins yes it's the 4 in 1 vaccine we get : www.medicines.org.uk/emc/PIL.28676.latest.pdf , which includes tetanus, polio and diphtheria too :)
I'm due in August was just having a nosey on this thread. Is this the same one we get as a infant? The same one we got as a child my mam said I had a big reaction to and my arm swelled up and went red.

I thought it was just whooping cough we get of the midwife until I saw this post.

ShellUK09 · 06/04/2022 17:21

Hi everyone, hope everyone is doing okay today. I had my 25 week appointment today and there was no mention of a glucose blood test for diabetes. Although at the very end she did say I will get a blood test at the 28 week appointment, is this to check iron levels or is that to check for diabetes as well? Heard heartbeat again today and she told me to video it for my partner which was nice. She measured bump even though she wasn't supposed to as part of this check, but she said I was measuring 25cm which is apparently fine 🙂

I told her I was feeling a bit clueless as this is my first baby, she mentioned I find out about the online parenting classes at the next appointment. So looks like everything is still online, but any information will be well received. She did tell me not to buy the baby gro sleeping bags for a newborn as they can slip down the bag and it is dangerous, which was a good tip as I had just been looking at them yesterday!

CaptainCarp · 06/04/2022 18:38

@Lianna93 they technically did mine early as they did the glucose test at 26 weeks. My DP drove me to & picked me up from my appointment. It was nice knowing I didn't have to drive.

@ShellUK09 I think they tell you at the booking in appointment if you need a glucose test. Mine did & then confirmed at the 16 week appointment.
The 28 week bloods are to test iron & antibodies.

KizboBaggins · 06/04/2022 18:40

@ShellUK09 ahh that's interesting! I asked my midwife about classes as I'm also a first time mum and feeling completely lost already - I was told there weren't really any and to "google it".... I wonder if it depends where you are based.

Also interesting tip about the gro bags, I was literally about to buy some just before I decide to check on here! I've got my midwife appt tomorrow so I'll ask the midwife about them too.

Lovely that you got to hear heartbeat - I'm hoping to hear my little one's tomorrow as I haven't done yet 🤞🏼

Has anyone bought a bouncer chair yet? There's so many... I'm going to get one second hand but I have no idea whether to get one with a toy bar or not, or an electric one or a rocker one... very confusing!

KizboBaggins · 06/04/2022 18:42

@Spottybutterfly yes I think it is the same thing as you get as an infant. On my GP record I have "DTP" as an infant which has the same vaccines in! I would definitely check with your midwife before having it if you've had a reaction before Smile
